Wow, Clemson basically turned away a 5* DE
Jan 19, 2016, 8:43 PM

A. Clayton was just bumped up to 5*. He had serious interest in Clemson and there was a better than good chance that he would have eventually signed with us. Dodd's pro intentions were not yet known and the staff had determined early that they were only taking 1 DE this year. In no uncertain terms they told X. Kelly and Clayton that they'd take the 1st guy that committed and would shut down their DE recruitment after that. Clayton wanted to spend a little more time seeing what else was out there, but Kelly didn't hesitate and committed. Clayton was dominant at the UA game and in practices and earned the 5th star and eventually choice Florida
Clayton may have a more immediate impact, but Kelly has more physical tools and upside to eventually be the better player. Basically we turned away a 5* due to numbers. It's crazy to me that our program is at a point where a typical 5* is not oversign worthy. Apparently, you've got to be a 5* and top 5-10 overall in the entire class for us to squeeze you in.

How many games have we lost because of Dabo's recruiting of legacies?
Go to STS or FGF if you ain't with Dabo and recruiting, you can spout your whining over there.

What a great way to think! Don't question stuff or think about stuff...if you don't agree with everything our coaches do, get out!

The ridicule of Dabo was the issue. You made it out as if those who question coaching should be thrown off the board. That's not what happened and you know it. A poster ridiculed our HC after Clemson's first 14 win season. That's not bright.

Someone questioned the strategy of giving scholarships to legacies & sons of coaches, and the exact response was "Go to STS or FGF if you ain't with Dabo and recruiting"
I'm not making it out to be anything...I'm just responding to what another poster said. I think it's foolish to shut people down just for bringing up a subject like that, especially when there's a limited number of scholarships. We've given out multiple scholarships to guys who have 0 other Division 1 offers, and whose parents are more than able to afford tuition. It's worth talking about IMO.
FWIW, I don't have a problem with those guys being on the team, but I believe they should be preferred walk-ons.

Sorry how is saying how talk Trapp and Dawkins are trashing them ? This is the correct height right ? Do you know how many 5'7 CBs play in the NFL ? I'll answer for you NONE . Pointing the obvious isn't trashing them it's the truth . You know what they say "It is not slander or defamation if it is true"

Well you pretty much inferred that they didn't deserve a scholly before they haven't even played a game, but I suppose you know better than coaches that have put 2 star recruits into the NFL.

If you think they are so good and deserve the scholarship then surely you would bet that at least 1 out of the 5 will make it into the NFL ? If not then pipe down.

Since when is making it to the NFL a criteria for the meaning a scholarship? Were Spencer Sheuy, Darius Robinson, Rod McDowell, Gary Peters and Josh Watson wasted scholarships? By your theory yes because 1 of the 5 didn't get into the NFL, but keep on passing judgement on players that have not even set foot on a college football field.

I thought they haven't set foot on a college football field ? I think we have 11 on the KO team but maybe we are playing with 9 after seeing all of the returns we gave up this year .

Have Dawkins and Trapp played a down of College Football yet? No...so you are still passing judgement on players that haven't played yet. You are completely foolish if you really think our coaches put the don't put 11 best players on the KO team because of their last name.

The one thing I disagree with is putting walk-on type players on scholarship just because of the last name on the jersey . Other than that no problems with Dabo .

Venables' son isn't an issue whatsoever - future 4* player. It's the Davis twins, Trapp, and Dawkins that are issues, specifically.

I'd recommend you check my posting history - I'm a big Dabo fan and have been tremendously pleased with the program's success and direction. Again, we have a limited number of scholarships and I'd rather not have several used for limited players. If we were like Alabama and "cut" players by putting them on medical hardship for little reason (a strategy I'd prefer we never pursue), then this probably wouldn't be an issue. But when we are lacking depth and short on numbers at key positions while we're losing freshman All-Americans (ie Kareem Orr), it seems to me that we are hurting ourselves.

While we're naming names, add Nick Schuessler (roomate's player) & D.J. Greenlee (S&C staff member's son). Dabo is very free-hearted with other people's money. It does not appear that he will discontinue the practice so it's useless to debate it.

With this logic we should never fire Danny Danny Pearman because he is a former player and that helps show the family atmosphere.

Don't just cry and whine about that. Dabo signed a 5 star that has been suspended twice. Maybe we should fire him. The Davis Twins and Brian Hawkins son haven't cost us a game. Deon on the other might have. Get over bashing the sons of former Tigers.

I posted on this earlier today. I wish we would have gone for 2 DEs too especially with Dodd now gone. I will say Clayton needs to beef up some. We was around 220 range earlier in the year. Kelly is already right at 260

I think long term Kelly is better, but I would have loved to have both. Clayton is like a slightly less athletic V. Beasley and Kelly is like a slightly more athletic S. Lawson. Would have been a nice contrast to give OLs fits. If we get Gary though, it won't bother me as much.

This is a pretty good assessment. Clayton's explosion jumps off the tape - to me, he's an oversign, especially now that we've lost both DEs

I learned many years ago to not get caught up in recruiting ., Don't waste your time and thoughts on ., Its always going to seem like we missed on some players ,., but In Dabo I trust ,., He has put good players on the field at all positions ,.,. Have they missed blocks , catches ,. assignments Yes they have ,.but we won 14 games in a row ,. I was proud of ALL of Them .,
