How many on here FAST for better health and/or weight control?

17

Jan 18, 2023, 12:31 PM

Seems 20% of kids and about 40%+ of American adults are Obese..with maybe up to 65% of all being overweight to some degree.

I fast occasionally, skipping breakfast (do have a coffee with palm full of walnuts, if needed) and then have 1st meal around Noon to 2pm.

Surprisingly Don't get hungry!

It helps the body to burn fat longer, clean out the unwanted crapp, aids in organs healing where needed and lowers insulin & blood sugar levels.

Then, eat same normal calories in an 8-hour time frame..and remember it's better not to snack so often too since each time one eats the body has to start up again and pump insulin to the cells.

Go TiGERS..live better, longer & slimmer!

I find that if I FAST, I can pretty much eat whatever I want and will not gain weight.
I drink water every day until about 1:00-2:00 pm, and then eat a good lunch. I eat supper and desert around 6:00 pm, and then start all over again. It works for me.

Great topic, LBB! Thanks for posting. I also do Intermittent Fasting 20/4, and also 2-3 day water fasts. And I've been Keto for 4 years. Inflammation in my body/joints is completely gone, my mind is clearer than it's ever been, much higher energy level, and absolutely no issues with low or high blood sugar ever. And I am never hungry. Many people living this way have cured Type 2 Diabetes, high blood pressure, and other metabolic syndrome issues, and have been able to stop taking all medications for these symptoms.

Anyone wanting more information about this should search YouTube for Dr. Jason Fung and Amazon for his books. His info will show you all the medical research data that you'll need. You can change your life with a high fat, high protein, very low carb diet paired with Intermittent Fasting. And you'll lose weight.

There are some pretty good studies showing cognitive improvements that have come from it. The other aspects of it though, don't really have anything to do with fasting in itself. Fasting is (mostly) just a tool to aid in putting the body into a caloric deficit. The american diet is riddled with sugary breakfast cereals and carbs that spike our insulin and blood sugar levels and they are in yoyo the rest of the day. So really, the same thing can be achieved by making better decisions with proteins and fats early in the day! Just FYI if anyone isn't into the actual fasting part...

I made it 42 hours before I ate lunch today. Fasting is super healthy for you and has tons of benefits. There is a reason why it was so important in scripture, not just spiritually, but physically as well.

I lost over 100 pounds fasting. Don't go after fab diets just eat once a day around 5pm. Once you get good at that, then try to push for a couple days at a time.

We've been tricked into thinking that we are supposed to eat 3 meals a day when in fact our bodies were designed to go days at a time without food.

If you eat healthy proteins and fats and avoid simple carbs

6

Jan 18, 2023, 1:54 PM

while increasing your activity level, you won't need to fast. Simple carbs are like eating packets of sugar. It spikes your blood sugar and signals your body to build fat. By seeking out healthy proteins and fats, you will get all of the carbs you need. Start your day(and every meal)with healthy proteins and fats, satiate your hunger and avoid the "carb flu" an hour and a half later.

Most people don't realize how much activity it takes to be healthy and how quickly and easily their body's adapt to the increased activity level.

However, please post in the proper forum.

People think that one of the best ways to lose weight is to spend hours in the gym on a elliptical, bike or treadmill, and that is simply not the case. Most people end-up getting frustrated and quit when they don't see any results. Simply eating healthy proteins and fats that boost you metabolism works far better. It's sustainable and it's effective.

When I graduated from Clemson in 1985 and again in 1988, I weighed 185 pounds. At one point, my weight increased to around 230. I was eating pretty much whatever I wanted and I wasn't very active, so my weight really elevated. That trend would have probably continued had it not been for the sudden and unexpected lost a close family member. He was eating pretty much whatever he wanted, he wasn't very active, and it ended-up costing him his life. I promised my wife and my children that I would not let that happed. I was determined and over the course of the next 12 to 18 months, due to healthier eating and exercise, I lost 45 pounds to get back down to 185. That was about 12 years ago. Today I weigh about 190.

I’m a big fan of intermittent fasting. I opt for lunch as my first meal of the day and eat pretty much whatever I want until 8pm. I’m not super strict with it and will deviate some on the weekends. Setting aside the weight control benefit, the mental clarity I gain makes it a worth while endeavor. From everything I’ve read about the topic, the science seems pretty clear and benefits are undeniable particularly for men. Women have to be a little more careful when fasting particularly if pregnant or breastfeeding. I haven’t done much long term fasting (at least not since my wrestling years), but would recommend electrolyte and calorie free protein supplements of some sort for longer fasts to avoid getting lightheaded. If you are new to it, the first week or so can be a struggle, but you will be amazed how much better you feel once your body adjusts.

I fast 16/8 daily and have for the past 2 years and I have to say I am in the best shape of my life now and I am 45. I work out 5 days a week! 267 down to lean 185

My wife lost 37 pounds with the same 18/6 and is back to wearing her high school size. No working out whatsoever. 167 down to 130

Also what I find is as long as you stick to it you will pretty much maintain your healthy weight.

Re: How many on here FAST for better health and/or weight control?

1

I fast frequently and usually not hungry at all until I think about it. Still wear the same size jeans I did in college 33/32s . Lots of water, and spend 30 minutes stretching every morning. Less health hurdleI tend to have a little too much red wine/beer on the weekends. Working on that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I OMAD fast because its easier than strict Keto for me.

3

Jan 18, 2023, 2:43 PM

Fasting is the laziest way to get huge health benefits. And I don't hardcore fast. I One Meal A Day (OMAD) fast. I try to go 18-20 hours between ANY eating. The key isn't eating less. I eat like a bear on cocaine when I eat dinner. But you have to avoid all calories during the fasting window. Snacking ruins most of the extreme health benefits of fasting.

I used to think fasting was just going hungry to "diet" but when I found out his was regenerative and anti-aging and increased human growth hormone and helped reset the gut microbiome I fell in love with it.

I try to avoid carbs/grains as much as possible but they slip by sometimes. I love ice cream. A lot.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Plus one for loving ice cream! I could eat it every day, but

Re: How many on here FAST for better health and/or weight control?

5

Jan 18, 2023, 2:47 PM

I have been doing some form of fasting for about 3.5 years now. Fasting (and eating smarter) helped me lose about 140 lbs. I started it to lose weight and get healthier, as my bloodwork was a nightmare. Two years later, I dropped the weight and my doctor is fairly impressed with my bloodwork now. Eating right is the key.

I tend to overeat at meals, so I have to tighten up on my food intake sometimes when my weight starts going up.

I've done 16/8, OMAD, OMEOD, 24 hr, 48 hr, just to see what works. These days, I normally eat just lunch and dinner, with no snacking. I might eat breakfast on a weekend, so on those days I might skip dinner. I drink black decaf coffee and water probably 98 percent of the time. I haven't had (or wanted) a soda or sweet tea in over a year.

You really have to find what works for you. When my A1c and Insulin levels were high, I couldn't lose weight, no matter how much I would fast. Once I got those at a good level (below 6 and 10, respectively), I could lose weight. However, for me, it could take several months to get them to those levels. THAT is why most people "give up" on weight loss attempts, it can take months for your body to start working with you, not against you.

Sorry this is so long. I got on a roll there!

I’m 55 now and weigh less than I did when I graduated over 30 years ago.

My Grandad lived to be 95 years old and he ate grits, eggs (overeasy), sausage and toast every morning that I could remember. He didn't eat lunch and ate dinner at around 6pm, in bed by 8:30pm and up by 5am. He was 5'9 and weighed 165lbs soaking wet until the day he passed.

Of course, he also worked constantly whether it be piddling in his shop or his garden.

I don't doubt the theory that lean protein and low carbs are healthy, but I do think activity is a very key ingredient to maintaining a healthy weight.

Back then I would eat one meal a day at night and very little exercise. My mom would keep telling me it was bad for me and breakfast was the most important meal of the day etc.
Breakfast is still my least favorite meal of the day. I’m just not hungry in the morning.
I don’t really fast on purpose now but many days I don’t eat anything until around 2pm and just have a snack at night.

I don’t disagree with you from a mental and spiritual standpoint but the majority of the weight you lost was water.

A single gram of carbo-HYDRATE holds 6 grams of water. There are 453 grams to make a pound. Simply cutting 75 grams of carbs per day you lose 1 lb of water weight. Not to mention your body flushed existing sub Q water.

The moment you eat a bowl of Cheerios your veins probably popped and you began to regain the size.
