Question about tomatoes? I have several

Apr 6, 2023, 4:03 PM

plants that came up about a month ago where my plants were last year- they are growing really well- will they produce as well as those I would buy at a nursery?

Plants are plants. Volunteers tend to be a bit leggier. As they reach 8-10", you might lay them on their side and cover the stem with potting soil so they produce more roots.

Thanks - I probably need to move several to get them spaced properly and to thin the smaller ones

If your tomato last year was a hybrid, then no your new plants wont be the same. Hybrids are a cross between two breeds and the seed will convert back to one parent. Still you may wish to keep these plants as they mkay still produce a great tomato.

I have more confidence in the nursery plants. I like to buy them approximately 8-10 inches tall, lie them in a trench, around 4 inches deep, and have only a couple inches of the plant above the soil level. I keep a mulch/compost pile and continuously mulch the plants as they grow. Dig deep and use the most decayed mulch at the bottom of the pile. Sprinkle Lime early to prevent "blossom end rot".

You can plant "suckers" that are pinched off of existing plants!

Ever try Cherokee Purple? A friend from Tenn. Kept posting pictures of the ones she gets and I found some for sale at George and Pink's stand at Edisto last Aug. And it was very good!

it's all according to preference. I have tried the cherokee purple, and do not like the sweeter flavor as much as a regular Red.
