Clemson NET.jpg(304.6 K)

We moved up 6 spots to #31 while adding a huge resume builder with last night's win.

We are now 7-6 in Q1/Q2 and 8-1 in Q3/Q4.

Remaining games include one more Quad 1 game and four more Quad 2 games based on current rankings:
Q1: @Wake
Q2: @ Cuse, vs Miami, @ GT, vs Pitt
Q3: vs NC St, vs FSU, @ ND, vs Cuse

We are in the tournament unless we have a monumental collapse

This team is talented and experienced. We need to make it in then advance at least to the round of 32 if not 16. Otherwise it should be considered a failure of a season IMO.

This PLUS we need to make a LOT of noise in the ACC Tourney.

Brad Brownell: Only Larry freaking Shyatt has a WORSE overall winning percentage among Clemson basketball coaches since 1975. Let that sink in. It's Larry Shyatt & then Brad Brownell.

Meanwhile gonzaga is still slightly ahead of us in net despite being 0-5 in quad 1 games and 3-6 when combining quad 1 and 2 games. Their best win is against san fransisco (net 64) at home. We have 6 wins against teams better than 64. Their best away win is against san diego show has a net of 223. This is a complete joke.

apprently the best thing to do to increase your net ranking is to beat up on a lot of quad 4 teams.

What is the average net ranking and median of their five losses?

What is the average net ranking and median of our seven losses?

probably isn't too far off. The win at UNC might move us from 35th to around ~30.

I provided the link to the Massey Index which is dozens of rankings and shows that NET is well within the boundaries of all the ranking systems.

Yea that’s why I’m not putting a lot of stock in those ratings. That makes little to no sense. Also questioning whether an ACC team with a losing record in conference has ever made it in. May happen all the time for all I know but I can’t remember it. I would definitely feel better if we were at least 4th or 5th in conference. After last night that is very doable.

Whether we put stock in them or not, they are a key factor in tournament selection. We are in good standing from that perspective.

It’s not terribly uncommon but there are some caveats. It’s less common since expansion. The teams that get in at .500 or less have a much better non-conference record AND non-conference strength of schedule than the team(s) they are tied with or immediately above them in the standings. If you disregard tie breakers, the committee does not skip more than one place down in standings. If the ACC somehow gets 4 teams, Clemson will need to no worse than a tie for 5th. I see no examples where the committee reached down any further than this since the league expanded from 9 which was as far back as I looked.

Yes, ACC teams have made it in with losing conf. records- Clemson included.

But I think those days are over.

Dang I feel we play better on the road minus VT game.

Beat Bama, could of, should of beat Memphis( that one still stings), FSU on the road was a good win, and of course UNC was on another level.

There are some NET ranking positions where a home game against the opponent might be a Quad 4 game, but a road game against the same opponent might be a Quad 3 game.

The quadrant system is used to identify which teams have more quality wins when it comes to Selection Sunday for the NCAA Tournament. Beating a Top-30 Team at home is considered equally as difficult as beating a Top-75 Team away:
Quadrant 1: Home 1-30, Neutral 1-50, Away 1-75.
Quadrant 2: Home 31-75, Neutral 51-100, Away 76-135.
Quadrant 3: Home 76-160, Neutral 101-200, Away 135-240.
Quadrant 4: Home 161-353, Neutral 201-353, Away 241-353.

That is a great summary. It’s almost like the NET rankings try to take into account the tendency of refs to get caught up in the frenzy of a home crowd by making biased calls. The Auburn-Alabama game last night was a great example of that and if course our game at Duke. We seem to get the opposite treatment at home though. Seems the refs are there to perpetuate the myth of tough gyms to play in.

Agreed, good summary. FYI, the same summary is provided at the top of the attachment I post here after our games. Helps to see it all on the same document as our schedule.

You can also see there that some teams are right near "cut lines" - about to move up or down a quad. That happened to Winthrop last night, move up to Q3.

Avoiding the Q4 loss to Louisville was huge.

The Q4 losses are usually what does us in, despite impressive wins.

Slight changes after last night:

Winthrop has moved from a Quad 4 to a Quad 3 win.

Clemson's NET climbed 2 more spots to 29.
