As we approach the renewal of the Clemson - Georgia rivalry,

Aug 19, 2021, 4:41 PM

I am reminded of one of my favorite humorists, the late Lewis Grizzard. Lewis loved whiskey and wimmens and was one of the most talented Southern writers / comedians of my time. He also loved Georgia football, to the point that some of his ashes are scattered at the 50-yard line at Sanford Stadium. He was also vocal about his hatred for Clemson. I'll share two related posts from the Tigernet archives - one about the Bulldog Victory over Clemson in 1984 posted by Sludgemuffin who hasn't posted in 5 years, at least under that user name. The other is one you've probably read, the greatest headline in the history of sports journalism, posted by RogerS® who is on a lot but seldom posts.

Lewis died at age 47 following his 4th marriage and 4th heart valve surgery. RIP, Dawg.

Not only was Lewis Grizzard a great humorist ,he wrote some incredible great articles for The Atlanta Journal & Constitution .The one article that did it for me appeared in his first book entitled "Won't You Come Home Billy Bob Bailey"?
The article appears in Chapter 7, pages 164-166 and is simply entitled "Patti Berry.
Google it and read it. It still leaves a lump in my throat.
And for the record although I go by "leftie" on TigerNet ,Lewis and I share the same first name.

P.S. He autographed that book for me at a show he did in Spartanburg back in the mid 80's.

Thanks for posting. Great memories of Lewis if not that particular game.

Hey TigerHawk76, I just smiled reading the Lewis Grizzard tribute post, again. Thanks for that. My wife is the youngest of 6 UGA graduates, and this year's game coincides closely with our 32d wedding anniversary. The woman deserves a medal, truly. Since Clemson and UGA don't play each other regularly, anymore, I'd say that we've been fairly content watching each other's teams play without any undo tension (especially with Clemson's general trajectory over the most recent years). It takes the most kindest and sympathetic of husbands to feign pain properly. It's an art form, really. However, this game is approaching, and I'm a good actor - but not that good. Is it wrong to ask God for a favorable outcome when you know that other, misguided people, are praying for "their team", too? Y'all think about me after this game, pls. If we win, I won't be able to hide a smirk on my face. I just can't do it. If we lose, God forbid, how do I can I possibly hide my, uh, contempt. If you say "Great game" through gritted teeth, does that make you a good sport or a bad sport? If Clemson wins, and "oh heck yeah" I'm counting on it, it's going to be a funeral vibe in the house for a month. Can I pull off the "mournful" act? This is what this game does to our household. Anyone else have such a dilemma?
