after helping make a solid foundation and name for Clemson Football over 25+ years..

while present HC (and not AD combo titled) probably makes more than 99.9% of us in a year and probably more in a year than 75% of us will make in a lifetime.

Just stating facts and not saying what he brings to the table for Clemson economy & national exposure yearly isn’t worth his pay.

Am saying, after comparing & seeing today’s real market values of what coaches (& lawyers lawsuits) are paid, they still seems way out of line with inflation & years figured into the equation.

Would someone calculate what $19,000 is worth in today’s $ and add in 2 Natties for gravy money.

$19,000 in 1996 is worth about $38,000 in todays currency.

Yep..about what I thought~

Frank Howard would be due $38,000 per year now for his two titles/jobs..but if he’d won 2 Natties we could have paid him $50,000 a year and he’d probably been happy.

LOL~

1971 was his last year as AD. 1996 was the year he died

Adjusted for inflation, $19,000 in 1971 is the equivalent of $146,437 in 2024.

I can remember someone in the early 89s suggesting 30k was pretty good. Honestly, I would've thought 19k inn1971 was closer to 250.

It'll get you Chad Morris for a few months, in between trips to watch his son play and interviews for jobs that aren't "analyst."

What a head coach at a successful program earns has absolutely nothing with what any person on this site earns.

The coaching salaries today are incredible. I remember thinking in the late 80s about how rich Coach Ford was because he was making close to $200,000 a year. Now he would be making 10 million a year - unbelievable!

I recently found some salary info in old BOT meeting minutes. In the mid 1950s, Coach Howard was receiving the same salary as department deans, $6,000 a year. When the team had a good season, he got a $1,000 bonus.

Two of his top assistant coaches, Banks McFadden and Walter Cox, had $3,300 per year salaries and received $300 bonuses for good seasons.

Well guys - in 1970, with combat pay I made less than $3,000

Pretty sure it was around $240 a month for E-5 pay but not absolutely sure.

I would pay that much a year to keep him on retainer to hear his stories every weekend! A true treasure that many of us never had a chance to experience in person. Thank God we kept his door stop!

Coach Howard enjoyed talking with people and didn't miss many opportunities. I treasure the memories of my conversations with him, and he never said what you were expecting to hear.

His old office was across the hall from the ticket office at Fike. He always came out for a chat when he saw somebody buying tickets. As a student, I occasionally attended football practices, and he sometimes came over for chats.

I was on the sideline of a practice one day, and he came over. His question was, "Is it hot today?" I answered that it was pretty warm, and he responded, "It must be hot the way all of them are drag azzing around." When he went back out on the field, a star player came over saying, "The next time Coach asks you that, tell him that it's hotter than hill out here."

You could buy a brand new 3 bdr 2 bath house around 1970 for 20k. You can hardly but a used car to live in now for that.
