Peacock NFL playoff game viewership

Was almost 10 million versus the normal 30+ million for non streaming first round playoff games. So will this teach the NFL a lesson or is the streaming services powerful enough to try to force everyone to start streaming to watch the games?

This isn't surprising and I believe the next season or two they will probably ease up on this stuff (especially in playoff games) but make no mistake, it will happen again at some point if the $$$ amount is right

I’m guessing the number is understated. I used a a friend’s peacock login.

Suspect you are right as I know several people got “creative” to watch the game yesterday. I am sure the viewership was down at least 50%.

My son in IL said Comcast was giving it free to their customers, so who knows how that affects the numbers.

Which is still a problem because it defeats the point of the streaming service.

Whatever the number, I hope it hit them in the wallet enough that they won't do it again.

Sometimes the road to the truth is so elusive it's confusing and reality becomes illusion.

NFL was paid $110 million by NBC/Peacock to stream the game so I think they feel great. NBC/Peacock will need to determine if the ads plus new subscriptions were worth it. The subscriber churn will be important.

Change is hard on people. It was a test and the test performed well as the model continues to move further and further away from over the airwaves

reach, you don’t turn your product into something that is an exclusive/luxury product. My guess is NBC wanting to grow their streaming service(for other entertainment reasons) talked the NFL into this but this should have been a hard NO from the NFLs perspective. It doesn’t align with their other goals. It’s shortsighted. Never do anything that has the ability to reduce eyeballs.

A few years ago, the NFL had 11 post season games. Now, they have 13. One will be on streaming. Fans can still watch 12 post season games through tradtional means.

The NFL is by far the most fan friendly for TV viewing of any sport in the U.S. For home markets, fans can watch ALL games on a local over the air station. 100%.

Try being a baseball fan in a home market. Bally sports keeps shrinking the number of providers. MLB.tv is great, if you don’t live anywhere close to the team you support (blackouts). And, even if I’ve paid well over $100 a month to get a cable package with Bally, I’m still not going to get my teams games on Apple TV+ and Peacock.

NFL is still wildly popular and in no danger of losing their dominant position because one playoff game per year requires a streaming service that is 5.99 a month.

Here is the takeaway from the Atletic article:

"Viewership goals were not something Peacock executives pushed externally because ultimately the $110 million they paid the NFL for the game was done for subscription acquisition. There’s no doubt the one thing parent company Comcast wanted to avoid was a viewership disaster and it got the opposite. The 23 million viewership average tops last year’s least-watched playoff game (Chargers-Jaguars, which averaged 20.61 million viewers on NBC) by a couple of million viewers.

Both the league and Peacock will be overjoyed by this viewership number. What does it mean? That we are near-certain to have an exclusive live-streamed NFL playoff game repeated next year..."

Right. So what's the OP talking about? Seems people like to make stuff up to fit their view and then talk about 'narratives'. Or maybe they just like to get useless points on an athletic board. Dunno.

Seems like a win win for both parties. And they almost broke the internet.

Given all the advertisement revenue I do not know why they have not gone to free streaming services for all games and just upped the advertisement prices. Meanwhile, they are still in the ancient model of blacking out non-sell-out games. Have you gone to an NFL game recently? The last game I went to cost me $330 for a ticket in the corner of the lower deck....play-off games are in the realm of stupidity to pay for.
