214 - Clemson Hall of Fame WR Gary Barnes Gained 214 Yards in 1959

Gary Barnes’ nine receptions include a key 65 yard TD in Bluebonnet Bowl win over #7 TCU! (Correct me if I am mistaken, 2k®, but I believe you recently mentioned this Bluebonnet Bowl being your first Clemson game.) Obviously, a fun way to close out the season by beating a Top 10 ranked team in a bowl game.

From ClemsonTigers.com:

Barnes was a starting receiver and running back for Frank Howard’s Clemson Tigers between 1959-61, as freshmen were not eligible during his era. In 1959, he started all 11 games and had nine receptions for 214 yards and three scores as a sophomore.

Clemson won the ACC Championship in 1959 and finished the season ranked 11th in the AP Poll. The Tigers finished the season with a 23-7 victory over seventh-ranked TCU in the Bluebonnet Bowl, the highest-ranked team Frank Howard defeated in his 30 years at Clemson. Barnes had a key play in that victory, a 68-yard scoring pass from Harvey White, the longest touchdown reception by a Clemson player in a bowl game until 2018.

Barnes finished his Clemson career with 39 receptions for 719 yards and six touchdowns. His 18.4 yards per reception ranks fourth best in Clemson history. He ranked in the top 10 in the ACC in total receiving yards all three years he played for the Tigers.

After his senior season, Barnes was a third-round draft choice, the 41st pick of the 1962 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers.

Following his playing career, Barnes worked for Chevron then in the textile industry. In 1986, he became a municipal judge in Clemson, a position he held for 30 years.

Barnes was inducted into the Clemson Hall of Fame in 2002 and into the state of South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005.

Additional Info on Barnes, from WYFF:

Barnes finished his Clemson career with 39 receptions for 719 yards and six touchdowns. His 18.4 yards per reception ranks fourth best in Clemson history. He ranked in the top 10 in the ACC in total receiving yards all three years he played for the Tigers.

North Carolina Highway 214 is a 17.8 mile state highway that runs from U.S. 74/76 Business near Whiteville east to NC 211 in Bolton and through Hallsboro and north of Lake Waccamaw.

Burrells Ford Campground is a place I haven't been but wish I had back when I camped, hiked, and fished a lot. It is next to King Creek near where it joins the Chattooga River and above Mountain Rest. It has a parking area with a short hike to a campground and hiking trails to Chattooga one way and King Creek Falls the other. You can fish along the way or stand on a rock in the river with your honey. Either way would be fun.

214 AD was a common year that started on a Saturday.

It was, as any Roman candle could tell you, known as the Year of the Consulship of Messalla and Suetrius. The kingdom of Osroene becomes a province of the Roman Empire this year.

214 years ago, it was 1810. Happenings that year included:

January 12 - The marriage of Napoleon and Josephine is annulled.

March 11 - Napoleon marries Marie-Louise of Austria by proxy in Vienna.

June 23 - John Jacob Astor forms the Pacific Fur Company.

September 8 – The Tonquin sets sail from New York Harbor with 33 employees of John Jacob Astor's newly created Pacific Fur Company on board. After a 6-month journey around the tip of South America, the ship arrives at the mouth of the Columbia River and Astor's men establish the fur-trading post of Fort Astoria.

As you can see, 1810 was a pretty slack year in US history. And as far as the rest of the world, it was pretty much the carryings-on of the Little Corporal Napoleon, and not much else.
