Track credentials of the guy that ran down Ship on 1st play

Sep 26, 2022, 9:38 PM

#3 Malik Mustapha who happened to be Shipley's high school teammate. Even with the angle I can't see how this guy was able to run him down based on Shipley's track reputation.

Just from memory it looked to me like Ship just ran out of gas.

That’s what I thought also. It looked like he wasn’t quite in stride.

I went back and rewatched it and he had plenty of time to hit his stride. He never got touched which I initially thought he got bumped.

Kept waiting for that ETN afterburner to kick in and it never did. I know he's often compared to Mccaffery but I haven't seen the comparison yet. Two different offenses I suppose.

ETN, and I think baby bro will be too are generational players. Maybe the best back to ever play at Clemson... Or at least that I'll see.

I believe Shipley was still getting up to speed and the tackler was already at full speed.

His 400 time is so bad that it can't have been an event he took seriously. My guess is that he was one of the many HS football players that "ran track" as a way to stay in shape in the off-season. Even mediocre high schoolers should run sub 55 seconds.

He was definitely faster than his 400 or 100 times on Saturday. He looked like a 10.5 100 guy.

You do realize even ETN was run down many times. I will take 53 yard run on the 1st play on O any game.

Sep 26, 2022, 10:07 PM

…speed.

Sure, the ball is light, but that lack of a symmetrical stride with your arms has to slow you down, even if by only 10%.

Most of the guys at this level have elite speed in both of those positions.

While I wanted Ship to pull away, my thought was that I have only seen ONE player in Clemson football history that I have NEVER seen caught from behind (and he said so himself), and that was Sammy Watkins.

I had relinquished the fact that Ship was going to be caught, but relishing the fact that he rolled off a 50 yard run.

Jacoby Ford and CJ rarely got chased down from behind.

If may memory is right Spud, I recall one of the coaches saying at that time Jacoby was faster on the track, but CJ was faster with a football in his hands.

Personally, I only remember Spiller being chased down when he was out of gas from putting in work from prior plays.

When he was fresh, I never seen someone chase him down -- except Jacoby Ford on that kickoff return against Maryland where Spiller lost a shoe taking it to the house.

I only remember one time that CJ (when healthy) was caught from behind. We were playing NC St in the Valley. I think that the DB was actually from Sumter. However, no one was quicker.

but they did have the angle on him.

The only other time he got caught when he was healthy was when he was a rookie and a guy who ran a legit 10 flat 100m meters from the Jets caught him because he celebrated prematurely.

Shipley is really fast. So is this guy, and he caught Ship

Sep 26, 2022, 10:40 PM

from behind - this time. Was it a little surprising to see Shipley run down from behind, given his reputation as a legit track guy with break-away speed? Sure, a little. But, Ship had already run 20 yards when this guy started running after him; plus Ship was carrying a football and trying to find the correct line to avoid other would-be tacklers; and he just got caught from behind by another really fast guy. Here's the take away for me - Shipley is still really fast, and will still break a lot of long runs using his speed. No worries.

but he got those last 2 inches when it mattered most at the end.

Shipley had two guys pursuing one on either side. He saw

Sep 27, 2022, 10:23 AM

... he saw the guy coming on his left and he instinctively cut back to his right.

He cut over into the path of the guy who had the angle.

If just one guy had been in pursuit, he probably would have scored in that play.

Shipley would have needed to be much faster than those guys to have avoided them both.

Watch the play again and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

You coots are making way too much of that one play. Shipley is a good back. He’s probably not as fast as our Shipley brothers were, but he runs hard and is pretty tough.
I am friends with coach Bob Shipley who is the father of our Shipley boys if this was his long lost son, the missing Shipley. He laughed after I asked if we were recruiting him back then and he said Shipley was a Clemson lock. You guys don’t seem very appreciative of either him, or Dabo. Wanna trade?
