when I was young . . . nowadays, it is simply called, “THE OPEN”.
We’ll have no TIGERS in the Field . . . nevertheless, several of us will follow the spectacle being held in HOYLAKE, WIRRAL • ENG at the Royal Liverpool Course.
Two of my favorite YouTube Golf Presenters, Rick Shiels and Iona Steven have shared their views. If interested and have the time, they are posted below.
Rick: https://youtu.be/-bIQVosxY7w
Iona: https://youtu.be/GfxKXQhA5MM
Enjoy TIGERS!!!

Actually it’s “The Open Championship” when the Brit broadcasters say it, it helps to get the accent right if you hold out your pinkie while saying.

Ought to be interesting. I have played the course several times. The last time I played it the wind was blowing at least 20 mph and after I walked off the 4th green on my way to the 5th tee, I heard a loud "clank" behind me, and my friend playing the Par 3 4th had hit the bottom of the flagstick and the ball dropped directly into the cup for a hole-in-one.

It’s the oldest golf tournament in the world by far … 1865

It predates The US Open by 30 years and The Masters by some 70 years.
But I agree … the modern descriptive term The BRITISH Open is necessary today to avoid confusion

The Open Championship all over the world.
It's just like we prefer the Masters to be known as the Masters - not as the US Masters as they say in some countries. I know it's probably just splitting hairs.

And I still call the college in Columbus who has Michigan as a rival Ohio State. And I still call the building on the edge of Bowman Field Tillman Hall. Maybe I’m a “throwback”, but more likely I’m just a stubborn anole.

“The British Open” is an American term...

that was used by the US television networks covering the event. Although the tournament is now largely referred to as The Open, the official name is "The Open Championship". Over time, because of the US's influence on professional golf, the name "The British Open" spread outside the US. In short, while the name "British Open" isn't wrong, it's just not officially right.

For everyone asking why it is not called the "British Open" anymore, I think the main reason is because "British" when used to describe this tournament is actually incorrect. The island of Great Britain only consists of England, Wales and Scotland, which leaves out Northern Ireland which is also part of the UK. So if a tournament for the Open was played in Northern Ireland, it would not be a "British Open".
It makes more sense to refer to it as "The Open" which captures all golf on the British Isles. When you say "British Open", you are only referring to one island.

Royal Portrush is in Northern Ireland, so when played there and referred to as the "British Open", it would be incorrect.

I always called it the British Open too, until about 5 years ago when someone corrected me.
