Streaming versus Cable

1

Aug 27, 2023, 5:17 PM

I tried to search for some of the old messages and could not get them to resurface so I am starting a new thread. I recently cut off cable and am trying to determine whether to stream or sign back up. I travel all of the time so I had multiple DVRs on multiple TVs taping things. In addition, I would dub some of the shows to watch when I travel. I cannot always get access to the network sites, etc. since most of my travel is outside of the US. The main channels I access are ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, USA and then all of the sports channels - ESPN family, Fox Sports, ACC NW, (wherever Clemson is playing), etc. I also watch FOX News and CNN at times.

My first need is just to watch things but second I need to be able to record/store things to watch later due to my travel. Finally, it would also be great to be able to dub some shows onto DVDs. I still have access to a log in for Spectrum using our beach house login so it looks like I can watch many things streaming through that except it seems to block ABC, CBS, NBC, etc.

Do any of you have recommendations? Thanks in advance!

YTTV sounds like your best bet. Recording is called the Library. The Library can be accessed from all your various viewing devices with the login you use. The price is still among the lower range for what you get in the package. There are a couple channels that my wife likes that aren’t on YTTV. I think it’s Magnolia. That’s kept me on Directv for now, but we also subscribe to YTTV for our two kids who are in Clemson and it’s setup for a family sharing. Works well for them at their apartments.

Also, the content saved to the Library can be easily downloaded to your phone or tablet for trips and being out of country where you could lose access due to the legal restrictions.

Suggest HBOMax or Discovery+ as I think both have Magnolia.

YTTV has unlimited DVR and super easy. The recordings also segment highlights only for sports which is nice for games wo Clemson. You can also catch up to a live event using the highlights as well which I’ve used.

YTTV now has the Magnolia Network ever since June 1 apparently. I just happened to stumble upon it the other day. You can go into settings->live guide then scroll to bottom to unhide.

Youtube TV comes with "unlimited" DVR

Aug 27, 2023, 5:38 PM

but recordings expire after 9 months and you can't always skip the commercials.

I've never had a problem skipping the commercials on YTTV

Aug 27, 2023, 6:38 PM

recordings. In fact, I watch most all my news on about a 30 minute delay, so i can skip through all the commercials.

Good to hear. I'm not a subscriber but that was the impression I got from reading about it.

Started with Sling when we first cut cable

Aug 27, 2023, 6:07 PM

had both the Blue and Orange Package. After 6 months, switched to YoutubeTV and have been with them for about 4-5 years now.

Streamers complain about channel availability. Cable people

Aug 27, 2023, 6:18 PM

complain about price. Go with whichever of those you're more comfortable with complaining about.

And Dish & DirecTV folks complain about being jerked around

Aug 27, 2023, 6:41 PM

by all the constantly increasing prices, and having to call them every 6 months and threaten to cancel, to keep from getting robbed!

Another vote for YTTV. A side benefit is when we go camping, and if the campground has good wifi, we can stream in the camper same as home for no extra cost, which is significantly better than receiving only antenna channels while on the road.

Direct TV

Aug 27, 2023, 6:51 PM

I’ve done this research several times and have done a 3 month trial of YTTV vs Direct TV. Direct wins hands down. Higher quality picture and the ability to watch and stop/start a recording from multiple locations were the big differences. In addition, if you lose your internet connection you still have TV.
In addition, it’s still nice to be able to go to “Channel 13” or “Channel 4”.
Just me.

I have DTV also, But Directv doesn't carry CBS anymore and we'll miss a lot of games on there, I'm afraid.

I kept DirecTV for a year after getting YTTV...YTTV won hand

Aug 28, 2023, 7:40 PM [ in reply to Direct TV ]

for me! I have no problem getting local channels...can even sort the channels in any order I prefer! I connect to YTTV at three different locations, with no additional charge!

In four years, I've never lost a wi-fi connection, but every time there was a bad storm, I lost the DTV connection, then it would take 10 minutes to re-boot!

YTTV has had a price increase about three times in four years, but they don't jerk you around with their stupid business model of having a different price for everyone, and jack it up at any time. You have to call and threaten to cancel about every six months, to keep them from screwing you with their pricing!

We currently have hulu.

Audio and video get out of sync on several channels.
Not sure if that is an issue with youtube tv?

Will probably switch and try YouTube TV soon

I highly recommend Fubo. Great recording options, all of the sports channels as well as local.

trial, canceled it before the week was up, then they charged me for three months before I realized they never canceled it!

Re: Streaming versus Cable

Aug 28, 2023, 8:41 PM

We dropped cable for streaming a couple years ago. Best decision we ever made. Saves us tons of money and YoutubeTV is awesome plus my wife has tons of movies on Prime and Freevee for free. Streaming is the only way to go.
