QUESTION to TNET-ters - Clemson Student Chair - late 1800's

Oct 25, 2022, 9:45 PM

Guys -

I am trying to learn more about an antique I just inherited.

The photos attached belongs to Punch Hunter from Pendelton, SC. Punch died in 1979 at the age of 101. He was a "student cadet" in Clemson University. Those days these are the kinds of chairs they used in their classrooms. Also, the students stayed in the same room and their chairs were labeled. Post-graduation, they were given the option to buy their chairs if they wanted to. And Punch did.
Above information are quotes from my father-in-law. In this case the chair is labelled as "X1,341". the number X is lost over the course of several moves.

I inherited this from my Father-in-Law (Dr. John M. Young - Dentist, Pendelton SC), who took care of Punch in his later years. FYI, John passed away in 2020 (82 years old) and was a scout master for all his active years (approx 1970- 1990).

Anyone seen or heard anything like this from your family inheritance?
Currently this is in garage and is a nonsensical junk. But after realizing its past I have more respect and have to find a way to preserve.

Thanks in advance to your serious comments and notes

You are a Clemson alum . I think that you should find a place to proudly display this piece of history. I bet there aren’t many of these sitting around anywhere.

What do you recommend?

Yes I am a Clemson alum (1989-1995) and so is my wife (1986-1992)

I had a similar style chair and had to reglue all of the joints, the fact that this appears to not be reglued is amazing. If you kids go to Clemson pass it on down to them. If not donate it to the university for their "museum collection. I would be amazed if anyone else has one.

That chair is rare, and you have something special. Judging from his age, Punch must have graduated from Clemson about 1900. You can find his graduation ceremony program by searching Clemson Commencement Ceremonies, Tiger Prints and the graduation years of that time period.

Punch must have been an exceptional student. In Clemson College's first 20 or so years, only about 10 per cent of entering freshmen graduated. It was essentially a military boot camp with heavy academic stresses, and not many could handle it.

Your comment opens my eye.
In 1989, when I was grad student, Clemson celebrated its 100 year anniversary. It did not make much sense at that time.

Backing into time, Punch must have been in his 20s around 1899 or so window ! Clemson must have been small then - as you mentioned.
All I can remember my F-I-L saying is the word "student cadet". I thought it was a strange term then. Post- your comment it makes sense.
