While I appreciate the things Tommy did for Clemson...

Oct 29, 2021, 1:20 PM

I was not the least bit sad to see him go.

I remember he would isolate himself away from the rest of the team as he walked the sidelines.

In fairness…he couldn’t get too close to people

with that giant Waffle House menu sticking out of his pants.

Clemson was little more than just pay check to Tommy...

He did very little to endear himself to the Clemson family.

This is a common criticism, but in my opinion very unfair.

I always kind of liked him.

Do you have any specific examples of where he fell short in the “endearing” category?

Yes. As recorded, he tore down an existing house so that he could build a bigger one. Money and arrogance gets one noticed anytime.

if you got the money why wouldn't you build what you want?

Oct 29, 2021, 4:33 PM

was it your grandma's old house or something?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He often referred to Clemson and the team or as...

your school/team or this school/team. He rarely used terms like we, our, or us when describing the university, the team or the community.

Tommy was nice guy and I liked him too, but there was always a clear disconnect and I think it was deliberate.

1. Aloof - jumped off plane or bus and rode alone on road games
2. Never talked with boosters, even large donors while on charters to away games
3. Hired Rob Spence
4. Benched Merriweather on last drive against Coots - cost us the game
5. Threw players under the bus to save his own a$$

Perhaps he was just socially inept!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He was a smarmy jack-ass with none of the people skills his

I don't think that's true.

I'm sure he wanted it to work out at Clemson. I also know some people are not that person that endears themselves to a school/community, not that that don't want to, it just doesn't come off that way b/c isn't in their personality.

Dabo is that guy. You either have "it", or you don't. And he had lot more of "it" and this is more of the kinda coach Clemson fans had wanted.

Sadly, Tommy was not the person that was going to tell the Administration, The president and the Trustees, to stop talking about the past, stop talking about other school's program and get their #### together and start getting on the same page.

Dabo was that guy. If Tommy would have said the exact thing, it probably would have come off as pompous. Even though he had the same intentions as Dabo.

Tommy was 3 things though:
1) He was gonna fight for facilities. He did get that going after a decade of falling behind.

2) He helped bring a nationally relevant shoe contract to the school. His name carried a lot behind that initial deal. Which helped in recruiting.

3) He was the coot killer. No matter what, he took the yard birds to the woodshed almost every year he was at Clemson.

Let's be honest, Tommy got us going in the right direction and laid a good foundation for Dabo to get started. He just couldn't get us to 10 wins or the ACC championship. However, it was a heck of a lot better than the direction we were going with Tommy West.

Without the facilities upgrades, the uptick in recruiting, shoe contract and winning seasons, I'm not sure Dabo makes it past year 2 or 3.

if he's not given a warm welcome, on, of all days the day his dad is being honored.

Edit, and on a day when are have Arch Manning in the house with a few other key recruits.

I think Tommy’s intentions were great, and he did a lot of good for the program.
He just had a different personality. Not everyone can be Dabo.
But he did find Dabo and deliver him to us!

Hope the Bowdens get the positive reception they deserve tomorrow.

No, I don't believe that. Based upon my own interactions with Tommy, I think it was his personality that might give someone that impression.

Screw Calford.

Tommy was a snot.

Too good for the likes of the Clemson faithful. No love loss when he got tossed though appreciate his role in Dabo’s hire.

Even my wife noted that to me at the games. He was totally disconnected, and I think the players felt it. I was a cheerleader then, it was even more obvious at the field level.
