Beamer, however, says heās already shut down a number of quarterbacks who sought assurances from South Carolina.
āJust to be completely and totally honest, a lot of those quarterbacks (in the transfer portal) call and said, āWill you guarantee me the starting quarterback job?ā ā Beamer admitted Wednesday. āAnd I said, āAbsolutely not. I will guarantee you the opportunity to come in here and compete.ā

I think I read somewhere that all of the OL and DL recruits were guaranteed starting roles or "significant" playing time as freshmen. That was why they chose to go there.

...."I'll guarantee you a starting spot or even X amount of playing time."
No player would ever come right out and say, "I'll come to your school only if you will guarantee you a starting spot."
The standard line coaches use is something akin to "All I'll promise you is an opportunity. And, that's all you need, isn't it?"
Players aren't stupid. When Riley Leonard transferred to ND he didn't need to be promised a starting spot. He can look at the depth chart. All he needs to be told is ND isn't gonna take another guy from the portal. He knows he's going into Spring as the clear #1 and will get #1 reps and as long as he performs he'll be #1 on opening day.
Spencer knew he was #1 when he signed with SC. He didn't need to ask Beamer, "Will you promise me the starting spot?"
