I have a question for the Baby Boomers

My brother and I are both considered “millennials” by definition, and he is in his early 40s and I will be 40 next year. When we hear opinions from the generation before us, we still hear “all you millennials have ruined everything, you’re too young to know anything, blah blah…..” We are being grouped in with kids that have never known “pre-internet” life.

My question to the Baby Boomers is:

When you were in your 40s, was the Greatest generation still holding 90% of the decision making positions in the economy, and telling you that you were too young to know anything?

This is not a sarcastic post, I’m really just curious.

Baby boomers were born in the 50s so they'd be in their 70s now.

From what my parents have told me, in traditional industries, yes.

Boomers were born between 1946 and 1964. I was born at the end of that period but feel more like a Gen X at times

Born in 1964. I get called a boomer, but related more with Gen Xer's

The bottom line is that if the country in going in the wrong direction the previous generation will never like what then next generation is doing...

Let's look at it like this:
Gen1 builds something good
Gen2 made something good into something great and Gen 1 appreciates their efforts
Gen3 began resting on the laurels of gen2 and got the ire of gens 1&2. Some improvements are still made.
Gen4 is even more self-serving than Gen3...gets hated by Gen2 and earns the disgust of Gen3..gen 1 is dead for the most part.
Gen5 fully participates in the destruction of what gen1 and gen2 built...Gen3&4 have no idea what to do but complain that it is bad.
Gen6 Comes to believe that Gens1-5 are simply evil and is wholesale into destroying everything.
Gen7 Grows up in the equivalent of a failed society
Gens10-15 Think a destroyed society and its suffering is normal
Gen16 Builds something good.

Actually Baby Boomers were born from 1946 - 1964. So the age spread would be form 59 - 77. But recently they have separated them into two categories. Boomer 1 and Boomer 2. Boomer 1 being born between 1946 - 1954. While Boomers 2 were born between 1955 - 1964. I fall into the second category barely making it and not being born a generation X.

But the country was much better then.

At one point 1962 to 1964 fell into a gap between Boomers & Gen X. It was kind of a relief when we were finally bumped up into the Boomer generation, even though it somehow made us older than when we were unclassified. Now people seem so focused on the Millennials that Gen X must be feeling a little neglected...

Unfortunately the same things as before are still going on but maybe in a different way… coups, as well as media-promoted segregation and public lynchings in the press all the time.

Anything to keep us fighting each other so we don’t realize who the real enemy is and come together to restore humanity to the world.

Sociologically, Boomers were born in the '40s and '50s. The idea that the generation extends into the '60s is a media myth and one that doesn't even make sense as more babies were born in '65 than in '45 or '50. People born in the '60s had nothing to do with the social upheaval and "Youthquake"of the true Boomer generation. But yes, the Greatest Generation (my beloved grandparents RIP) gave up power to the Boomers at retirement age.

I think every generation sees their generation, and their parents' generation (and maybe all older ones) to some extent as "better" in general than younger, newer ones. I know my parents thought my generation was going to ruin the world (maybe we did, LOL!), and their parents thought they were. It's always been that way, and always will be.

Personally, I'd much rather live now than in previous generations, because overall, I think the world is a much better place. The truth is, change is constant and inevitable, and even though we have made huge strides in technology and knowledge in general, we also lose a little something special with every year, decade, and advancement. That didn't start with boomers or millenials, and it won't end with them. Be grateful for the wonderful advancements, work to preserve what's really important, accept the inevitable changes, and be happy, not fearful and grumpy.

Boomer here.
I don’t agree with your premise that Boomers are telling Millennials they are too young to know anything. Most Boomers I know are retired and most corporate organizations I’m familiar with are run by Millennials.
If your being told, as a millennial, that your too young to know anything by a Boomer, well I contend that is likely more of a one-off than the norm.
Having said that, as a 65 year old, I have 20 years of experience and wisdom I didn’t have when I was 45; but a 45 year old today has unique experiences, energy and passion that I lack.
At the end of the day I think these generation generalizations are foolish and non-productive. We have to strive to understand and respect everyone’s unique life experiences.

The answer to your question is YES, they made many decisions. However, the difference I believe is we looked at our older generation as wise people and looked to them for wisdom and guidance. What I see now with our younger generation is they already know everything and laugh at suggestions from older people. Just my experience.

Yes, the previous generation before us Boomers thought we were probably not as hard-working but felt we had more opportunities like a college education. Most of our parents only completed high school and began work or entered the armed forces afterward. However, we had the best music decade ever - the 1960s! The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Motown, the Beach Boys, the Doors - I could go on forever!

I've been retired for 13 years and given that you are retiring shortly I'll share a bit of retiree wisdom.

First, learn to say "NO" after you retire. People will see you as "free labor". I ended up on the local city council, board for the local golf course, advising a women's investment club, as well as several other time consuming tasks.

Second, for my wife and me it was one of the most difficult years of our marriage (46 years so far). The reasons were two fold, we both retired from careers where we were use to telling other people what to do and having those tasks completed in a timely manner. That doesn't work well with a spouse. Second, being around each other 24/7 was just simply a lot more time together than we were use to and we got on each others nerves quite a bit.

Hope these insights might help in some way. Congrats on retiring and good luck. Enjoy life.

and, yeah, never flew on a plane until I was in college and didn't have a passport until I got one myself after graduating from college.

It really is a different world now in terms of US affluence and what is considered normal middle class behavior.

I agree with you Tigersense. I see it every day with the younger generation at work. Don’t follow rules, give 6 hours of work during a 10 hour shift, late for work and complain about getting penalized when they live 10 minutes away, staying on break too long, entitled to everything without working for it, use of cell phone at work area when it’s against the rule to have it on your possession at the work area, etc,etc.. I can go on and on. Bottom line is this, if they continue with entitlement without merit, I hate to see where this world will be in the next 10 - 20 years.

A lot thought we were all hippies or protesting the Vietnam War, or druggies. The fact is that the United States was still a very conservative country, and most people wanted to work for a better future. It was easier then... a dollar went a long way, and without the internet or cable TV the world was a much more innocent place.
Unfortunately your generation and succeeding generations have not had that innocence. Y'all have had to see everything in the world happening in real time, no filters. In my opinion your generation is much smarter than ours, but too much knowledge of world affairs has ruined how happy and productive you could be. I wish you all could have what we had.
Sorry for the rant... but you asked.

I'm a Boomer and when I was in my late 30s and 40s, I was in the transition to making the decisions. 20 years of experience and knowledge, along with the drive.

My son is a millennial (42) and he was being interviewed for a VP position when he was 30 so he knows something. Now he works on his own and for another company. Everything he makes extra for the other company translates to a percentage ownership of the company.

In summary, I had boomer's and millennial's work for me before I retired and there is good in both. The social media generations (birth to present) are the ones that scare me.

If anything it just further shows that people your son’s and my age are being grouped in with a bunch of kids that we have nothing in common with. I think I have way more in common with my Granddad’s generation than I do people coming out of college today.

I am raising my child with the belief that you work for what you want, and you get what you’ve earned. Treat people how you want to be treated.

No generation had it easier than the boomers. Wages were at all-time highs, homes were affordable, college was so cheap that you could pay your tuition with a part-time summer job. Then they grew up and pulled the ladder up behind them for tax cuts and sent a lot of good jobs overseas for cheap consumer goods.

I'm a boomer (1947), I grew up in a very rural part of this country, I remember getting electricity, I remember getting indoor plumbing, I went to a one room school ( 8 grades, 9 students) my teacher was 16 years old. We started working when we got old enough to work. After we moved near a "big city" population 14,000, I got a paper route, worked in the fields during the summer picking beans and berries. The farmers bus would come around to various locations and pick up kids to take them to the fields, usually around 4:30 am or 5 am, they'd bring you back around 4 pm. If I wanted a baseball glove I had to earn the money myself. I always worked from the time I was about 10 on.

You knew at the beginning of the school year that your parents were going to get you a pair of shoes, a couple shirts and pairs of levi's and you were expected to make them last the year.

As for how easy things were, Vietnam comes to mind. Nuff said on that. I did use my GI bill to pay for college and I did work 16 hours a week in a factory while I was going to college full time. And yes I did get through without student loan debt. I did manage to pay for my MBA by myself.

Also, what tax credits are you talking about?

Now some keyboard warrior comes on here and calls me a “punk ###.” You are acting exactly like every young kid on the internet that is the problem right now. I would bet every dollar I got, that you would not talk like that to me, or anybody else in person.

No worries. I agree that the millennials overall have been pretty disappointing. I just wish they would divide what is considered a millennial and what isn’t. I graduated college in December of 2008, entered the workforce in Jan 2009. It was a horrible time to begin a career for anybody. I’ve had to work extremely hard and learn a ton of things on the fly. It always makes me laugh and shake my head when I am grouped in with the overall narrative of lazy/entitled young people because I don’t believe my life has been anything like that. Smartphones and wokeness didn’t become a big thing until I was in my 30s. I didn’t want to turn this thread into me validating myself or anything like that either.

When I was in my 40s, I didn't get a lot of static, from the previous generation, however; my teens and early twenties was a different story. I will say this; in my experience in the work force, and watching this next generation, there is a lot to be desired, from a lot of them. That is a lot of them, not all. Some are very conscientious, and hard working. And I'm not saying this because I dislike the upcoming kids. I just worry about their work ethic, and what they expect out of life.

To get to your question, I don't know what percentage, was making the decisions, but I'd say a lot of the WW II gang was still running things. One thing that I've seen, in a lot of people in decision making positions, positions of authority, is they don't like to be told; you're wrong, or maybe your idea isn't such a good one. It's not an age thing, It's a people thing, an ego thing. It's who we are, it's how we roll. Once again, I say; a lot of people, not all.

I don't know if this is an answer to your question, or just me blabbering on, but in my mind, the generation we've tabbed as "The Greatest Generation", was indeed a great generation. Even when they were telling me how lazy I was, and how I would never amount to anything. That's how I felt about them, how I will always think of them. They accomplished a lot, not to mention that they saved the world from the Nazis and the Imperial Japanese. Maybe their criticism drove me to be a better man, one that was going to prove them wrong. I know none of this probably answered your question, but you got me on a roll, and I couldn't stop.

The next great generation will be the one that guides our country back to The Doctrine of Jesus Christ, and again, this is my way of thinking.

They know everything and expect to be and have what people who’ve put 25 years into a profession have (position, influence, money). I know of one corporation that has made the decision to stop hiring gen z’s and hire older employees and will just wait 10-12 years on the next generation.

baby boomers had the highest rate of teen pregnancies, abortions, divorces, alcohol and substance abuse, violent crimes, and incarceration. They benefited heavily from New Deal policies, then pulled up the ladder behind them at the ballot box instead of leaving a future for the following generations, so it is rich when they say that millennials ruined everything, especially since they raised them.

My grandkids (2) are millennials, I'm a boomer (1947). JFK was 43 when he was elected president, I think he was certainly the youngest president in modern US history. I think this did a lot to impact how my generation saw the combination of age relative to control of power. He was a WWII vet, so he did have a foot in the "greatest generation". I often argued as a 30-40 year old that once we wrestled power from the WWII vets we could actually fix things. Obviously, that hasn't happened.

My generation had a lot of things going for it that other generations haven't had, we knew we were "the best and the brightest". The 50s were a transition from war to producing luxury goods, cars, tvs, homes, etc. Then we benefitted from "the pill" and sexual freedom was something no other generation had every experienced. Then of course we had "our parent's war" (Vietnam), that killed a lot of us (USAF 1966-70).

Many Boomers wasted our educational advantages as well as our focus on creating a great future for this country through the excesses of freedom that we were experiencing in the 60-70. This was still while the "greatest generation" still actually controlled the real world.

Yes, I'm living a comfortable life funded by social security and my investments.

Now back to millennials, my granddaughter graduated with honors from a local public university 7 years ago. She's expressed and interest in a post graduate degree and I've told her I'll pay for it. So we are getting together in a couple weeks to layout our plan for her MBA. She's a very bright intelligent caring woman and I want her to get ahead while she's still young (well young to me). My grandson, we'll I don't know, he's off in Malaysia with a woman he's fallen for and he says he loves it over there. I worry, he doesn't have the education his sister has and I doubt that he has a long term game plan for his life. So there you have it.... Any questions?

I think you have to consider the dynamic involved when comparing one generation to the next. And that is that the Greatest Generation was born of the Great Depression. Immediately followed by WWII. The hardships and sacrifices made by them and THEIR parents is something we can scarcely imagine.

Following that I believe the overall mantra was that their children were not going to go through that and proceeded to make things "better". A relative term, since it really didn't work out that way for everyone. But somewhere along the line the terms "want" and "need" either lost their meaning or changed dramatically.

I was born at the end of the Boomer generation. We had children late and mine have never know a world without things like the internet. But when I hear them say things like "I need.....", I give a little pause and ask them if it's a "want" or a "need".

I think the problem we face is that we can no longer trust the decision makers, whoever they may be or from whatever generation they belong. But more to your point, it's not necessarily that you're too young to know anything. Inexperienced may be a better term. Take Climate change or global warming for instance. People of the later generations are discovering this as they get older. We've been hearing it since the 70's. That's just one example. Please don't hijack that into a debate on climate change.

puts me in the best position to judge all things in a world of constant change where past experience
may no longer be relevant. Both candidates are younger than I and mentally no longer up to the job.
This is dangerous for each of us no matter which age group we belong to. I have never been so concerned.

The truth is that after the Gen X'ers there's a discernable "talent-gap" drop-off starting with Millennials. It's very noticeable according to the Boomers I talk with. Myself, I'm a Gen X.

Call it lack of maturity, accountability, manners, communication skills, morals, grit, social skills, etc.... The participation Trophy Generation overall seems dumber and less impressive than previous generations. Which should make it easy for you to stand out. Not every Millennial fits the bill, just the majority. The constant excuse making and lack of accountability by Millennials in the workplace makes them very unpopular with my generation btw.

We've been sliding progressively backwards since The Greatest Generation IMOP. The Greatest Generation complained that the Boomers were hippies. Boomers complained about X'ers being "lazy". X'ers can't believe how entitled / inept Millennials are. Millennials probably think Gen Z are worse, etc...

Don't take it personally. Just being Accountable will put you way ahead of the curve. :). Don't let your generation define you.

You're a product of your upbringing. As parents, we (Gen X'ers) did a piss-poor job raising our kids. Blame us.

As I’m a boomer, you are obviously asking for my opinion. Which is: you are doing the same thing you are attributing to ‘boomers’, and that is making the generalization that ‘all boomers’ are treating ‘all millennials’ identically.

So, no, I do not blame all of today’s problems on your generation. No, not ‘all’ of my generation blamed the ‘Greatest generation’ for all of our woes.

However, while in my 30’s and 40’s, I was still ‘junior’ to those of the prior generation, and had not ‘accumulated’ or ‘obtained’ the knowledge, experience, or wealth of that ‘senior’ generation.

Nor did that entire generation control all of the decision making positions, or accuse my generation of ruining the world. But some did. Just as you are lumping all boomers into the same basket (not being sarcastic).
