There's a 3 year cycle of dominance

in which a football team can win championships (NCAA or Superbowl). No team has ever won 3 Superbowls in a row. As far as I know, no college team has won 3 football championships in a row in the modern era. Georgia currently may be in their 3 year window/cycle of dominance (or they may be 1 year past it). Hopefully, last season was the 3rd year of their 3 year window and they won't threepeat. Our 3 year cycle was 2016-2018. Alabama and Nebraska have had several 3 year cycles in the modern era. Other teams have also had 3 year cycles in which they won 1 championship in their 3 year window. Usually, the team gets to the championship in the 1st year of the window but doesn't win it. They usually win it in the 2nd or 3rd year and then somebody else's cycle of dominance takes over. Who is taking over the next window/cycle? I don't know. Michigan? All I know it it's not us this season - and maybe not next season. Maybe the season following next season will be the start of our next 3 year window to win the championship. USuck's "cycling out" comment is correct when applied to national championships but wrong when applied to Clemson vs. USuck. We will continue to dominate USuck. We will not dominate the playoffs every year. We will just have to maximize our opportunities when we again position ourselves to have another 3 year window/cycle.

So are you saying we are about to return to dominance since it's been 4 years since our last appearance?

I hope that we can have recurring cycles of dominance like Alabama has had and not fall off the map like Nebraska. I think we can.

Didnt FSU have a 14-yr stretch ranked no lower than 5th?***

Yes... but only 2 national titles in that time (93 and 99).
So even with being very very good, they still had only a few times where they really 'peaked' and could pull it all together.

Had there been a playoff then they probably would have had more

Obviously.

Yes, and they won 2 championships in that stretch: 1993 and 1999. FSU won another one in 2013. Several teams can maintain a top 5 or top 10 ranking over a long time span, but few can convert cycles of dominance into repeat championships or multiple championships in a short time span. SoCal did it in 2003-2004, Florida did it in 2006-2008, and Alabama's been doing it since 2009. FSU dominated the rankings. They didn't dominate the national championships.

Over the years, teams like Oklahoma, Nebraska, Alabama, Miami, FSU and others have dominated for more than three years. USC too. Even Clemson made it to six straight playoffs.

Todd said we were cycling out. He was just a couple years late on his prediction.

I agree with you that several teams have years of dominating rankings for more than 3 year time spans. The point of the original post is that there is a short time span (not necessary, literally 3 years - it can be 2 or 4 but probably not 5 or more) in which a team can win a national championship or Superbowl. And, because the team is great in that 3 year window, they have the opportunity to win 2 years out of 3. I hoping Georgia doesn't prove that you can do it 3 times in a row.

There was an article in 2000 that talked about this in reference to Dabo. Great in depth article on change, recruiting, motivation, staff continuity etc. I wish I could find it.

It wasn't about cycles. It was more geared towards comparing Dabo and Saban. Was talking about how coaches can get to the mountain top but few Bowden being one, Saban the other had mastered how to stay at the top. Went into detail on how willing Dabo would be to adapt to changes. How he would alter his philosophy etc. Especially in recruiting and retaining recruiting.

Neat stuff. I think imho, the cycles will change with the playoffs.
