There's a couple of decent public tracks around Columbia. Golden Hills is easy to get to off of I-20 and its usually in good shape.

It's a very nice 18 hole semi private course. It's tough too. Or can be. We'd play there a lot. Not sure where you got it wasn't 18 holes.

If you're coming down I-26, try Timberlake off the Chapin Exit. Really a fun course on Lake Murray. Also Newberry CC is very convenient off of I-26. Mid Carolina around Newberry is also a decent course.
But my number one suggestion is Timberlake.

Mid-Carolina is right on I-26, at the Prosperity exit.***

greens at Timberlake are FAST! Only played there once, years ago when a native son of Orangeburg was the Assistant Pro. Outside of the private Musgrove Mill course in Clinton, SC, probably the fastest greens I ever played on. It was fun imagining you were getting just a little taste of what Augusta National must be like on a slow day.

We used to play there ALL the time. Then it went way down and I heard they lost their greens... But not sure since its been over a decade.

Played timberlake a month ago and the greens were really bad! Not sure if you've had a better experience lately.

Musgrove Mill in Clinton, Camden CC, Florence CC.

Chesterfield has a very challenging back nice. Coarse is in pretty decent shape. Still some wind damage from a previous storm. Front is open but the back is a challenge.

Cheraw State park is always nice. Beautiful scenery and pretty long. Not sure how hard it would be to get a tee time.

Wherever you play, have fun and a safe trip to MB.

the price for greens fees is reasonable. But looking at a map seems way out of the way if driving from Clemson to MB

You had great suggestions. I love cheraw. It's just a nice place to hang out... Then again, SC has some wonderful state parks.

Either way, if I were him/her, imo get through Columbia and then stop. Pretty easy drive from from clemson to cootlumbia... But then it drags getting to MB. Guess a lot depends whether you want to take mainly interstate or state highway, as well as whether you're going to north myrtle or down towards pawley.

If you're headed down towards pawleys from cootlumbia, then I'd play around Santee and go up through Georgetown... But that's just me.

I think I would play the Walker Course and then just drive and replay the round over in my head for 4 hours. Love that course.
