Welcome to BamaNet. I am just as unhappy about last night's

debacle as anybody could be. But, I am even more sad about the posts I see all over the boreds. We have become the Alabama fanbase. OMG we lost ONE GAME, FIRE EVERYBODY, blow up the team and PORTAL IN 85 NEW GUYS!

It was only a few short years ago that we on here were just shaking our heads at the Bama fanbase for howling for Saban's head because we had just beaten them 44-16. That happened to be the only game they lost all year.

I have a sad news flash for you guys. Clemson is not going to win the Natty every year. We are not going to win it even half the time. Neither is anybody else. Nick Saban has come closer than anyone in history, but he is 6-10 in his 16 seasons at Bama when it comes to winning Nattys.

And, Saban has not won either of the last TWO Nattys. Why, he has gotten just totally surpassed by Kirby Smart and Georgia. Why, Bama should FIRE that "What have you done for me lately" slug IMMEDIATELY, if not sooner!

The Clemson fanbase needs to take a collective breath, and step back from the ledge. We sound just as stupid as that Bama lunatic fringe that talks about firing Nick Saban right now. If anything, we sound even more entitled than them.

Let's face some facts. Clemson is in the ACC. That alone puts Dabo at a competitive disadvantage for some high profile kids when it comes to recruiting. The advent of NIL, with Clemson's comparatively small Alumni base compared to MOST of the other major players in college football, furthers that disadvantage. Those are facts, not conjecture. And yet, Dabo and his staff continue to pull in their share of highly talented players.

So, what has changed? What is different? It may seem trivial to some, but I think one difference is, the end of the voluntary team ban on posting on social media during the season. Say what you will, but the start of our "decline" coincided with the end of that. The other major difference was easy to see on the field again last night. Clemson, once again, was not able to muster enough of a pass rush to disrupt the Duke offense. We haven't really done so since the end of the 2018 season.

We obviously have some great recruiters among our D-Line coaches. And, we still had Brent Venables here for 2019-21. But, the rush just hasn't been the same. If there is one single factor that I believe has contributed to our recent relative lack of success, I firmly believe that is it.

On paper, there shouldn't be anybody out there in a transfer portal that is better than who we have along the D-Line. But, the results just are not there. So, is it coaches or players, I do not know. But, the problem is real. And until it gets fixed, we are not going back to being CLEMSON.

Let's say I accept all of your premises.

Then why are we paying Dabo like a guy who should be in contention for more natty's than not and not losing games like last night?

The problem isn't what we're getting....the problem is the delta between what we are paying for and what we are getting.

College football head coaching is just like major league

Sep 5, 2023, 10:12 AM

baseball players. You get paid big $$$ for PAST success. And, just like MLB, lets face it, how many of those huge free agents that sign those ten year, gazillion dollar contracts continue to perform at that level? Not many, if any.

I don't have a problem with what we pay Dabo. But, like the rest of us, I am certainly not happy with the product on the field right now. Unlike some of us, I do not believe that portalling in a bunch of guys is the fix for it. Mostly because I think our problem, regardless of popular opinion, is not with the skill position players. Our problem, to varying degrees since the start of the 2019 season, is offensive line play, and lack of a pass rush.

I don't keep notes on the portal, but I don't think there has been a huge turnover of offensive linemen via the portal that have made an impact at new schools. A portal guru may prove me wrong on that. There HAVE been several D-Linemen who have portalled and had huge impacts.

But, as I said in another post, ON PAPER, our talent at D-Line is as good as anybody in the country. But, the play on the field certainly is not backing that up. Now, Coach Venables had more of a "take no prisoners" type approach, and was blitzing somebody on nearly every play, it seemed. Wes hasn't done much of that so far. Maybe he should start. Or, maybe our D-Line needs to start playing like the highly rated players they are supposed to be. If that happens, suddenly Dabo will start looking smart again.

Ok, so when a coach is paid against a

Baseline metric of a high level of success, why is it unreasonable (or Bama-net) to feel and express disappointment when that metric is more and more frequently missed?

Dabo asks a lot of Clemson and gets it. I can’t think of anything we tell him “no” on. Paid like a top coach in the country? Done. Incredible facilities that are amongst the best in the country? Done. The ability to make major gambles and hire whoever he wants on staff, and then pay them amongst the highest staff salaries in the country? Done

To whom much is given, much is expected, and that doesn’t make us “Bama”.

Exactly. Those expectations are very reasonable.***

I don’t think you have to worry about Alabama hiring Dabo after Saban leaves.

The thing is that it wasn't just one game. It is the beginning of year 3 of more of the same. And it was Duke for goodness sakes, not FSU. And we had spring, summer and fall to get better and get ready for one game. And we brought in the best OC in the country to fix the offense. And DJ is gone, etc.

I'm sorry, but there is much more here than just one game...

world, or even the season. Duke will go on to have a pretty good year this year, I believe. And, so can Clemson. We just have to recover that sense of "want to silence the doubters" that seems to have left us.

You can't ban social media at this point. That's how a lot of the players make their NIL money.

Clemson has lost 3 of the last 4 games played. When has Bama lost to Vandy? Duke=Vandy. Nice try, but your message isn’t going to resonate after last night. You go cheer and fist pump in the corner by yourself. People like me have said god awful hires, stubborn arrogance about the transfer portal, and bad roster management was going to rear its ugly head. You saw that last night.

Was hoping to wait a few days before the sunshine pumping started back. I guess not.

When was the last time Vandy was 9-4?***

I writing IPTAY checks to help build a football dynasty, not watch the HC's "friends and family" hires diminish the Clemson brand on a national stage. If that make me like 'bama then fine. I will gladly own that.

Clemson brand on the national stage to begin with? When he took over the program, we were the constant butt of jokes on ESPN, and hadn't been relative on that stage since Danny Ford was fired. Oh, how quickly we forget.

I think the national media has been waiting for this day to come and for Dabo to get his comeuppance. This is going to build until we have another big win. Beating FSU in about 3 weeks would go a long way to silencing the drum beats. Another loss is only going to make them louder.

No one has forgotten. I lived it too. I've already clapped backed at several posting posting here about C****ing. But if you think #### near $75 million dollars over a decade can't change a person -even a really good person- and make them complacent and stubborn then you are likely more supportive of that person than the university he works for.

When we became an elite program that I was afraid that we would become entitled like an Alabama, Ohio St, etc expecting to win a NATTY every year!!!

They're like spoiled brats that was never told no as a child....

Sep 5, 2023, 12:47 PM [ in reply to I said this in 2015... ]

Especially since it’s been 5 years since we’ve won one.

I think most serious Clemson fans expect us to not lose to Duke by 3 touchdowns.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

its not entitlement to expect

Sep 5, 2023, 12:48 PM [ in reply to I said this in 2015... ]

a coach who makes 10 mil and still recruits at a high level to put a competitive product on the field. if this was the bowden or west days sure you would be right. but we had gone elite so yeah the fans expectations are on a different level
