This opinion piece hits the nail on the head.

How are professional gamblers like the author of this piece supposed to make a living betting on college football when the players can come and go as they please?

"One of the reasons that the NBA will never become America’s favorite sport is that it is a player’s game. The players dictate everything. They wag the dog. Not only do "coaches" click their heels to the players, but so too does commissioner Adam Silver. It is impossible for working people to relate to a game like that. The average fan has no such power or leverage with his boss. And now college football is sliding down that path. It's becoming unrelatable."

Maybe the average fan would have a little more power or leverage with his boss if boomers like Rock Westfall weren't so anti-union and anti-worker's rights in general. Funny how all these free-market evangelists start sounding more like KarlMarx or LeonTrotsky when elite college football players (mostly young black men, by the way, but I'm sure that has nothing to do with it) decide they should be fairly compensated for the value they contribute to a billion-dollar industry.

I’m sure it will be a lot better for the athletes when the majority of the fans lose interest in college football and the dollars stop pouring in, other than for the handful of programs like Bama, OSU, A&M, etc. If guardrails aren’t put in place to rein this stuff in, I predict the majority of current college football fans (at least the ones willing to pay the money to IPTAY and for season tickets, and which is the same well that universities will have to be hitting up for money to pay NIL extortion) will throw in the towel on the whole mess. Then we’ll see what happens to college sports. Not just football either, because football funds a lot of the non-revenue sports as well.

now disgusting. I hate it when people in power take you for granted. That's what the powers that be in college football are doing with respect to the fans. "Oh, they'll always be there. We can do whatever we want, make as much money for everyone involved in the sport as humanly possible and continue to call it college football. And these gullible fools will still buy it!"

Clean up this sh--.

What's disgusting is you couldn't care less about the players putting their body on the line every week just to entertain you.

I wish there was a way to see how the “football players are just getting their fair share and all you boomers can go pound sand” and the “this is going to be the death of college football” groups break down by actual financial contribution to the athletic departments of the universities. I suspect the ones who are saying that the portal and NIL changes are AWESOME are the ones who watch most of the games on TV and actually provide very little in the way of financial support directly to the athletic departments, and the ones who believe that college football support is going to decline and fall out of favor are the people who actually spend money directly with the universities.

I'm excited for the new playoffs and the future of the sport in general.

Parity seems to be increasing across the board and players aren't treated like cattle anymore.

No reason that they shouldn't get a piece of the pie or be able to transfer freely just like a coach has always been able to.

I care, but not nearly to the same level as I did just a couple of years ago.
Players are spoiled. Then portal and then may not get an offer, thus become college dropouts.
I did not have a big issue with a small amount of monthly allowance, but the money to them is out of control.
My son, 4 years of college at a state school in Florida will cost 110,000. That is before, coaches, nutritionists, massage, tutors, strength workouts, great food, gear, and on and on. Leaving school with no debt.
He is correct. The game I loved is gone.
Why did Mukuba leave, why Pride went to Missouri?, etc. certainly not a better atmosphere or coaches or facilities or culture.
Sad. Just sad.

This article has some really stupid stuff

Examples,

From now on, there is no way a coach will play key players in winnable games if he knows his team is playoff-bound.
---
If Michigan and Ohio State meet with undefeated records and guaranteed playoff spots coming their way, there is no way they will go all-out in The Game. The same holds for Auburn and Alabama in the Iron Bowl or the rivalry of your choice.
---
The Game, the Iron Bowl, and Texas vs. Texas A&M in the Lonestar Showdown, to name a few matchups, stand a real chance of resembling August NFL preseason games.

Anyone that believes this nonsense needs their head examined. Don't swallow the hook of idiotic, hysterical statements in a clickbait article.

That all said, CFB has taken a very negative turn and we don't know what the destination is. But sensationalist blather adds nothing to the conversation.

While there might be a slight amount of hyperbole in some of the things you say are “really stupid stuff”, from my perspective the underlying points sound perfectly reasonable. And I can assure you I don’t need my head examined. I guess we’ll see how it plays out over the next few years.

Smart or ... the list goes on ... will ever be accused of being too soft on players.

Writer was already leaning shrill but that killed it for me.

College football's been a business since 1939. None of this is new, NIL/free agency wont kill it, either.

I waited for the NFL to price everyone out, for MLB to bore everyone to tears, the
NBA to alienate half the audience. And none of those have happened. Stadiums still sell out.
