European river cruise

Has anyone taken a European river cruise? If so which cruise line and pros/cons? Did you book with the cruise line or a travel agent? My bride and I will hit 37 years and are thinking about celebrating with a river cruise on Viking to celebrate.

Any input would be appreciated

Viking is a good one. Only thing about river cruises is that some years the water level in the river is too low for the boat to transverse. When that happens, you need to know the policy of the cruise line regarding refunds or how they handle it for passengers.

I would suggest you Google Cruise Critic and look at customer reviews for Viking and others. Choosing the right month to cruise is important. Lots of info on internet if you search.

Yes. We took Avalon, owned by Globus, went down the Rhine. It was spectacular and well worth the money.
I would say Viking and Avalon are comparable and Avalon is a little cheaper. I didn’t touch anything once we hit the airport until we arrived at the airport to go home!!

My wife and I have cruised the Rhine (twice), The Seine, Danube, Duro (Portugal), and Poe (Italy). I'm sure there are othr great river cruise companies but we rate American owned UNIWORLD as five star. River cruising is a great way to vacation.

We used AAA travel.

Booked initially for our 25th wedding anniversary, but COVID had other plans. So we went a year later, but got some generous thank you credits from Viking for our patience. We will travel with them again..100%. Just got an email today saying they are doing a new route - 11 days on the Rhyne and Main Rivers.

Yes we did a Viking River Cruise this past summer. Paris to the Swiss Alps is what it is called. It was very nice and I would cruise with them again.

You do not need to use a travel agent, just go to their site and book it (very simple) or call them if you want to talk to someone.

I'd hurry though as cruises for this year start filling up. Some of the cruises have free international airfare.

I would use a local travel agent to book the cruise. Cruise line agents are very difficult to reach if you have a question or problem. Sometimes an agency that sells a lot of cruises will have access to additional perks. The cost is the same between the two.

Congratulations on your anniversary. I have friends that swear by Viking. I am looking at a Viking River cruise for later this year. All of my friends have stated that they do not regret a penny that they have spent on Viking. They are rated number one in both River and ocean cruises for a reason.

I’ve been on 4 river cruises. 3 in Europe and 1 in Egypt. I doubt Egypt is an option now. Went on Viking and Amadeus. As others have said, Viking is great value for the money.

We went on Viking last summer Amsterdam to Basal Switzerland with a pre and post trip extension. Viking is great. We used Viking to plan whole trip including air. They picked us up at airport and delivered us to the pre-stay in Amsterdam. We did not have to setup anything. Service, food, ship, and staff all first class. A shore excursion is included at every stop.

We did the Danube with Tauck and it was fantastic. Everything included in one price - excursions, tips, food, booze. Nice riverboats. We booked directly through Tauck. Top notch experience.

A friend of mine just did the Viking Cruise. Loved it. It’s seemed like he said about 7 grand each for he and his wife out the door.

My wife and two other couples booked the Rhine cruise last August. The water levels are a concern so best to buy the insurance. Food, hospitality and excursions were perfect. I suggest paying extra for the Silver Spirits package, mine definitely paid for itself. If you have never been to Prague...well worth the visit.
