South Carolina Highway 202 is a 4.52 mile state highway that runs from US 76 in Little Mountain, crosses I-26 headed north, and ends at US 176 near Pomaria, all in Newberry County.

The Foothills Trail is a 76 mile trail along the South Carolina/North Carolina border that starts at Table Rock State Park and ends at Oconee State Park. The bros and I hiked a 28 mile portion of it from Laurel Valley near Laurel Fork Falls to Whitewater Falls several times in the 80s and early 90s. We crossed the Toxaway, Horsepasture, Thompson, and Whitewater rivers along the top of Lake Jocassee and ended at Lower and Upper Whitewater Falls. It was fun and tough making long uphill climbs with a 50 pound pack, fixing food, boiling water, pitching tents, repacking, etc. But there were some spectacular views and great memories like waking up to a soft rain on a wet ground and reaching Whitewater Falls where these girls were waiting for us... not! At least we didn't see bears.

202 - Clemson QB Jimmy Addison Completed 202 Passes for the Tigers

According to Sports-Reference.com, Clemson QB Jimmy Addison (1956-1967) completed 202 of his 393 Clemson passes for 2616 yards.

ClemsonTigers.com has a great story on Addison’s recruitment to Clemson:

Unbeknownst to him, another Alabama great with Clemson ties had spent the day in Fairfax. Fred Cone, former Tiger great (Clemson Ring of Honor member) was an assistant for Frank Howard. Cone was watching tape at the local high school when Addison’s play stood out.

As the day progressed, Cone became more and more interested in the small quarterback who would go on to be nicknamed “The Needle.” Cone was surprised that Addison had not decided on a college destination and was still on the market. He then spent several hours with Addison’s parents (Virginia, Bill). A scholarship had been agreed to in the living room before Addison had even returned home.

“When I walked in the living room, Coach Fred Cone was there with my mom and dad,” recalled Addison. “They had already accepted a scholarship. It was fortuitous that I was not there. Coach Cone told me later that if he had seen me, I would not have been at Clemson. It is hard to play football when you are only 135 pounds.”

There were other hurdles for Addison to clear. Early the next morning, Cone and Addison made their way to Clemson. Practice had already been going on for four weeks and school had been in session for two weeks. Addison had taken the ACT in high school, but Clemson required an SAT score for admission.

Less than 48 hours from playing an American Legion game in Alabama, he had taken the SAT, was enrolled at Clemson and was the ninth quarterback on the roster.

The same ClemsonTigers.com article describes Addison’s time after Clemson as well:

Following graduation, Addison earned his law degree from Virginia, and before retiring five years ago, he spent nearly 40 years in real estate law with the renowned Troutman Sanders firm in Atlanta, Ga., and was named a partner in 1976.

Despite such a busy work schedule, Addison has always had time for Clemson. He has served the university in many ways over the years, including the Clemson University Foundation as vice chair and Advancement Board for the School of Humanities.

With all of the success at Clemson and in life after college, Addison is just what a Bond Distinguished Athletes Award recipient is made of.

...

The Bond Distinguished Athletes Award was created to honor Tiger athletes who exemplify character, citizenship and service.

with his history stuff, we'd have a lot of good stuff early. But I'm guessing he's in dream land, hopefully not with Edgar Allan Poe - Out of Space - Out of Time. You wonder what was going through the minds of Poe and writers like Stephen King when they wrote.

202 - RB Lester Brown had 202 Receiving Yards in His Clemson Career

According to Sports-Reference.com, Clemson RB Lester Brown (1976-1979) made 17 receptions for 202 yards (11.9 average). That was in addition to his 464 carries for 2115 rushing yards (4.6 average). Impressive stats for sure!

https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/lester-brown-1.html

But, those numbers do not tell the full story. According to ClemsonTigers.com, Danny Ford described Lester as:

“not a bulky back, but a slicing runner with a knack for finding the endzone,” Lester Brown was one of the best running backs in school history. The Myrtle Beach, SC native still is second on Clemson’s career touchdown list with 32, behind only All-ACC running back Travis Zachery, who was a senior in 2000.

Brown’s 31 career rushing touchdowns are second-most in school history, also behind Zachery, who had an ACC-record 50. Brown was a First-Team All-ACC selection in 1978 when the team went 11-1 and finished ranked #6 in the nation.

….

For his career, Brown had 2,228 rushing yards, becoming only the fourth player in Clemson history to rush for over 2,000 yards. That total also stands 11th on the school’s career rushing list. In his time at Clemson, he totaled 192 points, eighth-most in Tiger history. Brown’s number was called frequently, as he is 10th in career carries (505). His best single-game performance came against Virginia when he totaled 178 rushing yards on 19 carries in 1978.

Remembered for having tremendous leaping ability when he got close to the goal line, Brown jumped over defenders into the endzone on numerous occasions. His unique touchdown celebration dance became a common sight at Death Valley.

Brown graduated from Clemson after his professional playing career ended. He played seven years in the Canadian Football League as a running back for Saskatchewan, Montreal, Toronto, and Winnipeg. His son Corey is currently a sprinter on Clemson’s track team.

a thing back in this Year of the Consulship of Severus and Antonius.

Emperor Septimius Severus returns to Rome after a five-year absence. Festivals are held to celebrate his six-year reign. Severus undertakes changes in the imperial government, giving the Roman army a dominant role, raising pay in the legions and permitting legionaries to marry in order to secure their loyalty.

An edict bans conversions to Christianity and all Christian propaganda. A Roman law bans female gladiators. The Pantheon is restored.

202 years ago, it was the year 1822. Events in that year:

March 19 - Boston, Massachusetts, becomes a city following a vote.

April 30 – United Kingdom: President of the Board of Control in the House of Commons, George Canning, moves to repeal a law that prohibited Roman Catholic peers from sitting or voting in the House of Lords; the motion passes, 235–223, on its second reading, but the House of Lords declines to pass it.

June 6 – Alexis St. Martin is accidentally shot in the stomach, which leads the way to William Beaumont's studies on digestion. (That has the groce, to me.)

July 3 – Charles Babbage publishes a proposal for a difference engine, a forerunner of the modern computer, for calculating logarithms and trigonometric functions. Construction of an operational version will proceed under British Government sponsorship (1823–32), but it will never be completed. (And you thought companies stretching out government contracts was a recent thing!)

November 9 – Action of 9 November 1822: USS Alligator (1820) engages three pirate schooners off Cuba, as part of the West Indies anti-piracy operations of the United States.

Dates Unknown: The Rocky Mountain Fur Company (Ashley's Hundred) leave from St. Louis, Missouri, setting off a major increase in fur trade.

Coffee is no longer banned in Sweden at some point during this year, as well.
