I was reading another thread about the "Obituary for a Quiet Life" and it "got me to thinkin" about my Grandparents. Simple folks like many of yours, I'm sure. My Grandad farmed just outside of Bishopville and worked in a cotton mill in Camden. He died in 1999 from emphysema. Most likely from inhaling cotton fiber his entire life. My Grandma stayed home and raised three boys and two girls.
To the subject; my Grandma used to use the word "directly" all the time. As in, "we'll be going to town directly". Now, this term "directly" could mean we'd be leaving in 5 minutes or 5 hours...or tomorrow.
If I was acting up, she'd say "I'm going to get your grandaddy directly". That was more of a threat than a time reference and I knew exactly what it meant.

In my adult life I have used it multiple times, yet have only heard it from others on very few occasions.

That phrase and many listed in this post comes from the KJ Bible.
Psalms 139 "14 I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.
The Psalmist was proclaiming that God is worthy of praise because He made man which is the most complicated entity in this physical world.
That chapter is one of my favorites for it gives me as much comfort as any chapter in the Bible. It reminds me of how important we are to God and how intricately He knows us. It tells me that God knows us before we are formed, where we are going, what we are going to do there, what we are going to say and even what we are going to think.
Most importantly it tells me that there is no place for me to elude God's Holy Spirit even if that was my desire. It's the fence around me that ensures my safety and keeps me in bounds.
Psa 139 makes Shakespeare look like a screen writer for a ### rated film.

Swell. Not since it was uttered by Christopher Reeve in the 1978 Superman Movie and an astute Margot Kidder commented that she hadn't heard that word used in a very long time, even in 1978.

Here are a few from my 74 year old past:
- "just mash the buttons" (referring to operating a new "touch tone telephone" in the 1960s)
- she "must ain't" be happy (referring to the neighbor's wife who up and left him)
- "pull that light out" (referring to the single light bulb in the ceiling with a pull cord)
- "He needs his mouth washed out"......actually happened to me for calling my older sister a
LIAR! and my mother used Lifebouy soap. I remember the taste of it even today.
Born and raised in Sumter......enrolled at Clemson (after high school) even though I had NEVER even been to Clemson or seen the school before I actually entered in August 1967. My family despised the Gamecocks.
