What's it gonna take to fix Clemson basketball?
Mar 12, 2022, 4:36 PM
|
|
I'm talking about getting it to a point where it's better than it's ever been, to where we are not mired in perpetual mid-pack (or worse) mediocrity, and to where we can actually win the ACC outright once every 10 years or so, and finish in the top 25 most years. What would it take? What would our BOT need to do? Be specific and give as much detail as needed.
What does Clemson need to do to improve it's basketball program? [Results]
|
|
Give the current coach a raise, to bring him up closer to the same level as the more successful coaches in the conference. |
|
Pour more money into the program for facilities, recruiting, assistants, PR, and other goodies needed to run and promote Clemson basketball. |
|
Both 1 and 2. |
|
Get a new coach that can breathe new life into the program. |
|
Both 2 and 4 are needed if we are to compete at a higher level. |
|
Clemson basketball will never, ever rise above mediocrity, no matter what. |
|
Clemson basketball needs nothing. It's fantastic just like it is! |

About $20M now for capital and $5M per year going forward. This is for a top end coach and improvements to the facility for the players. Woilukd also need $2M for NIL per year.
That should about for it

On. Second thought $7M for NIL. Forget the facility money and keep CBB. The only thing missing is too end talent which $7M in NIL money should fix. On the other hand Clemson Football is about to look like Wake football without a strong NIL game so maybe we should redirect our NIL funds

Get the right person for number 4 & they will take care of number 2 as well.

Number 2 might do it - who knows. Number 4, a new coach, seems the most attractive IF we can find the right coach who is willing to stay at Clemson for 10-25 years. Good luck with that. But we did find Dabo in football - or maybe we just lucked into him instead of finding him. We will need similar luck in basketball, or we will all again be looking for a new coach in 3-5 years. Criteria for the new coach (if we go that route):
1. Loves Clemson 2. Has a great recruiting record at a school that has poorer facilities etc. than the current Clemson facilities 3. Has a record of taking his teams to the NCAA

Where's 'scrap the program' choice? That way we can utilized the money in other sports. Maybe repurpose LJ into an ice rink and have a Hockey team. Heck. we could recruit some Northeast/Canuck folks selling our wonderful weather.

As a fan who’s attended games in LJ since 1980…

…the program is what it is….mediocre…we will have our moments here and there but it’s not going to change. We are the only program from the original acc to never win the conference tournament or go to the final four. Only one. It’s not going to change under this staff. We will have team that has a good year but nothing sustained.

You start with 4, find a good coach and then go for 2.

I'll play.
It will take the same thing it takes at any university.
1. Hire the right coach. a. recruiter b. Developer of the talent he recruits. c. knows the infrastructure he needs to succeed.
2. An administration who supports him and agrees with his infrastructure needs.
3. The money provided (boosters, private donors, university support, whatever) to build the infrastructure (buildings, people, assistant coaches, etc.) required to succeed.
It takes all 3. Two of them, no matter how good they are, are not enough. A two-legged stool will fail no matter how strong the two legs are.
