What about a change in our defensive scheme?

We should move to a 3-5-3 or is it a 3-3-5 defensive scheme next year. NC State TCU and many others run this now. Our scheme has become stale and folks have figured us out. With 3 down linemen spread out it is harder to hold them than bunching 4 side by side close together. Also with active linebackers that can play the run and pass it seems it is better for the modern day pass happy offenses.

We have got to defend the pass better. Hardly ever are we able to double up on a receiver. These receivers are getting to good with great passing QBs to cover 1 on 1

In 3 set schemes the 2 positions flanking the nose are usually DE in name only and really 4-3 DTs; if that holds true>possible excess of 4-3 DE

we recruit to our base defense, 4-3. Kind of late in the game to change that, especially when DL recruiting is through the roof.

And secondary was our weak spot last season, granted, injuries playing a big part. But we want more of them on the field, and fewer of the guys where we've recruited elite guys?

I'll take a new DC for $500, Alex. Not that Goodwin is totally bad, but it seems the defense lacked a good amount of intensity and underperformed. Defensive units traditionally take on the mentality of their DC. Venables knowledge and passion set the tone and established an identity that Clemson's defense is known for. Goodwin just doesn't have that presence.
