Ok. Portal thoughts. TLDR

Plenty of teams out there taking a crappy talent team roster and upgrading with portal guys and some are having success (FSU) and others not (LSU) in the 1 GAME we’ve seen this year. The question come up of sustainability/cancer or that this is the way.

IMO, the question isn’t cancer or not as an individual, but rather to your team culture. Dabo has stated many a time that “till graduation due us part”. As such, he’s not running guys off to make room for a portal guy. Equally, he believes in his recruiting of the next round of HS guys. He also believes in the power of walk ons and what they bring to your culture. All of that adds up to maybe 1-2 roster spots in any given year available for a portal player and he has pursued a couple that chose elsewhere. The reality is the portal existed before, it was just HS guys coming is as oversigns and running off roster guys (I see you SEC).

Specifically to our current roster, the WRs appear to be the opportunity but you would only go portal for a guaranteed starter. So, would you replace Adam Randall with a portal guy? Antonio Williams? Cole Turner? Beaux Collins?

Would you have not recruited any of the WRs coming in? Not sure, but that could be where the risk is but we won’t know until next year, but generally I trust the coaches’ talent evaluations based on their track record. For every miss (Ajou Ajou) there’s a hit (Renfrow). Ultimately injuries have killed us at that position (Ladsen, Ngata, Collins, EJ, JRoss, Stellato, Taylor, etc) and the guy throwing them the ball.

Hoping for a healthy season all around and we’ll be in the hunt.

Results matter. If he is right then we will know it soon enough.

Coleman, Wilson, & Travis hunter would all start at Clemson..

Read into that however you want. Acting like we are still WRU is ignorant.

Our current starting WRs haven’t shown that theyre close to what Higgins, Ross, Renfrow were.

We used to have BACKUPS of Overton, Powell, Kendrick, & thompson. Now we have Stellato, Spector, & Hampton Earle.

I don’t disagree, but we didn’t have room this year. In order to play the portal angle with the way Clemson runs its program, one of abfew things has to happen:

Mass defection of current players beyond what you anticipate

Or

You recruit less HS kids and hold a few scholarships for portal

And/Or

You reward 0 people walk-ons

Lastly, would any of these players mentioned want to come here and/or fit the culture? Truly unknown but a factor. Maybe we talked to them and they told us to pound sand.

Call me crazy, but I would take a Coleman, a Hunter, or a Bell over most walk-ons.

I think the biggest difference is you can immediately increase your rosters experience by adding juniors and seniors from the portal.

Strictly using high school recruiting will cause you to only have so many seniors every year due to attrition and yearly scholarship cap.

Clemson has experience because they retain many players that choose not to transfer away from the culture or forgo entering the draft early. That’s mostly a positive. This year we did have guys that never developed into starters leave (eg Greg Williams) but that only got us back to 85 scholarships. Where I see a problem is not using the portal to fill unexpected loss of depth. At LB we are really thin and knew that this summer when someone could have been brought in from say a G5 school looking for the P5 opportunity. However, it would have required dropping a 3rd string former walkon player back to non-scholarship. Not ideal but that’s what the staff has to do to maintain functional depth thru injury attrition. Instead a difficult position to learn is going to be handled by an inexperienced player still working to develop physically. That’s not how you compete as a top 5 CFP contender in 2023.

Injury at LB and QB are the biggest concern followed by RB. The rest of the position groups have hungry second teams with legit experience and potential to really be the next man up.

Easy to upgrade over Turner***

Nobody is suggesting that we want Dabo to run players off. The reality is, Clemson is losing players to the portal. I think a general consensus here is that Dabo’s should be flexible enough to consider backfilling portal losses with other portal players.

Correct. Its not difficult to understand that unless.

And it’s not difficult to understand the scholarship situation with players returning who could’ve went to the draft unless you have resentment toward Dabo due to believing you know more

If your speaking for last year then you absolutely are asking to run players off because we were already over the scholarship limit so there’s zero way to bring in portal guys.

It’s simple we have terrible players, Dabo should’ve cut every single one of them and replaced them out of the portal. He choose not to so now there’s no way we can compete with FSU. Some fans will still be happy because they’re waiting to say “i tOld YoU So DaBo”

I'm sure it's been said before but there's a WY round the 85 limit and it's easy. NIL

Guys that you want on scholly that you don't have room for...have NIL ready for them in the same amount it takes to cover tuition, room/board, food, books, stipend, etc. If it takes $30k a semester have a 30 thou/semester NIL deal waiting on them. They get paid, they pay tuition. Simple. They are a walk on with NIL money that covers all the expenses that would be covered by scholarship.

This might seem a little crazy but think about it. If you had maybe 10 guys that were done this way it could really help depth when you have a position group hit hard by injury.

Maybe you hold all schollies for scholly guys and have a deal for "preferred walk ons". I certainly believe this should be done when you have a need to oversign when the gray shirt or reclassing numbers don't work out right.

All this would take is a few guys with deep pockets saying who are the 5 or so guys everY recruiting cycle we'd like to have but don't have enough scholarships for. Is there a portal guy or two we want but don't have room for. There's your answer.

He will fill to replace someone that leaves but I do not think he would ever replace what he has…

Not sure if people realize this as well but FSU had a good many to enter the portal and then went to the portal to get replacements. Now I’m unsure if they got asked to leave or felt a change of scenery is what was needed.
