I will be curious to see what happens with Riley after the season.

This has to be an incredibly frustrating year for him.

He went from being a super successful offensive coordinator at previous stops to what has to be the most challenging year of his career this year.

There have been a lot of rumblings about how much control he actually has over the offense, whether he is calling all of the plays, etc.

It will be interesting to see what happens after this season.

Will he look elsewhere for employment?

Will he choose to stay?

Will Dabo keep him?

If I’m going to coach pro football, I might as well do that,” Swinney said, per ESPN. “I may get a terrible president or a terrible AD one day. I don’t know. I have no idea what’s down the road. But I know what we have at Clemson is special, and I wanted to make a commitment to the university. That’s what the message of the contract was.”

The Clemson coach once said in a 2015 interview that he would "go do something else" if the NCAA ever professionalized the sport.

“As far as paying players, professionalizing college athletics, that’s where you lose me,” Swinney said, per Yahoo Sports. “I’ll go do something else because there’s enough entitlement in this world as there is.”

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I took that as the players getting paid by the school. Not NIL which Dabo has

Actually he may have. The quote most people reference is:

“As far as paying players, professionalizing college athletics, that’s where you lose me,” Swinney said. “I’ll go do something else because there’s enough entitlement in this world as there is.”

Now there may have been some additional context, and different interpretations of his exact wording, but that's the quote most people remember.

He will leave sooner than later if he does not get full control.

I don’t understand. I believe Chad Morris came in in 2011 and was able to control the offense in his first years. Why wouldn’t Garrett Riley?

Why does Dabo think there’s a Clemson offense? The Clemson offense was Deshaun and Trevor. We don’t have them. So let Garrett control it.

What’s going through Dabo’s head?

That comment earlier this year by Dabo

3
4

Oct 30, 2023, 10:32 AM

about this being Clemson's offense, and not Riley's offense, and how Riley was brought in to run our offense, was just really odd.

Why was it so important to Dabo to clarify that?

A lot of my desire to know more about their relationship stems from that comment, as well as the fact that our offense this year looks a lot more like our offense from last year than it does the offense Riley ran at SMU and TCU.

Oct 30, 2023, 11:12 AM

Well because Dabo brought him here to do exactly that.

You still see the same scheme with our offense this year. I really don’t see much difference.

You know, until the Florida State game ended, this team had belief. There was belief for success. And when belief was present, the offense showed up.

I actually believe Garrett Riley would make a great HC with how proven he is and how he would utilize the portal and such.

The problem is not Riley. The problems are position coaches and a lack of buy in from everybody in the program right now.

You do not see the same motivation and belief that you saw before the FSU game, or before the season, or last year. The buy in from people in the program has been going down.

Re: Where is your proof Dabo is involved with the play calling

Oct 30, 2023, 11:04 AM

Swinney carries a playcard with him on the sidelines, so he must be telling Riley what to do on the headset.

Riley has been in charge of three Top 20 offenses in a row, so if the offense didn’t look good, it must have been Swinney calling plays instead of Riley.

Swinney decides if we go for it on 4th down, punt, or kick a FG. I guarantee you Riley would’ve gone for it at least half the amount of times we’ve kicked a FG with what we have at Kicker.

Yeah, no other head coach in college football carries a playsheet.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He's always carried a sheet or two and has been on the headset with the O staff.

Oct 30, 2023, 11:17 AM [ in reply to Re: Where is your proof Dabo is involved with the play calling ]

DHood, Plyler from Jeff Scott, Williams I believe and every other "insiders" I've seen have reported it's Riley's show.

Riley himself when asked by DHood[I believe] says it's the same offense he ran at TCU and that we "are" attacking defenses the same way.

The boards are gone, terminology is different even down to WR designations and no longer flipping for Field & Boundary.

Here's 2009, Georgia Tech in Bobby Dodd with Napier.

Here's the Chick-Peach Bowl vs. LSU with theChad.

If Riley isn't hindered, why is our offense so bad?

Re: If Riley isn't hindered, why is our offense so bad?

2

Oct 30, 2023, 11:58 AM

The answer may be that there is no talent for him to work with on offense. I don’t see a line that can block anyone, speed at the skill positions, or a QB that has any natural awareness. It’s like a lot of bad coming together.

I was foolish to believe that GR could come in and make chicken salad out of chicken chit.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No talent?

1

Oct 30, 2023, 12:03 PM

We recruit among the best in the nation. Per 247Sports:

-2020 class ranked #3
-2021 class ranked #5
-2022 class ranked #10
-2023 class ranked #11

This includes 5-star players at multiple position groups on offense.

There is zero excuse for us to be struggling this badly.

Now, if you want to argue that these players are supremely talented but have not developed well due to poor coaching, I'll absolutely buy that. But the talent is there.

Re: No talent?

1

Oct 30, 2023, 12:38 PM

As I have told you beforehand, simply looking at star ratings is not a comprehensive analysis. You have to examine the particular skill set of each player.

I also gave you an analogy, which you chose to ignore. Let's say you have a basketball team with a bunch of 4/5 star small forwards. Yeah, they nsy be 4/5 stars, but the team won't be good because you don't have a top notch ball handler like a point guard, and you don't have a big guy to get rebounds. That's our problem, specifically at wide receiver.

They don't have talent at key positions. This has been explained to you multiple times. The announcers were even talking about this during the NC State game. They were even showing overhead shots of how the receivers were not getting open downfield, so Klubnik had nowhere to go with the ball, and NC State was also able to get pressure with their front front four.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You 98.5%ers are so predictable.

2

Oct 30, 2023, 12:06 PM

Now you're claiming that our poor coaches are victims of subpar talent?!?

All of you were the same ones talking about what great recruiters we have and bragging about "we too deep" due to our top 10 recruiting classes.

But now, we aren't talented, and our coaches just don't have anything to work with.

Give me a freaking break.

1

Oct 30, 2023, 12:44 PM

Don't say "all of you," because I have never posted about having a great recruiting class, "we too deep," or anything else.

I gave you a very specific analysis, which was backed up by third party observation. We simply don't have receivers with speed to stretch the defense, or vertical ability to get jump balls. No amount of coaching will make a player run faster or jump higher. If you want to continue to ignore physical evidence, and third party analysis, have fun being an idiot.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Unbelievable.

1

Oct 30, 2023, 1:31 PM

Our players should not have a problem getting open against most anyone defending them, especially not players for Wake Forest, Duke, and NC State.

If we don't have talented players, then why not? How did our coaches as well as the recruiting analysts miss on all of these guys? Have you thought about the odds of that happening, considering that all of these people are paid to evaluate talent?

But let's say you're right, and our coaches are royally screwing up when it comes to evaluating talent and/or recruiting the players they want. If that's true, then you should be calling for a completely new coaching staff. There is no excuse for our coaches to not sign elite talent given the many recruiting advantages they have.

Re: Unbelievable.

Oct 30, 2023, 4:02 PM

They have a problem getting open if they don't have enough speed to do so.

We don't have the specific talent in key areas because the more talented players want to go to other schools instead of Clemson. That's primarily because we don't have the same advantages in recruiting as we did 5 or 10 years ago.

It's not entirely up to the coaching staff. We don't have the resources to consistently beat schools like Georgia and Alabama straight up in recruiting. We have to have some sort of advantage. If we are running an offense that's ahead of the curve, then we can steal elite recruits from Georgia and Alabama. If we are just running an offense that's basically the same as what everyone else does, we will mostly lose elite recruits to Georgia and Alabama. You may not like it, but that's reality. Sticking your head in the sand won't do any good.

Not a pumper but I’ve always thought the “Clemson Offense” comment was taken out of context. Dabo has always been about the Clemson brand and the Paw. I don’t think the comment was as political as most people are breaking it down that Riley isn’t calling plays. I just think that’s the way Dabo talks. The concept of Riley not running it is kind of silly with his background and pay.

what we've always done at Clemson, rather than bringing in too much of his own philosophy from elsewhere.

That was surprising to me, since what we've been doing at Clemson hasn't worked well lately. Bringing in someone who has been successful elsewhere made sense to me so that we can have fresh ideas and a new perspective, not simply what we've been doing.
