Will the Tigers make it back to the national championship

Jun 24, 2016, 12:16 PM

This year? No.

Quite honestly no. I like the team and Watson is awesome but until the D can limit the big plays they repeatedly gave up last year then no. I said last year it was too many and once again in the championship game.... Too many. Venables is a really solid coordinator but the D needs to be more disciplined for the entire game in order to make it back.

Coot alert!

Yes, of course they can make it back to the NC game. Our front 7 is going to be one of the best in the country and I'm only worried about 1/4th of our secondary, the CB spot opposite Tank. Other than that, where are the weaknesses on this defense?

Also, those big plays are ALWAYS going to be a part of the Clemson defense. That is how it is structured and it will not change. This defense is about going big or going home. They want to get off the field as quickly as possible, hopefully with an early stop, but a quick score is much better than a long scoring drive. This keeps them rested for the 4th quarter. BV is the #1 coordinator in the country at this type of defense and it's not even close. I wish I could find the article that put it into numbers.

The obvious response is "coot alert". Well, this clown is well known for being a coot, so it's no surprise.

Let's consider that Clemson played 10 straight weeks without a weekend off. 10.

Alabama played 5 to end the season. Ohio State 4 straight to end the season. LSU 4 straight to end the season.

Auburn 6 straight. Florida 6 straight. FSU 9 straight. Georgia 5 straight. Georgia Tech 3 straight. UNC 8 straight.

Oklahoma 9 straight. The cluckers 5 straight. Notre Dame 5 straight.

My point???? By the time we played the coots, our boys were tired on defense, we didn't have TONS of depth and it showed in our secondary. We played tired against the coots and UNCheat in our last two games. I'm not blaming this on the big plays our defense gave up in those two games and the Bama game, but it played a factor. I believe we go all the way this year with the most explosive offense in college football and fairly good defense. The key is improved special teams, especially on the KOR defense.

The odds are in your favor to be right. I mean, come on,

anyone would take all 10 or 12 teams with a realistic shot, and bet against one team.

I do think we have a better chance than anyone else not named FSU.

I think that this season is where you see the attrition of losing so much talent to the NFL. It eventually catches up with the best of them. That along with atrocious special teams play doesn't bode well for a return trip to the show.

It might ruffle your feathers

Check the roster. Future NFL talent ready to play.

Jun 24, 2016, 12:30 PM

you said yourself last year's "new" defense made plenty of errors throughout the regular season and despite some glaring miscues in the NC game, nearly beat 'Bama. This year, the Tigers will have a better OL, both Mike Williams and the Waynetrain will be returning to an offense run by arguably the best QB in college football (and probably the leading Heisman candidate)...throw in Leggett and the other WR's and its the opponents defenses that will be in severe danger.....The Tigers may need 35-40 points to win games, but they are certainy capable of doing it.....personally, I cant wait to see how Clemson does on the 'points per possession" stat

Venables deserves every consideration after his "new" defense did so well last season....I think he's got the talent (much of it mildly inexperienced) to rebuild as good a team again this season...

Anyhow, with about the same number of speedbumps in the road (FlaSt, Louisville, & maybe Auburn cuz its the first game) as last season, its little wonder the vast majority of experts pick the Tigers to make the playoffs again

Welcome back! I've missed your pessimistic

Jun 24, 2016, 12:32 PM

Vs. cootishbposts. Of course you are right that chances are low just ask all the motherhood teams. However our offense should be better. And I don't think I'd overlook our defense. Do they need to be better? Yes, but our line should own a lot of these games and hopefully our backfield folks will get slot of on the job training early on. I think there is as good of a chance as ever that we not only get back but win it. But either way it may come down to a few plays that make a difference. I trust our players to bring it every play.

There have been 10 times where a team from the previous National Championship game played in the next one. So it's as likely as it is to not happen.

And so, we made it to the game last year giving up the big plays, but we can't make it back this year giving up big plays? And you said last year it was too many....yet we still made the game.

Clemson

I don't ever remember reading one of your post

Jun 24, 2016, 12:46 PM

That has had ANYTHING positive to say about Clemson, why? I don't go around accusing posters of being "coots" but I might make an exception in your case. We don't have a tough schedule, we've got exceptional talent all over the field, what we lack in defensive experience we more than compensate for with raw talent and who on our schedule can stop our offense? For the love of God, please just go away!

You should be concerned about Coach Bust, Not Coach Venables !***

its definitely hard to do even if you are good enough

Jun 24, 2016, 1:13 PM

that will be a feat of epic proportions if we pull it off. REquires a lot of focus, luck, and good health to get back. No doubt we are good enough to win them all this year but man it ain't gonna be easy.

CAse in point Ohio State had the same team that won the NC last year with guys with more experience. And they couldn't do it. Almost did though. Its hard to do but i'll pulling for them every game in hopes that they do.

I tell you this much. It sure is a lot of fun having these types of debates. Whether or not we are going to go back to the title game or not. Cherish these moments guys.

A. Best qb in the country in Watson
B. best o-line in the country
C. A top 5 back in Gallman with talented depth behind him.
D. Best group of wr in the country.
E. 3 deep with 4 and 5 star talent at defensive tackle.
F. Young but extremely talented group of DE and LB
Yea I think we'll be back and better than last year.
