“Think” they wanted defense to rest.

I say stupid. No down side to going second. And I’m pulling for SF.

The downside to going second would be the team going first has the first shot at winning the game on their second possession. I still would've gone on defense first.

If the team takes the ball and scores a TD the game is over...

Ignoring safeties and turnovers...

First team - 0 points
Second team - any score wins

First - FG
Second - FG tie, TD win

First - TD
Second - TD/XP tie, TD/2pt win

Any scenario tied after first and second team possess, next score wins.

I think the benefits of going second far outweigh going first. Also, by going second, you know exactly what you have to do and can play the entire possession knowing you have 4 downs if needed. Possesssing first, you do not have that luxury and have to strongly consider punting/kicking on 4th down, which is exactly what happens.

I think in yesterday's scenario, SF had to play for a TD. Anything better than a 4th and 6 or so in KC territory should have been "go for it". Mahomes has won too many games on last drives...you can't give him the ball, 4 downs, unlimited clock, and tell him a TD wins.

The only justification I've heard for the decision by Shanahan was that his defense was tired. I don't buy it...there was plenty of recovery time between the end of regulation and OT kickoff.
