I read last week that filming the movie actually helped Jimmy Stewart work through his WWII PTSD. He said that was his favorite of the 80 movies he made.

Jimmy Stewart was a bomber pilot in the 8th Air Force during WW II and flew bombing missions over Germany. He was lucky to survive because that was the most dangerous assignment of the war. The 8th AF had more of its men killed than the entire Marine Corps.
After the war, he remained in the AF Reserves and became a two star general.
When I was in the AF, he visited our facility in 1968. I remember looking out my office window and seeing him standing a few feet away under a magnolia tree. He was the most elegant looking person in uniform I ever saw. I still have a photo of one of my good AF friends with Gen Stewart.

It's a condensed story of Jimmy Stewart's life form childhood to Hollywood pre and post WWII and his time during the war. It's 26 minutes long, but it is extremely fascinating and worth a watch.
He had learned to fly while in Hollywood making a living being an actor and had already won an Oscar for Philadelphia Story when he enlisted. He barely qualified and the Army wanted to give him an easy assignment, but he insisted on flying combat missions.
His 5 years in the military took a toll on him physically and mentally and in his acting career when he returned. He was about to quit when Frank Capra gave him a chance with It's a Wonderful Life. Some of the scenes showed the actual issues he was dealing with post war. It is truly a great American story.

also a big fan of the "Golden Age of Hollywood" films... man, this video was right in my wheelhouse. I knew a good bit about Stewart's role in WW2, but this guy really dug into the details. Loved it.
What a man. As the saying goes, they don't make em like that any more.

His stepson was KIA in Vietnam. Seem to recall he was a fighter pilot. After Stewart made several bombing missions, the senior officers of the USAAF wanted to ground him. Were concerned morale on the home front would be severly affected if he was KIA as the early bombing missions had heavier cauualties than anticipated. He was able resist and eventually flew 20 missions.

It’s at my top 3 of Christmas movies. Jimmy Stewart, Charlton Heston, Buddy Epsen, Raymond Burr, Eddie Albert, William Powell along with some other great actors and actresses such as Mryna Loy and Carol Lombard made some great movies. And unfortunately Today’s Hollywood is all fluff little to no substance. It’s fitting the Hollywood is located in California. They deserve each other. It’s my opinion that so goes Hollywood, so goes our values, morals and the character of our society.
It’s a Wonderful Life is one of the all time great Christmas movies.
Thank you for the OP.

on corner opp Lucille Balls (Arnez) home.
Amazing is both homes from just few blocks from Rodeo Drive but still didn’t have the high security fences or estate guards as the newer stars had as you went up into the hills.
And, Jimmy walked 2 blocks every Sunday to church, went his hairpiece off..
and his house was on not on the corner lot but second lot in since he used the corner lot as a garden..opp Lucille’s.
