This is for expert suds sippers (or chuggers).

In my retirement years, I would like to learn to appreciate various types of beer. I would like your opinions on the best Pilsners, IPAs and Dunkels.
No Budweiser products, please.
TIA

one of the best beers (to me) is Konig Pilsner in a large can (4 packs available at places around the upstate).
I chill it in the fridge and then poor into a room temperature glass. It tastes great cold or as it warms up to room temperature if you are just sipping while watching a game or TV. It is also refreshing in palate for aftertaste.

If you are in sparkle city, go to rj rockers, maybe when it isn't busy, they usually have several ipa's and ales on tap, ask them for recs, sample a few. IPA's are like cars, different people like different styles.

If you can find Narragansett…crush it like Quint It’s a really good American Lager.
My go Imports … Weihenstephaner ( they have been brewing since 1040) Warsteiner - a German Pilsner Paulaner Bitburger Not a fan of any type of wheat/Weiss brews
Where available Grolsch in the Pint flip top is really good. And Guinness draft is really good.

Real men drink real beer.
Check with your frat brothers to see what they like.
I’m enjoying a good ole, made in America, Coors right now.
My tar heel friends prefer those “other” so called beers,

American beers stand toe to toe with any German beer with the exception of our penchant to bastardize beers with too much hops or putting fruit it. Then is becomes either like coffee with too much sugar (akin to too much hops) or being simultaneously feremented with wine (alcohol made from fruit). So great beer in my opinion does not use too much spice nor should it be mixed with wine.

I tend to agree with that. Younger days I couldn’t hold my liquor and only drank beer. Now it’s mainly bourbon for me. Nowhere near as filling and making me feel like I swallowed a beach ball. Plus no hangovers for some weird reason. Go figure

I would start by trying as many varieties as you can, which is plenty these days. I’m a hop head so I love the IPA’s made here in America. In fact, the US makes the best beers in the world by far in my opinion. So find a craft sour, imperial stout, dunkelweizen (if you can!), Octoberfest, pumpkin ale, lager to start. Try a milkshake IPA brewed with lactose for a little sweetness. The variety available is mind blowing.
Amazing how far we’ve come from the old joke: Why is American beer like sex in a canoe? A: because it’s f’ing close to water.

As far as pilsners go, my go to is Pilsner Urquell
2

which is pretty readily available around here, and is the standard for Czech pilsners. Sierra Nevada Summerfest is good too and can be bought at the grocery store. I really like Czechvar/Budvar, the original "Budweiser", but not associated with Anheuser-Busch in any way. ... but those are harder to find. For German pilsners, Ayinger and Weihenstephaner are truly outstanding.
I don't care for IPAs, and I don't drink enough Dunkels to have much of an opinion. I do like stouts, and when the weather turns cool I'll have a few Guinness and Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stouts. Even though Oktoberfest is officially about over, I always love Octoberfest offerings this time of year. Hacker-Schorr was really good this time.
Cheers!

I do like Bud Light Next. It’s a seltzer that identifies as a beer, has zero carbs and very low calories. It also is the best representation of the brand in its current state as it’s confused as to what it is.

IPA's - Resin by Six Point, Bell's Two Hearted - both
Oct 3, 2023, 9:34 AM
|
|
should be very easy to find at a decent sized beer emporium.
Something different:
Delirium Red - it is a Belgian Fruit beer - cherry - I love it - harder to find but worth the search.
Stone Brewing has a lot of solid beers, as does Victory Brewing.
Go to a bigger beer place that lets you mix & match your own six pack & grab six different ones that you thought you'd never like / try - and give it a whirl.
Let us know how it goes ! Slante !

Wow. You really wanted to open a can of worms. There are as many types of beer as there are people woth opinions. I would suggest looking into the types of beer, from pilsner to stout. There are sub levels of each type of.beer, it really depends on the brewer. Best suggestion is try some of.the mass produced and get an idea of what a type is like, and then go for your local concoctions.
Stella artois Most sam adams is good Guiness Dunkel duvel is awesome Dohfish head does some really on point brews Ayinger does an incredible marzen, which is an octoberfest style beer, so its seasonal Trappist
Best way to learn beer, though, is to learn to brew it yourself. Mmmmmmmmmm.
More beer please

Best Dunkel/porter/stout: Black As Satan Best Larger: True Position Best IPA: Frankly all IPA's are crap beer that use hops to cover up the flavor of everything else like ketchup does to a hotdog. Best High Gravity: Truth Serum (14%) or Maximum Material Modifier (13.5%) Best Pilsner:Pilsner Urquel
All but the Pilsner are made by Bob's Laundry Room and you have to actually know Bob to get any of it.

My last on this. The mark of a properly brewed beer is that it tastes just as good at room temperature as it does cold. Ice cold beer is the oldest trick in the beer book. Cold beer deadens your taste buds so that it coveres up for the bad taste of crappy/cheap ingredients.
