If so, we should fire Grisham after signing day tomorrow. Bring back Jeff Scott.

If a receiver is slower than the DB covering him it is hard to get separation. That changes with recruiting.

with two (2) direction changes and Hunter is as quick as there is . . . and separation has been gained.
There’s “fast” and there’s “quick” . . . both can be used to creat separation . . . there’s also “physical” - but that is boarder line illegal.

Probably splitting hairs on terminology here, but it’s more about if the WR is quicker than the defender rather than slower/faster. EX: Renfrow has some speed, but his lightning quick cuts are what get him paid millions.
On the other hand, someone with top speed can still get separation as long as they can “sell” some misdirection in their route. A post route should be X yards at full speed then a razor sharp cut to the inside track. If you watch film on Ngata, his post routes were just lazy curls. Easy to maintain lock step as a DB with that even at full speed.

"Quickness" especially in and out of cuts can be improved with good technique - which can be taught.

A lot of it is scheme and route running. Most of our passes were vertical routes under Streeter so that’s not too hard to defend.

Being taught something and executing something are two different things.
I saw Grisham get plenty of separation as a receiver at Clemson, and Jeff hold many extra point attempts.

Double moves and crossing patterns will create separation. Must be able to form a pocket and hold for 2.5 - 3 seconds and have a QB that will hang and step in the pocket and not bail continually.

Combination of speed and technique. If you don't have speed you better have great technique. And one more important thing is you better have a QB that can get you the ball when you break free.

Very tough if you are slower or as Skeeta pointed out not as quick than the DB covering you. Great route running and well designed plays can help in this area.

A lot of it starts with your release technique, then stem and breakpoint. There are lots of good videos out there that illustrate proper WR coaching, but few better than Jeff Scott's 2014 WR drills video: https://youtu.be/PTYzOF5liJw

Yes. The entire point of running any route is to get open. Its certainly easier if you're ohysiscallyt superior to whoever is guarding you, but there have been plenty of great WRs whose route running prowess superseded any physical deficiencies. Having someone who can teach young WRs some of these skills is basically the most important role of a WR coach. If that isn't happening across the board then a change is needed, either among the coaches or among the players we are recruiting.

Exactly what I was saying above. If it was only speed . . then why play?
