South Carolina Highway 179 is an 0.67 mile state highway that starts at US 17 in the town of Little River on the coast and heads north to the North Carolina state line where it becomes NC 179 near Calabash, NC, the "seafood capitol of the world".

It's been fun to find out stuff about upstate SC colleges. Another interesting one is Wofford, a private liberal arts college in Spartanburg named for Benjamin Wofford, a Methodist minister. It was founded in 1854 (a lot of upstate schools are older than Clemson) on 175 acres and is a national arboretum. The original main building is listed on the National Register of Historical Places. Wofford has about 1800 undergraduates in 27 majors. The sports teams, the Terriers, compete in NCAA Division I FCS level in the Southern Conference. Notable alumni include Fisher DeBerry, Jerry Richardson, Wendy Nix, Jude Reyes, and Paul Atkins.

179 - Clemson FB Kevin Mack Gained 179 Receiving Yards

We just don’t see fullbacks like we used to! Clemson FB Kevin Mack (1980-1983) had a distinguished career as a college football player, an NFL player, and beyond. He was an incredibly high achiever in many, many ways!

Before Clemson:

According to BrownsNation.com, Mack’s life as a high achiever began before he arrived at Clemson. It began early in his life in Kings Mountain, NC:

Mack recalls that he first started playing football in Pop Warner games when he was 11 or 12 years old and played Pop Warner football for two or three years.
Mack’s Pop Warner coach taught Mack to have fun when playing football.

Mack recalls having fun playing Pop Warner football because it was easy for him to outrun everybody else on the field.

Despite his Pop Warner football success, initially in high school, Mack was more interested in track competitions than in playing football.

Mack was a successful sprinter, both in junior high school and high school, including that he ran a 4.4 time in the 40-yard dash.

Mack stated:
“I was in track mode before my sister and my high school football coach got me to think differently. And the rest, as they say, is history”.

While at Clemson:

According to that same BrownsNation article:
At fullback, Mack was Clemson’s leading rusher in 1983, with 862 rushing yards (a record for most yards rushing by a Clemson fullback) in 151 attempts – an impressive 5.7 average yards per carry, which was third in the Atlantic Coast Conference in 1983.

Scoring eight rushing touchdowns, Mack was tied for the most rushing touchdowns in the Atlantic Coast Conference in 1983.

Mack also caught nine passes for 116 yards in 1983.

Mack was Honorable Mention All-American in 1983.

Mack’s overall stats at Clemson (according to SportsReference.com):

1980:
- 23 carries for 93 yards (4.0 average)

1981:
- 71 carries for 272 yards (3.8 average)
- 2 rushing touchdowns
- 3 receptions for 23 yards (7.7 average)

1982:
- 52 carries for 193 yards (3.7 average)
- 2 rushing touchdowns
- 4 receptions for 40 yards (10.0 average)

1983:
- 151 carries for 862 yards (5.7 average)
- 8 rushing touchdowns
- 9 receptions for 116 yards (12.9 average)

Total (1981-1983):
- 297 carries for 1420 yards (4.8 average)
- 12 rushing touchdowns
- 16 receptions for 179 yards (11.2 average)

After Clemson:

Mack originally signed with the USFL Los Angeles Express. Soon afterward, the Cleveland Browns picked Mack with the 11th pick in the 1984 NFL Supplemental Draft. His impact was felt immediately. According to BrownsNation.com:

For the 1985 season (regular season and playoff games), Mack rushed for 1,160 yards on 235 attempts (a 4.9 average yards per carry) and seven touchdowns and caught 29 passes for 297 yards and three touchdowns.

In 1985, Mack started 16 of 17 Browns regular season and playoff games at fullback.

Based on Mack’s performance in 1985, he won the AFC Rookie of the Year Award from United Press International.

Mack was invited to the Pro Bowl and named to the NFL All-Rookie Team by the Pro Football Writers of America.

For his NFL career:
Mack played nine seasons with the Cleveland Browns. He had 1291 carries for 5,123 yards (3.97 average). He scored 46 touchdowns. H also made 197 receptions for 1602 yards (8.1 average). He scored 8 receiving touchdowns.

Clearly, the Browns are still appreciating Mack’s talents. Today, Mack is serving as the head of the Cleveland Browns alumni relations.

Clemson RB Adam Choice was a highly sought after 2014 recruit. It was considered a big win for Clemson when Choice chose to play in Chad Morris’ high powered offense for the Tigers. He appeared to be fulfilling his big potential during a strong freshman season. But that 2014 freshman season was cut short when he was injured against Boston College. He then redshirted the 2015 season.

According to his bio on ClemsonTigers.com:

Began career as one of the team’s top running backs during the first half of 2014 before suffering a season-ending knee injury at Boston College … redshirted the 2015 season and returned as a reserve running back for the 2016-18 seasons … respected team leader who was voted by his teammates as “Most Inspirational” after completing his career with 1,250 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns on 239 carries along with 22 receptions for 179 yards in 561 snaps over 45 games.

https://clemsontigers.com/sports/football/roster/adam-choice/

Overall, he achieved the following stats during his time at Clemson according to Sports-Reference.com:

2014:
- 50 carries for 218 yards (4.4 average)
- 1 rushing touchdown
- 9 receptions for 90 yards (10.0 average)

2015:
Injured - Redshirt

2016:
- 45 carries for 158 yards (3.5 average)
- 4 receptions for 38 yards (9.5 average)

2017:
- 67 carries for 326 yards (4.9 average)
- 6 rushing touchdowns
- 8 receptions for 48 yards (6.0 average)

2018:
- 77 carries for 548 yards (7.1 average)
- 7 rushing touchdowns
- 1 receptions for 3 yards (3.0 average)

Total (2014-2018):
- 239 carries for 1250 yards (5.2 average)
- 14 rushing touchdowns
- 22 receptions for 179 yards (8.1 average)

After Clemson, Choice signed with the Seattle Seahawks as undrafted free agent. He later signed with the USFL Bay Area Sea Lions.
