I just saw your post about your daughter's eye surgery and wanted to give my best wishes for a successful surgery.

I have twin daughters who had similar eye problems. At the time we were living in Raleigh area and had the surgery done at Duke Hospital Eye Clinic. Both surgeries were unsuccessful due to overcorrection. The surgeon explained that the surgery for that condition was not an exact method and suggested a second round of surgery for each child.

We had him do the second surgery on one child and this time he overcorrected the other way. I was at my wits' end and not going to allow this surgeon to try anything else to correct the eye muscle control in my children - so I called an MD friend of mine in NY. I asked him who the best pediatric surgeon was in the United States. After some research, he called me back with 2 names - one of a surgeon on the West Coast - and the other was Dr. Marshall Parks at Children's Hospital in Washington, DC.

After making an appointment with Dr. Parks, we went to DC for an exam. It turned out that Dr. Parks was an ex Army surgeon who was responsible for the development of this type of surgery across the world. He spent a lot of years perfecting the craft in underdeveloped countries, I think. He also had taught many surgeons the craft here in the USA and was known as "the Father of Pediatric Eye Surgery".

Dr. Parks was the most fastidious and precise person I've ever met - far beyond any engineer, chemist or scientist I've experienced. When he finished his exam I asked him if the results he saw was due to botched/sloppy surgeries and he replied with one word.... "Yes". My next question was "Can you fix it?". Again, his answer was one word...... "Yes".

We scheduled the surgeries for both children and both came out perfectly and they have had no issues since.

There is no greater relief than to see a child with an impairment made whole!

Dr. Parks is no longer alive, but his legacy lives on through his foundation:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marshall_M._Parks

I will be eternally grateful for his talent and how he used it to help my family and should my children not be alive at my death, my estate will go to his foundation and Children's Hospital in Washington, DC.

As further anecdotal evidence of the difference in people, I was in a restaurant in Durham, NC shortly after by childrens' successful surgeries by Dr. Parks and saw a familiar person at the bar - apparently chasing skirts and drinking heavily. I asked a companion who he was - and my suspicions were confirmed - it was the Duke Eye Clinic surgeon who had performed so badly in his surgery on my daughters. He was a well-known figure in the bar as he was also the play-by-play announcer for Duke basketball in Cameron Indoor Stadium. I couldn't help associating the cause of his failed surgery on my daughters with the scene of a drunk unfolding before me. I explained my anger to my friends who had to plead with me not to do what I explained I was about to do to the fellow. I left without speaking to him before I ended up in jail.

This was a long story for one reason. I sincerely hope your daughter's surgery is perfect. In case it's not, don't fool around with the same surgeon. Find the best surgeon in the country and get it corrected. You will never regret providing that gift for your daughter.

Why do dogs always race to the door when the doorbell rings? It's almost never for them.

Thank you for the story and I’m glad that y’all were able to get it fixed. We had it done at MUSC in Charleston and the doctors/staff were amazing. Her eye right now looks almost perfect, the surgeon said you want a slight over correction to begin with has the healing process with bring it back in to place which is where it’s sitting right now. We went back and forth about having the surgery but after reading reviews on the surgeon with this particular surgery and a couple of consultations we were comfortable enough to go through with it and so far we are happy that we did. She’s done amazing since leaving the hospital, hasn’t really fought trying to rub her eyes and has been able to keep her eyes open with very little discomfort. The real test will be in about a week which should be when her eye is finished, will update y’all after the process is finished. Thank you all for the kind words and prayers it’s meant a lot
