Don’t agree with all the hysteria but

Nov 7, 2022, 12:25 PM

One things for sure we aren’t making the recruiting trail easier on ourselves, the performance from the amount of talent we have all the other programs are going to say Clemson is the place talent goes to die. I don’t see Dabo sitting on his hands for much longer though he’s not going let it all fall apart.

Well it’s obvious that Clemson can’t throw the ball .
Our O coaches have done absolutely nothing to help this team . We get away with being poorly coached until we face a team with equal talent.
I knew vs ND we had to throw the ball to win and yet with 2 weeks it’s the same crap that barely beats ACC teams .

Would be nice to be a fly on the wall to understand the exact problems

The problems are:

Our OL has been better this year, but we still can't run the ball well against a defense committing 7 or 8 guys to the run (unless the opposing defense is terrible vs the run). Most teams can't do that though. Notre Dame is one of the exceptions to that rule.

Our RBs are good but they are not gamebreaker type playmakers so they consistently get what is there for them and break a tackle here and there to get a little more. Neither RB is a home run threat. Even easier to roll more guys into the box.

Our WRs don't get great separation and that's only referring to the ones that get any separation at all.

DJ isn't scary as a scrambler so teams can comfortably play man coverage. Also since the RBs aren't home run threats, people feel confident covering them man-to-man with LBs. This prevents our non-separating WRs from "finding holes in the zone".

Our TEs get open but they aren't big play threats unless there is a coverage bust.

With that recipe, we have still been putting up pretty good offensive numbers this season because DJ's confidence had grown and he was throwing some passes into tight windows even without much separation and getting completions to open up the defense a little.

What changed Saturday night is that DJ lost some confidence after the Syracuse game. Instead of throwing into tight windows early in the game to loosen up the run defense and finding open WRs for a 2nd or 3rd option, he was being overly careful.

Then all of the guys in the box started created more pass rush causing DJs eyes to come down quicker which removed the 2nd and 3rd options as possibilities.

More guys in the box plus giving up 21 points with our offense/special teams also meant we couldn't save ourselves with the run game like we have a few times this season.

TLDR version:

Clemson offensive problems is that there are no home run threats to to put the defense on its heels and make everything easier.

Everyone knew we had to throw to win that game. But I'm thinking 45+ mph wind gusts impacted our plan.

There are currently 4 undefeated teams in the country. Clemson only recruits against 3 of them.

Oregon with 1 loss got beaten worse than Clemson and their head coach is flirting with Auburn.

Tennessee just lost and can't play defense.

Bama has 2 losses. LSU has 2 losses.

Clemson's defense gave up 14 points plus one more drive of about 15 yards that went for a TD.

Clemson's offense isn't that talented and can recruit on immediate playing time for elite players.

Why is that you think 1 game will hurt our recruiting pitch to high school kids?

Isn’t going to hurt our recruiting pitch, the lack of development OR misses in recruiting because not sure which one it is at this point will be used by other programs. Especially QBs idk how Cade hasn’t been given a legitimate shot at this point unless he isn’t showing enough in practice. That’s why I said it would be nice to be a fly on the wall because all we can do is speculate ?‍♂️

Apparently you are only talking offense and mostly QB.

If you want to argue that people can negative recruit against Clemson with QBs then I think you are right.

For the rest of the positions:

WR - 2 true freshmen are gaining playing time every game and 1 is coming off of a torn ACL.

RB - most productive players on the offense and both are young

TE - best receiving threats and being used more than ever

OL - best it has played in several years, 2nd year in a row a true freshman is starting

Of the teams I mentioned above who Clemson recruits against heavily, QB is the only position some of them can hold against Clemson. The only other possibility would have been WR after the '21 season, but now 2 guys have walked in and are getting major playing time immediately. That lets star WRs know they can start right now if they come to Clemson.

I feel you are only looking at this from a Clemson perspective and not the faults that the other programs have that cause things to balance out more so than not.

Absolutely and most likely over reacting as well, the sky isn’t falling at all but man it just feels weird. Clemson has never and will never be perfect but it’s been a long time since we had a loss like we did on Saturday. Even in some of the wins the offense just looks like the hardest offense in the world nothing looks easy anymore.

Re: Don’t agree with all the hysteria but

Nov 7, 2022, 1:28 PM

I completely agree that everything looks hard.

The TLDR version of my post above explains that perfectly.

We don't have a home run threat to make things easy.

Antonio Williams made it look easy vs FSU on his long TD, but that isn't really his game. He needs to be the distraction guy underneath that draws coverage and lets a real home run threat get over the top of the defense.

Also in the run game we currently have RBs who break tackles and turn 3 yard runs into 10 yards runs.

I'm not complaining about those runs but we need a RB who beats angles and turns 5-10 yard runs into 70 yard TD runs.

Shipley's 50 yd TD against Syracuse was easy, but it was the result of the slow safety taking the world's worst angle to tackle him more than it was about Shipley outrunning a good angle.

Also wondering what’s the blowback going to be when DJ transfers and Big Dave goes scorched earth on Clemson because I can definitely see that happening

Who cares what Big Dave does. I’m sure Dabo doesn’t. I never hear about Big Dave anymore.

I could careless, but some don’t understand the impact of social media these days especially with the younger generation. He’s the type that would be on all of the shows.

there may be a little from here and there, but on the whole what you're seeing is constructive criticism followed up with a shot of justified irritation.

The sky is not falling, but neither are things alright.

It's Not The Loss That Is Bothering Clemson Fans

Nov 7, 2022, 1:45 PM

It is the way Clemson lost. Got totally dominated in every phase of the game. Offense was inept. Defense could not stop the run. Special teams gave up a blocked punt everybody knew was coming.
