can remember, for example, being in a packed crowd in 1973 or so watching the Beatles' Yellow Submarine movie. That sure dates me.

Only thing left standing is the chimney. I have lots of fuzzy Bengal Ball memories from that place.

How many young ladies were talked into interludes at dances at the Barn? Remember a great concert there by Doug Clark and the Hot Nuts.

The police need to check on the whereabouts of Harvey Updyke. He’s the Bama fan that desroyed the Auburn trees. I’m willing to bet he made a trip to Clemson.

There are a lot of hogs up in Hog Heaven looking down at that sight and recalling that building was once their home. When the hogs were moved to their new home it took several years to get the smell out of that building.

Great memories for me at the Y Barn...
Feb 1, 2019, 3:48 PM
|
|
Growing up in Clemson, The Y Barn was a big part of my childhood. As a young child, my Dad would take me to the "Hog Barns" to learn the difference between a Hampshire, Berkshire and Duroc pig. As a 6 to 11 year old, I spent every summer at YMCA Day Camp which used the barn as an activity building. Loved every minute of camp as Clemson students were the counselors and made it fun. Mr. Bill Wooten was the respected leader of all YMCA activities in the barn and the fields and he did a wonderful job managing all of it.
As a Clemson student, the barn was a cool spot to get out of the sun at the terrific Bengal Balls held on the Y Beach.
As an adult, I coached my kids Y League basketball teams in the Y Barn Gym. Even had a chance to coach against Rick Barnes as he coached his daughter's team against my daughter's team. Though not an imposing building, it was probably even more important in my life than the other now gone Clemson landmark, The Clemson House.
Grateful that our local firefighters safely put out the devastating fire. Their service is appreciated.

I definitely remember Bill. He gently lectured me and the teenaged head coach of one of the youth soccer teams about how we couldn't really make a smart aleck 10 year old run laps until he puked. I blame everything wrong with America as stemming from that moment.

power equipment on site inside the incident zone? Arson Detection 101(in NC) says you examine all possible ignition sources BEFORE moving any debris.

But I never set foot inside. But to the conspiracy theory idea, I know everyone gets different adds while reading stories and comments I was surprised when I saw not 1 but 3 Hartwell condo adds reading up on the fire. 2 between comments on this one thread. I'm not a wacko thought those adds should be kinda blocked from this topic is all.
