What It Will Take to Beat FSU

Sep 14, 2014, 11:18 AM

Yes, we can beat FSU. Yes we have the talent on our team to pull the upset. Just like BC, Virginia, ECU, etc. did yesterday, we can do it but not without some major changes and yes some of those involve coaching. As a relatively new Tiger loyalist it seems to me that in virtually all key games we play tight. Try not to lose. Don't take risks. That can work when we have a total talent advantage over an opponent but not when we do not so what do we need to do to win
1. We need to come out supercharged, in their face, let them know that this is going to be a battle.
2. Defensively cannot sit back and wait. We need to do what the teams listed above did to pull their upsets--
blitz anytime, anyhow so that quickly they see a totally different Tiger team. We need to coax them into mistakes. Hurry the Crab Man. Pound him down and into the ground just like we did against Miller of OSU.
3. Forget this conservative play calling. Start off with pass plays over the middle, use the center of the field more instead of constantly letting their DBs use the sidelines as a defensive player. Screen passes, even a pass from a player like Watson or Choice (both QB's) to a wide out deep, reverses, passes over the middle to our TEs. In short, things we don't normally do. We need to upset the apple cart and take chances. We just might catch them off guard.
4. Regarding the QB. Start Cole but if he doesn't move the ball immediately put Watson is. I've read all about how he's too inexperienced, might get hurt, his time will come etc.etc. Throw all of that out the window. Anyone with a working pair of eyes can see that he is a threat in our offense and we need to use him just like BC did last nite with their QB against Southern Cal. If Cole is getting the job done stay with him until we enter a lull and then enter Watson.
5. Get Scott in the game as early as possible somehow. We need a huge game from him and I believe he is capable of delivering it.
6. Tell our TE's we need a top performance from them in catching the ball and BLOCKING. And then will them to perform.
GAME after game I have seen us get trounced because of
many things not the least of which is our PREDICTABILITY! Change that and the game against the Criminoles is the time to start. WE need to go onto the field with a huge chip on our shoulder and the coaching staff has plenty of ammo to pour gasoline on that fire!!
If we do these things and catch a break or 2, yes we can win this game. Absent this type of change, I honestly see no way we win.
We've got plenty of talent on our 2014 Tiger Team and it's high time our coaches pulled it out and let the darn horses run!!!

Yes! and may I please add that the coaches need to challenge these young athletes on many fronts and then give them the change of direction to make it happen. Tell them---we expect to win this game! You all came to our beloved Clemson to be able to play in games like this against top competition! I'm leaving the room now with the rest of the coaches. You guys figure out how to get mentally ready to go out and lay a whipping on these Criminoles who already have a National Championship and isn't that what WE WANT and WE WANT IT NOW!!! Not NEXT YEAR NOW!

You failed to mention the NUMBER ONE thing ....offensive line play! All that other stuff is just .... stuff!

Re: What It Will Take to Beat FSU

Sep 14, 2014, 11:36 AM

You might note that most of the plays I mentioned do not require gapeing holes to run through. If the Tigers get fired up enough the OL will respond. With all due respect, I'd probably tell the OL how I know that they'll perform well today. Now go out and PROVE IT!
Did you see the other upsets yesterday? Do you think that all of their OL's were better than ours? It's motivation and those teams had it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No... getting "fired up enough" won't do it.

Sep 14, 2014, 1:18 PM

Preparation in practice, learning assignments and executing them in the game is what will do it.

Confidence is built on skill and preparation. Otherwise it is just unfounded emotion which is quickly dashed when reality sets in.

I couldn't have said it better. Helps coming, but as we know, it will be a few years before our line is there. So how do we win this Saturday? Create turnovers, better field position, and strectg the field.

What it will take....

Sep 14, 2014, 11:32 AM

The simplistic version:

1. PUNCH THEM in the mouth every single down, every single play, every single minute.

2. Play EVERY single quarter with an "underdog" chip on their shoulder

3. Remember the 2006 squad that had "no shot "....and got it done!

4. Remember that Famous Anus Winston smugly called Death Valley "their house"....and get payback!!

5. OPEN UP the play book and go for it !!! Conservative has NO PLACE in this game!!

6. Ignore that. #1 ranking and just PLAY like it's the National Championship!!

7. UNLEASH that Defensive line on every play and put Winston on his A$$ as much as possible!!

8. Seize the moment and OWN Doak Campbell stadium from the opening whistle!!

GO TIGERS!!!!

Grrrrr....I love your post and enthusiasm! No matter OL, DL, Stoudt, Watson, Dabo or Chad. ...just freaking go,out and win. We can either sit around and analyze this all week and always believe we just don't have a chance or go into this week as if we own this game. For me, It will be a lot more fun and helpful to just BELIEVE!

USC might have slept on BC - FSU WILL NOT sleep on us

Sep 14, 2014, 11:34 AM

FSU knows we can beat them If they aren't careful

a lot of FSU players and CLemson players know each other, played against each other growing up etc --- there is at loeast some overlap there

I think USC slept on BC -- not sure if anyone in the country picked that as an upset.

FSU will give us their BEST GAME --- this game goes a LONG way towards winning the ACC

if we want to win -- we have to play a BEST GAME, get a couple breaks, and the coaches have to OPEN UP the play book and play downfield. we can't throw to the flats 15 times to win this game.

i agree, but without nasty O line play, it's null and void

Sep 14, 2014, 11:36 AM

you cannot do anything on a football field effectively without good O line play. Somehow, some way we have GOT to recruit, teach, and coach our O linemen to be nasty SOB's no matter what type of offense we run. It's hard to have that in the spread O's that rarely run the ball. However, in the type of fast paced O that we run, we try to run the football often so you actually can have mauler types on the O line if you develop that mentality in the O line and make it a requirement of the culture of that position group. We haven't really had that since the late 80's and it has hurt us ever since in certain games on the schedule. You want good kids, good citizens, good people in and around your team but you have to have some nasty ######## on the O line if you want to win and impose your will on folks no matter how explosive your skill guys are.

I could not agree more with your assessment and we must get there. Unfortunately, we can't develop what you say by next Saturday but we sure as hell can try to motivate them to play out of their arrses

stop playing not to lose. This has been the boil on the donkey's butt for way to long here at Clemson.

Re: What It Will Take to Beat FSU

Sep 14, 2014, 11:44 AM

College football has turned into matchups good and bad. A&M and ECU were both bad matchups for USC given our youth in the secondary. UGA was a much better matchup for the Gamecocks. CU matches up well with FSU. I give the tigers a better than a fighters punch to pull it off. Okie St made FSU look ordinary. Wouldn't be surprised to see CU win this week in tally.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We can't throw these young players to the wolves...

Sep 14, 2014, 12:55 PM

We need the players with the best game experience out there. Watson and Scott aren't ready for the big-time, not yet. Stoudt, Humphries and Seckinger are the more prudent choices.

Trust our coaches. They know what they are doing.
