Skins Hot Dog Chili

Aug 10, 2021, 8:22 PM

I have tried to recreate it. Of course I can’t. Anyone have suggestions? I live in Bluffton and crave the chili dogs. Thanks in advance.

I knew something was wrong when I tried to put the noodles in the bun. Just keep it to yourself. Thanks.

Aug 10, 2021, 11:50 PM [ in reply to Re: if you are into the squirts, then I recommend this recipe ]

when i make chili i do add beans(kidney),but i set aside some of the chili for hot dogs before adding in the beans.put into snack size ziplocs and freeze,so whenever the craving strikes, they're ready.for just regular chili i serve it over white rice and top with x-sharp cheddar.prep tip:when using a ziploc, fold over the top zip part, and the bag will stay open by itself,as you fill it up.saves a lot of mess.got that from my daughter.sent her to college to learn that.my recipe is pretty simple:1 lb.plus ground beef or venison,1 med. onion chopped,3 cloves garlic minced,14 oz. diced tomatoes,14 oz. tomato sauce,6 oz. tomato paste.1 Tblspn mccormick hot chili powder,1 Tblspn cumin,15 oz. kidney beans,1 package mccormicks hot chili mix.
brown beef,onion,and drain.add remaining ingredients,except beans,add a cup of h20.heat up.then simmer low for 30 minutes,stirring frequently.set aside some for hot dogs.add beans last and simmer for another 20 minutes or so.best prepared a day ahead.freezes well.has a little kick,but not super hot.you won't be calling the fire dept.

Put ground beef in a pot filled with a 50/50 mix of water and light beer

Aug 10, 2021, 8:48 PM

Mash the beef with your hands until there are no more clumps, then turn it on med high. Once it starts boiling dump in McCormick Hot Mexican chili powder. You can’t really put too much, just eye ball it until it turns the color brown you like. Squirt in some Heinz ketchup. If you’re using 1 lb of beef, use about 1/2 cup of ketchup to start. Let it boil down until you get the chili consistency you like. If you overdo the ketchup, just add more chili powder.

Re: Put ground beef in a pot filled with a 50/50 mix of water and light beer

Aug 10, 2021, 8:52 PM

Never done the beer with the water.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It isn’t necessary. Just water is fine.

Aug 10, 2021, 8:56 PM

You could also do a water/beer mix to boil the hot dogs and steam the buns, then throw the dogs in a cast iron skillet for a couple minutes. I usually do that if the franks are below Hebrew National quality.

Re: It isn’t necessary. Just water is fine.

The water is a must to your point. A lot of people don’t know that part but it is what really breaks down the meat.

Concur on the dogs. Anything from a package not Hebrew gets scorched.

Per pound of beef. Don't forget the salt, onion powder, and garlic powder. Salt is the key!

I used to like the Ruth's Chili that's with their other products like the pimento cheese. It was once at Bi-LO but now they are gone not sure where you get it. It's a NC company so maybe Ingles, Food Lion or Harris Teeter carry it.

We used to eat Ruth’s too until I became sick of eating dog food. In all seriousness I grew up on the stuff, but I ain’t looking to continue.

Looks like this crowd favors Hebrew National, but I acquired a preference for Carolina Pride since I would eat two or three at every home game.
