When did you first realize we were in decline?

2

Sep 5, 2023, 6:43 AM

For me two moments stand out:

1) I won’t say I knew then but something struck me as odd in New Orleans when Dabo kept telling the media we had a chance to become the first 30-0 team in history. That to me was the most forward looking I’d ever heard Dabo

2) The first half of the opener against UGA in 2021. I knew then we were cooked as far as being elite anymore. I knew it was over from a CFP expectations perspective

Things ebb and flow. We still win 10 total games this year and most schools will be envious of that. I think we all need to get hands on deck with NIL and portal deals though. That is the future we need to maximize this. Gone are the days of clean recruiting players without them expecting a big paycheck.

Please explain how we get to 10 wins. Seriously wondering how you think that’s going to happen after what we witnessed last night.

9-3 is ceiling

Sep 5, 2023, 7:25 AM

Losses to FSU and Notre dame after last night. I think we beat South Carolina and North Carolina if our defense is competent by that point that should be enough to shut rattler down and we would have to play at last B- O to beat both

10 wins? That's ludicrous even by sunshine pumper standards.

I recognize that it seems far fetched, but we have talent. We made a bunch of boneheaded mistakes. Maybe you’re right and we only win 8 or 9. And I agree that there are cracks forming in our foundation. But the season can still be salvaged. 10 wins is now the barometer (including the bowl game)

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This was also the moment for me

Sep 5, 2023, 1:08 PM [ in reply to Re: When did you first realize we were in decline? ]

It was all too apparent to me that the college roster would have to be managed with even e skill than an NFL roster, primarily due to the fact that there are no rules to control the payroll.

And also when Texas A&M bought that first NIL recruiting class, I also felt that was the beginning of the end.

I thought this year might be Clemson’s last run at greatness, but I was a year off.

The Seminoles are going to show absolutely no mercy on Clemson. Their motto is going to be “payback is h311”.

when I said you could see "cracks in the foundation"......been pointing out reasons for our decline for the last 3-4 years.

What sucks is if a FAN like myself (and others on here) can see it, then either DABO CAN'T..........or HE CAN he's just neglecting this program b/c he can't set his pride aside to admit "HIS WAY" doesn't work in this ERA of college football.

Probably now. FSU will name the score against us.

I realized something was off after the 2021 Sugar Bowl. That's when I really took note of Dabo's hiring of under qualified coaches. The scholarships to lesser quality players and refusal to use the portal to address roster issues was obvious as well.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: When did you first realize we were in decline?

It's been obvious since 2020 that TL and ETN were the only ones keeping the team afloat. Replace them with DJ/Klubnik and Shipley and the decline of the rest of the roster suddenly becomes much more evident.

Ohio State, Fields big game

2

Sep 5, 2023, 7:30 AM

that was brutal and unexpected. He played lights out and our program has not recovered. Clemson has a way of not showing up at times which I guess happens to all teams, but I do not care about any other teams.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Ohio State, Fields big game

5

Sep 5, 2023, 7:59 AM

Same. That and Dabo stupidly adding fuel to their fire with ranking them like the 14th best team in the Coaches poll. I thought it was sort of funny at the time. I quickly realized shortly thereafter that Dabo's ego was going to be a BIG problem for the program.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Ohio State, Fields big game

1

Sep 5, 2023, 12:58 PM

Agree with this. Wasn’t just that Ohio St loss but Dabo giving bulletin board material when there really wasn’t any upside to doing it. Confidence is good. Arrogance gets you beat, on the field and in how (don’t) prepare for the game and opponent. Last night was yet another example of that. Whatever Dabo and the coaches thought they did right in fall practice and to get ready for Duke, they failed miserably.

Decline? You could still go 11-1. The overreaction is nuts. Dabo will fix this. Hopefully not on 9/30 but your program isn’t suddenly not elite. Duke is good.

Sep 5, 2023, 1:14 PM [ in reply to Re: When did you first realize we were in decline? ]

That winning the national championship is the goal.

After all, football is the only sport that Clemson has ever played consistently at a decently high level.

The university has put too much money in football to just expect mediocrity.

The Kelly Bryant year. I realized that if we don’t have an elite/generational QB we win 10 games max no matter how good the defense is. Which means no playoffs. Of course TL came in but he and Etienne carried the team along with Higgins. The recruiting has declined offensively. Big misses at WR and here we are post elite QB play looking at 10 wins

The Kelly Bryant year was MUCH better than the two DJ years and the abomination of a game we saw last night. Sorry, but that was not anywhere near where the decline started. I mean, we won a national championship the next year bro-taco.

It actually does. Saban didn't allow it. Kirby didn't allow it. Dabo allowed the team to become political activists. I would have been just as ticked off had they put Trump stickers on helmets. Football is about football, not politics. When Dabo allowed that to happen, it showed that he no longer controlled the team.

I told my son that the day of the BLM rally and march, that nothing would ever be the same again. For better or for worse, but it would never be the same when Clemson Football got involved in social issues. As it turns out, I was correct. Things have been on a steady downhill slide for the football program since that day.

Losing Scott, BV and the guys they took with them changed Dabo's entire personna. He had to go from being CEO to COO and that is not his strength. He relied on those guys heavily for Xs and Os and Dabo brought the vision and the passion. Everyone always commented on how our continuity in the staff was such a difference maker. When that changed, everything changed.

Two years ago. We have not beat an elite team since we last beat Ohio St. Have said it several times. Our run is over. NIL & TP has caused the game to pass us by. We will never have deep pockets like the oil money in Texas, Holly Weard money in Cali and we don't have a large fan base like Ohio St, ND and a few other teams. Just glad I'm at the age where I watched each Natty Clemson has won. Will always blead orange. Go Tigers.

That was arguably the best college football offense ever and one of the best teams, playing them in their backyard.

We jumped out to a 14-3 lead in that game and had chances in the 2nd half to get right back into it.

LSU NATTY. We had two generational QB's. Six years of Top rated QB's and only won two Natties. We should have won two with each at least. We never opened up their full potential because the talent around them left over time. Now we are left with what we recruited to FILL a spot. We have no ALPHA dogs. If you really look at that recruiting class that came in from the Natty win in 2018, a hand full panned out. Breese (when he was able to play), Murphy, Trent, Davis Allen, McFadden. Our linebackers look great because of the guys they had in front of them. We squandered away the ability to really pull in the talent.

LSU exposed the "scheme" in 2019. Cant just go out there and lineup big wrs expecting them to catch contested balls every time you need a big play or expect screens to be positive yards even when your formations have tells.

Derion Kendrick made me realize it

1

Sep 5, 2023, 1:18 PM

In his Senior Bowl interview he was asked about the differences between Georgia and Clemson. He praised Dabo and talked about how Clemson wants to do it right on and off the field, but he also admitted that practices were harder and faster at Georgia. He also said that Kirby was more vocal and intense at practice. It made me realize that we had lost our intensity and hunger to win.

It was 2019 for me.

Seeing Trevor struggle early to start season was when I knew something was wrong.

Seeing XT and KJ struggle was disheartening. Both of them were 5 stars coming out of high school. I think we all believed they were going to be better than Clelin and Austin Bryant given their recruiting rankings. But they weren't.

Getting blasted by Ohio State in 2020 solidified it for me. The regression trend became obvious. Something was clearly going wrong. So many big time recruits weren't nearly as good as we thought they would be.

Not using the transfer portal heading into 2021 seemed stupid to me. We were losing so much talent, especially on offense (Trevor, Etienne, Amari, Cornell, Jackson). And that stupidity reared its ugly head against UGA to start the season with that abysmal offensive performance.

More yards rushing, more yards passing, 12 more first downs, multiple scoring chances wasted. You have to admit the loss was kinda flukey. I have for years heard Clemson fans talk about the team “Clemsoning”. I think Clemson will be just fine. You guys act like one upset is the end of the program. Could the real decline be the quality of the fan base ?

Two moments:
1) Ohio State loss- it seemed BV’s scheme was catching up to him
