Hope all is well for him to retire mid-season. Appreciated his stint here and it was nice to be in the NCAA tournament multiple times. I do miss those days. God bless ya Mr Ellis and hope retirement is long and prosperous.

He made the tournament three times in ten years at Clemson and twice in seventeen years at Coastal.

Brownell has done it 2 and 1/2 times. The 1/2 being Purnell's team that was tournament team the previous years. The difference with Ellis when he came to Clemson, we had horrible teams prior. I believe 14-14 and 11-20. The cupboard was bare. We were in postseason tournaments 8 out of 10 years he was here. This was back when the ACC was the premiere conference.

Ellis-coached team won the ACC regular season in 1989. That is a singular event in Clemson Basketball history.

The Elite 8 appearance occurred during the 1979-80 season in a field of 48 teams. Coach Ellis's first year wasn't until 1984-85. 3 NCAA tournaments and 5 NIT's when the ACC was the premiere conference in college basketball is impressive. What could've been in that Sweet 16 game against UCONN has always stuck with me.

the roster due to graduation and such.
Another DEEP mis-representation of the truth. Not quite as egregious as his outright lie about the Virginia game many years ago.
And he isn't a Clemson Basketball fan at heart - he is a Brownlee fan, first & foremost.

Even Foster's Elite 8 team scraped by at #4 in ACC. It was his one-and-only trip to the NCAA tournament, and the team had a short burst of winning combined with some favorable draws, including getting one of the Cinderallas (Lamar) in the Sweet 16. The following two years were mediocre and ended with NIT first-round losses.

Lmao, always discrediting brownell. 2.5 times smh.
Did you know during that 1/2 trip to the tournament, we beat a 12 seed which is something we failed to do under purnell?
2010 - lost in first round to 10 seed 2009 - lost to 10 seed michigan 2008 - lost to 12 seed villanova

How is that unfair? Purnell left for a reason and was and had built that first team Brownell had. The cupboard wasn’t bare like when Ellis started

The cupboard wasnt bare for 1 year and brownell actually won an ncaa tournwy game. Years 2 and 3 the leftovers were not quality ACC starters other than devin booker.

Ours Tigers have had some great guys coaching the basketball teams. Recruiting the top players every year has never been possible for some reason and you can’t compete within the ACC without them.
Ellis and Foster were both great guys. I had the pleasure of meeting both of them during their stay at Clemson and there was nothing to dislike about either. Now Tate’s Locke was another story! But, that Skip Wise could play the game!!!
I attended a Clemson meeting once and Foster was there to give a short speech about the team. He always had a joke to tell his audience. I’ll never forget one he told ...... A world traveler was captured by a tribe of Indians who put the guys in a big pot and was boiling water to cook them before they ate them. One of the guys asked another why he was so happy about being eaten by the cannibals and his reply was .... I’ll get the last laugh, I just crapped in their stew!
It would mean a LOT to this ancient Tiger if the team could have a championship year for once! Let’s show the team that we are all in ..this once!

I remember he walked through Schilletter one day at lunch. Sat down at our table for a short chat. Told us he'd love to see us at the game that night. Seems like we lost that night to the Duke team with Johnnie Dawkins.
But don't get me started on friggin Tate George and UConn's Hail Mary prayer ... bastids.

Congratulations coach Ellis. You did a lot with very little. That 1990 ACC Championship was a fun ride. I had a coworker who graduated from Duke and I won lots of dollars. Pretty amazing that we won it that year. Deep tournament run ended by George Tate and UConn if my memory serves me well.
