Who is in charge?
Aug 29, 2021, 6:06 PM
|
|
Biden was at FEMA today in regard to Ida. Biden,"I'm not supposed to take any questions, but go ahead," the President told a Bloomberg News reporter.
The reporter said,"Mr. President, on Afghanistan---"
Biden cut her off," I'm not gonna answer on Afghanistan now," and walked off.
I can give Biden a pass for not wanting to answer a question about Afghanistan at a meeting held about Ida, but for Biden to say he is not supposed to take questions, begs the question of who is telling the President whether he should take questions or not?
Biden obviously has some very controlling handlers who direct him when he can take questions and who to call on. He furthermore doesn't have enough presence of mind to even hide the fact that he is being manipulated by others.
The next question I would like Biden to answer is who is telling you, the leader of the free world, when to take questions and from whom?
I doubt there are many here on P&R who would continue the services of a doctor, lawyer, accountant, architect, or engineer who performed similarly to Biden.
Unfortunately, we are stuck with a person with arguably the most important job in this country and the world, who is not in charge.
What's going on is indefensible.

It's probably just Ron Klain telling him not to field questions and go off-the-cuff

Next time he says he’s been told not to do something I really wish a reporter would ask “Mr President who is telling you that?” He’s obviously not in charge. Someone or group not elected by the people seem to be calling the shots. Scary and pathetic.

he struggles even when we know he gets all the questions ahead of time, has the answers told to him and written down and he still can't manage. He will not answer a question that he has not been given the answer to. They will put him to bed without milk if he doesn't do exactly as he is told.

Seems wise of his staff, if I was in charge of managing an octogenarian I'd do the same thing.

Yeah, there were plenty who had your point of view, and leaving the fascist debate aside, as it's secondary to the point, I think a lot of Biden voters thought he was a harmless, competent-enough career politician who would provide 4 years of calm stasis.

thought this could happen but at the time, all I remember hearing is that the worst case scenario is that he had lost a step and wouldn’t be sharp, but would have a team of adults that would keep everything together.
I really think some Biden voters would have voted Trump if they could have seen into the future and see this happening. Not all or most, obviously. There were some that could have shown the planet literally on fire and said “I’ll take that over Trump.”

The fact that this is the level of issue we're having with the president, that it's about him having handlers, is very refreshing after the level of issues we had with the lunatic we accidentally elected last time.

I'm going to say the same thing about Biden that I said...

About Trump.
When we have a president who is refusing to take questions, is confrontational with the media, and walks off the set because he doesn't like the questions, we have a problem. He's not doing that to the media. He's doing that to the American people.
This job demands he communicates with us, and if he doesn't like the question being asked, too ####### bad.
Now, whether or not that's because someone else is pulling the strings, I don't know. Either way, as you said, it's indefensible.
A president MUST stand before the press and answer the questions that the American people want to know. We more than deserve that.

Trump had a lot of interactions with the media...they were just so antagonistic by him as to be useless and were meant to be red meat for the base instead of informative.
I've said it before, but these pre-selected media interactions that Biden has going on are a dangerous precedent. Trump ignoring Jim Acosta or selecting OAN because he knew he'd get a softball was one thing, but these new interactions are worryingly incestuous. Donna Brazile got canned for getting CNN debate questions to Hillary. Is that any less dangerous to us as media consumers and citizens than a President getting canned questions from the press with the ability to formulate focus-group approved answers in advance?
I really can't believe that the big-name media members who still believe in the sacredness of truth in journalism aren't all over this. Equally troubling is the fact that Biden lacks the mental facilities to realize you don't say these things (I've been instructed.....) out loud, but he's putting it on a tee for the journalists who aren't in the handler VIP society, and none of them seem to be taking it.

Hey, if it involves government officials snubbing the press, I'm always gonna holler. They work for us and that's how they communicate with us.
One could argue the antagonism came from the campaign trail when Trump and Co. labeled them as enemies of the people (and only did it to pander to his dumber voters). Either way, he or Biden or whomever refuses to answer questions or refuses to have press briefings for months, that president is failing the American people.
I recall how Obama lied that his administration would be the most transparent with the media in history. We have president after president thinking he doesn't have to answer to the press (meaning answering to the people), and it's a growing problem.

as a media insider, I'd really like your opinion on the ethics of a President getting canned questions with pre-written answers and then only primarily calling on those press members involved. It seems like a problematic blurring of the demarcation line between the press and the govt.

My opinion of the ethics of that? That's not ethical at all, IMO. But sadly, I know that happens a lot.
This is why a good reporter never submits his or her questions before an interview.
EDIT: I'm also pretty old school when it comes to journalism so a lot of my views probably aren't as kosher anymore. I dunno.

"The press is doing everything within their power to fight the magnificence of the phrase, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN! They can’t stand the fact that this Administration has done more than virtually any other Administration in its first 2yrs. They are truly the ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE!"
From a Tweet on April 5, 2019. And that's just one example. He used that term well before then during the campaign.

You can't cherry pick one time he said it...
Aug 30, 2021, 10:40 AM

And then ignore all the other times he called them that without mentioning fake news. Also, his definition of "fake news" was just "factual information he didn't like".
When any president is labeling ANY group of Americans as "enemy of the people," he's got to go.

I said he called the media the "enemy of the people." You said, "Trump said 'fake news' was the enemy of the people," as a reply, implying that he ONLY said it about fake news. I gave you a quote that was one of many where he called them that WITHOUT referencing "fake news".
So yes, there was one time you found where he did that, but he called them that multiple times without any reference to "fake news".
We also know that what he labeled as "fake news" wasn't actually fake news.

I would just like to see the link. I'm not saying he didn't say what you are claiming, but I didn't hear him put it that way.
Now what he thought was fake news is a different story, but I'm sure you would agree that there is misinformation and slanted information disseminated by "news" organizations, and this is not good for the country.

Okay, I thought you were saying your link proved your point.
I can't link to his banned Twitter account, but here's a news account of the quote.
https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/437610-trump-calls-press-the-enemy-of-the-people

Yes, but those aren't the sources he referenced, and the people he referenced are not "enemies of the people."
I will also correct myself; I said he used the term during the campaign, but he actually first used it in February of 2017.

Coke... or maybe Blockbuster that went under... "enemies of the people" for taking less scrupulous methods to make more money? Because that's what most of the press problems boil down to today. The struggle to outshout the other voices to make more money. Fox actually wisely figured out a long time ago that they could sacrifice journalistic integrity for ratings. CNN went full on with that during the Trump years as they found their niche.
It's unethical, of course, but not all media outlets are engaging in the practices. That doesn't justify labeling thousands of Americans across the nation who work in the profession as enemies of our country.
Any leader--throughout all of history--who has labeled any group of people within the country as enemies of the country ALWAYS had evil and sinister intentions.
EDIT: Wouldn't you also say the press has come at Biden pretty hard the last two weeks?

Dems will sacrifice their own in a heartbeat if it helps at the next election.
No doubt, but that's just politics, right? I think they all knew Biden was an ends to a means and then hoped to figure something out afterwards.
Just not sure they really figured it out that well...

He's got a different personality and probably doesn't think it's a big deal to say things like "I was told..." etc.
But, whoever the people are telling him these things need to also tell him to QUIT MAKING REFERENCES TO BEING TOLD WHAT TO DO OR NOT TO DO!!!
And, quit touching/scratching your face when you are on camera. Just deal with it, it will go away.

It won't happen, but Biden should take a test of his cognitive abilities now, administered by a respected medical institution. If he is found to be cognitively impaired, he should step down or be removed.
I say that as a conservative who realizes Harris is intrinsically more liberal than Biden.
The country deserves a President who is fully intact mentally. What a novel idea.
It's sad to see what's happening and it will get worse. The consequences for letting things ride as they are could prove catastrophic for the country and the world.
