Offensive struggles all revolve around QB

Nov 6, 2022, 4:35 PM

How do you develop play calling for a QB like DJ? Sometimes he can hit the long ball, others he can't. Sometimes he can run and is mobile, others he can't and isn't. Sometimes he can read the defense, sometimes he can't.

How is an OC supposed to deal with that? We saw the answer - conservative and predictable play calling. Low risk passes. Bland play calls. Base the calls around the worst version of DJ, which is what we seem to have right now. How is Streeter supposed to plan an offense around that?

Why do we have a QB problem? He was a 5-star who looked incredible his freshman year. Have our QB coaches not developed him well? Or have his off-field distractions and immaturity (he's only 20 or so) gotten the best of him? Not all 5 star players or first round draft choices pan out as expected. It's not uncommon.

Cade is clearly not ready yet. And DJ has it in him, so I guess we gotta stick with him and hope he and the coaches can get it figured out.

Time for these coaches to earn those big paychecks.

Cade is not ready bc Dabo refused to give him reps against the inferior teams earlier in the year.

The reason Cade did not get reps is because too many of the games were closer than expected. If the Tigers had been blowing people out, like we did in the past, Cade would have gotten many more snaps by now.

He should have played the 2nd half of the Furman game and imo finished the LA Tech game(I know they were only up 3 scores when he went in) those were the best opportunities to get him live reps.

QB is to know when a LB is too deep, a CB is playing too far off, or a safety is lined up wrong so you can take advantage of it. All of that is a pre-snap read. Sometimes a WR will tell the QB his man is leaning on him hard to sideline and vulnerable on an inside route and you need to be able to take advantage of that. And honestly, it doesn't even look like DJ has any input at all.

Re: Offensive struggles all revolve around QB

Sure, the offense's struggles revolve around the QB. That is also true when the offense is successful, since (nearly) every snap the QB touches the ball.

(OK, the Center also touches the ball, but performs two tasks [snap it and then block].)

But the 2021 team offense's problems are similar to (but not as blatant) as last year's problems.

OL is better, but still just OK. Against the 15 or so teams in college football with a strong DL and strong LBs, our OL is exposed for its overall mediocrity.

Our WRs are better, but still just OK. Thanks goodness for Antonio Williams.

Our RBs are better in 2022 vs. 2021, but blocking on blitzes was a problem last year that hasn't been fixed; our RB corp's inadequacy of pass pro when facing a blitz is no better than last year. (Disclaimer: Phil Mafah does a really good job of picking up the blitz and actually executing the block. It's our other RB that gets there ... but couldn't block a kitten.)

TEs are much better in 2022 than they were in 2021. IMO, this year's TE unit is elite.

And DJU is light-years better in 2022 than 2021.

But put it all together, and we are in really good position to win the ACC again ... but not any big prize.

We simply are not good enough (yet).

The teams ceiling is the QB this year. DJ is better about not throwing ints but he still misses so many open reads or guys that he should be hitting before they break. Everyone who has played up in the wrs face and stacked the box has exposed DJ. He can not throw with anticipation and has not shown that ability since he's been at Clemson. To beat tight coverage you have to throw guys open, Trevor and Watson could throw the skinny posts, deep outs, and corner routes open and were also very good at throwing fades open(DJ not bad on this but is inconsistent). On top of that DJ is slow to process and that's a huge deal with rpos.

HE THREW ANOTHER PICK-SIX!!

DJ is regressing. He obviously has not received any effective coaching and based on the play-calling the coaches OBVIOUSLY have little confidence in him to run our offense. HE’S A BUST. He’s not an NFL QB. He’s not even a reliable QB at this level. His performance in the WF game should be near the norm at this point in his career, but it is not; it is an extreme outlier. You’re much more likely to get what we saw Saturday night. WHY KEEP PUTTING THAT ON THE FIELD??? He sucks. Give Klubnick his shot to start against. Luavull. Let DJ come off the bench for a change.

Offensive struggles start with the O Line. We have not had an elite O line during Dabo's tenure. Look at the holes RB's from Ga and Bama get.

That's on the S&C staff. You can have attitude but if you aren't as big and strong as the guy across from you you aren't going to win those battles often especially if they are matching intensity.

There will be no playoffs this year. And that’s a good thing as bad as that sounds. They are not doing anything on offense with DJ. What the heck happened? They were improved and something changed the second half at FSU. 2021 DJ has returned and it appears he was always here. No reason Cade can’t run the same plays we saw Saturday and get experience for future battles. I really really don’t want to lose Cade to the portal. Who could blame him at this point?
