With the ruling out in California,

Athletes are considered employees and can Unionize. Well, that knocks all this NIL stuff in a cocked hat. That means that anything the school provides for the Athlete is now income and can be taxed. Also, there will be performance reviews of employees and they will be presented in each January with a IRS form listing all things provided with a monetary value. That should be fun to file.
By the way, this is a right to work state, so an employee can be let go without showing cause.

So much for free education.

We don't like capitalism when our players want a slice?

It has been income since 1987

Tuition, fees, books, get subtracted, but room & board, meals, and other benefits are taxable.

There hasn’t been a ruling

Right to work state doesn't mean what you said

Dec 15, 2022, 10:23 PM

Right to work means you can't be made to join a union to work at a particular job. "Free employment" is the term you described.

That's true but you could be dragged into court for...

for anything including explaining what right to work really means.

This would be a nightmare for the schools HR dept.

Good morning, Bigun, I thought the NLRB had filed

suit in California; however, a decision has not been rendered.

Regardless, I posted earlier that if a decision is supportive, then a bottomless can of worms will be opened.

Athletic scholarships have always renewed annually...

Dec 16, 2022, 7:51 AM

and that has been the basis for transfer rule argument (i.e., if schools can effectively revoke a scholarship at any time, why shouldn't the student-athletes be able to transfer at their discretion).

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

A few years ago, schools started guaranteeing 4 years for the grant-in-aid.

If a kid is going to be considered an employee he might as well be able to skip school altogether and try for the NFL. Or at least a practice squad.

Education is a thing of the past with a lot of these guys. Football is a means to an end. Problem being it does not always end the way you want it to.

The straight-to-NFL policy is managed by the NFL, not by the colleges/NCAA.

It would be an NFL/NFLPA decision to change that policy.
