Xs and Os Gurus

Dabo said Duke was playing to stop the deep ball. I’m guessing 2 high safeties, but couldn’t really tell by the camera angles on the broadcast. Could someone confirm? If that’s the case that explains why we were able to run at will, but ended up without points because of the fumbles.

That is my assumption

and if they were playing 2 high safeties why on earth were we not running quick slants, crossing routes and TE up the seam for intermediate throws between the hashes? There were 3 TOTAL passes between the hashes between the LOS and 15 yards up field.

We did some of that...

but Cade missed the reads and threw to the boundary.

I think it was that defense Tony Elliott used to complain about - the 3-3-5 that a lot of people run now. Keep stuff in front of you and I think I’ve also heard them refer to the umbrella coverage. It has to have weaknesses like anything but honestly their defensive personnel seemed athletically superior to our offensive personnel. I thought we ran some crossers early on successfully but maybe they shut those down later. I guess when you get inside the 10 the umbrella gets tighter and provides more run support.

Give Duke credit...

their defenders had really good closing speed.

Dabo's. Well better stop there. Yes, they played some but our wr and qb weren't reading it, in some cases, had plenty of ol time to still wait for it a n develop beat the 2 high. Honestly, a chit show all the way around. Yes, there was some good but we have enough experience now that it shouldn't be that difficult. I'm not in the room, not at practice so I can't say. Not sure if Cades not comfortable or the wrs are not reading the D or what. Maybe we were just that unprepared.

Every defense is forcing us to make plays on the sidelines. This has been true for the last 3 seasons.

They are taking away deep shots and the middle of the field. Defensive coordinators understand that we don't have electric playmakers at WR. They are forcing our outside WRs to make plays outside of the hashes. But we don't have those guys. Who's the WR that can take a screen 75 yards for a TD? Beaux, Randall, Cole, and Brannon aren't those guys. Antonio and Tyler CAN do it, but we need them to play in the slot instead. This is why I'm hoping Tyler and Tink get more playing time.

Think about guys that we had in the past. Sammy Watkins, Artavis Scott, Amari Rodgers. They were dudes that could make plays outside the hashes. They were quick in and out of their breaks. They could make defenders miss after the catch. They could turn screens into big plays. Again, we only have 2 WRs that can do that now and both are in the slot.

And then when we do take out shots deep and/or across the middle, our WRs aren't creating separation. Our QBs have been inconsistent with their accuracy. Cade almost threw an INT on the first series and it was a route to Briningstool across the middle of the field. We took a deep shot to Cole in the 1st quarter and he created zero separation against a 6'4 CB.

The only solution I can think for this problem is Antonio moving outside with Beaux and starting Tyler Brown in the slot. Then, Tink needs to get more playing time because he can make dudes miss. He can create separation. If teams are going to make our WRs beat them outside the hashes, we need actual WRs that can accomplish that.
