Got my first player for Christmas! Got a bunch of my dad’s old Led Zeppelin and Allman brothers records as well as some great thrifts like Huey Lewis & The News, Thriller, Ricky Skaggs, and some others. It’s a sweet Crosley c62 with 80 watt speakers. First venture into vinyls. Any Vinyl enthusiasts in on the board?

Just a hint. While you are digging through the racks at stores that still have vinyl albums keep an eye out for one by Eivets Rednow. That's Stevie Wonder spelled backwards, he made it to see if his music would sell without his name. Fair tracks, but a good collector.

Yes. That’s not a bad little setup for the price. If you find yourself getting a fair amount of use out of it I’d consider upgrading the stylus. This is a nice option for the turntable: https://www.lpgear.com/product/LPGATN3600DLXSE.html.

Make sure you adjust the counterweight properly too. A lot of folks tend to set it too high which is bad for the life of the stylus and the vinyl.

And the plural of vinyl is vinyl.

Enjoy.

I don’t know what I was doing honestly. I just spun it and now it plays. Idk if it’s too much weight or not. How would I know? Also some tracks on albums will randomly warp like into another key for a second and then go back. Stylus issue?

If your hearing pitch variation and the album isn’t visibly warped it’s most likely a belt drive turntable and the belt is slipping. They are generally very easy to replace.

If you want the old vinyls, 50's-60's check the thrift second hand stores. Of course you have collectors checking every day, but they miss a few because they get them in every day and they never know what they are going to get because it is all donated to them.us old coders who have a vinyl collection kick the bucket and the chillun and grans don't want them, so they get rid of them. I had a very large collection as well as the whole turn table setup and when me and the missus downsized I gave it all away. Everything.

When I was finishing my looong career as a Clemson student I was allowed by my “advisors” to take a summer school class in Classical music. By far the best class I had at Clemson. I still listen to the great classical artist today.,

I bet some of you even remember Cliff Ellis. He had some beach music vinyls I think.

Just because you can use Google doesn’t mean you know what you’re talking about. If you want to sound like a troglodyte to anyone in the trade feel free to use “vinyls”. Merriam nor Oxford acknowledge the word. “Vinyls” has only gained traction because of the Gen-Z kids new to collecting vinyl that also use the word “literally” to mean “not literally”.

I have been ignoring you quite easily. You felt the need to jump into an amphitheater post about turntables and vinyl and make an off-topic personal attack. I wasn’t attacking him - I corrected the misuse of the term “vinyls” and he doubled down with his “professor” comment. He’s wrong and misunderstands what “countable” and “uncountable” mean in this context. Unfortunately Google sent him to some dumbshit page called WordHippo that told he it can be “vinyls” when countable. That means the actual physical type of vinyl (of which there is more than one type) is countable as “I work in a factory that processes many kinds of vinyls”. The countable part of a vinyl record collection is the recording. If you have the need to stick the s at the end of a plural word then you should say vinyl records, vinyl albums, or vinyl LPs. The plural of any type of vinyl (as in the kind used to make records) is vinyl.

That works for me and I would never correct that usage though technically the “record” is the recording itself - hence the Grammys award Record of the Year to the best single of the year and Album of the Year to the best overall album (I’m not endorsing their selections). But never “vinyls”.

For all practical purposes I agree but if you can afford mid 5 figures or up for your system there is nothing that can beat the best turntable systems. I’m not in this category but have gotten to listen to some and the difference is amazing. I’ve also listened to some six figure setups that sound like trash because the owner is just showing off and it’s not remotely setup right.

I got a new turntable a couple of years ago. I have a collection of vinyl dating back to the early 70’s and some of them needed some serious cleaning. I discovered a cleaning device called Spin Clean that works incredibly well. It washes the vinyl in a solution bath. The solution gets dirty and you change it. It will make your older vinyl sound new again.

Thumbs up for Spin Clean. I have one as well. But make sure you don’t put your clean vinyl back in a dirty paper sleeve. I put each clean record into a MoFi anti-static sleeve once cleaned. Keeps it clean. For record shopping, find a few good stores that specialize in used vinyl and shop around. Prices for the same album can vary quite a bit. Fun hobby!

I have a spin clean as well. I found it a bit cumbersome to use if doing more than a few at a time. Like anything vinyl related it’s pretty expensive for what it is. $80 for a plastic tub and some rollers and brushes. It does work though, and MUCH better than the cheap spray on stuff with a felt brush. Wet cleaning is definitely the way to go. I’ve since moved to a vacuum system, and now looking into an ultrasonic system.

Before the old Percy family cabin was dismembered before being rebuilt, we recovered and saved the record collection my parents and grandparents had there. I remember as a kid being in charge of managing the 5-record stack on the drop-down turntable. They had been neglected for many years after my grandparents and father passed away even before I "saved" them from the cabin; After that, they sat in our basement for ten years or so.

Ultimately, I bought a USB turntable and started converting those records to MP3 format. I had also obtained a cleaning kit. I carefully cleaned each album and recorded it with the turntable (this is a 1:1 process, so a 40 minute album takes 40 minutes to record and of course I had to turn the album over halfway through). I then used software to remove clicks and pops, scratches, and more software that removed noise. Then I had to mark each song on each album, separate them out of the the one-long-track for each side, type in the name for each song, and enter the album title, artist, etc. And then, finally, I could convert to MP3.

It took just about forever (well, just over a year) but I managed to convert three milk crates full of LPs that were my parents favorites and then some. As I got near the end of third crate, I was dismayed to find that I still had two bankers boxes of albums in the basement!

So, this will be Percy Cabin Vinyl, Volume 1. Volume 2 may be a while in the making.

It was about 14GB of MP3s, and I bought a bunch of 16GB jump drives, filled them all and mailed them to mom, aunts, uncles, cousins...many called me to tell me they had not heard some of those songs for decades.

(A personalized version of this note was included on each thumb drive...)

Please audiophiles and vinyl enthusiasts, don't mock my MP3 conversions, understand the conditions these were originally played (like a Sears multi-stack turntable) and the albums had been in an cabin (without heat or cooling) for many many winters and summers in upstate New York.

I just got a decent portable turn table this year and added some reasonably priced powered speakers. Makes for a nice little unit that takes up little space.

Helpful Hint - while used record stores will have quite a selection and quite a price… Your local Goodwill, or other similar shops are gold mines for jazz, big band, and the occasional comedy album. And on rare occasions, you may run across an excellent rock ‘n’ roll record that someone didn’t Know what they had.

You look between the last inner grooves and the labels on each side. This is called the “dead wax”. There will be etched numbers and letters. This shows what the mastering plates are. If you see an “RL” or “RL SS” they were mastered by Bob (Robert) Ludwig. These were the original masters in the US, but were quickly remastered because they were very aggressive or “hot” and would cause the stylus on cheap record players skip. Over the past decade or so everyone started claiming they are far superior to any other pressing, so the can go for hundreds if if not $1000+ for a great copy.

The etching would look something like this:

That’s a bummer. I did the same thing with my dad’s old records. I was logging them to Discogs using the matrix to see what I had. Most records the average value were $5-15. Then I got to LZ II, and it had an average value of $150. I thought I entered the info wrong. Then I started doing some research and found out what I had. The $150 value was for mediocre condition. Mine is very good condition, both record and sleeve. Based on the last year in sales I’d guess it’s worth about $350-$500.

Re-masters generally suck. Allman Brothers at Fillmore original analog vinyls are the best live recording I’ve ever heard. The remasters are a sterile replica. Find them and enjoy.

I've had a Rega turntable for 10+ years and had not used it that much prior to a very recent purchase of a Spin Clean Record Cleaner. My vinyl collection started back in the 70's so my LP's are well worn. At first, prior to purchasing the cleaner, I was skeptical about the benefits. However, it has clearly increased the enjoyment of my collection as I can hear a noticeable improvement in the detail and clarity of my LP's. Not all users of a record cleaning system may hear the improvement (dependent on quality of up stream components.) But it is worth giving one a try for a reasonable investment. Happy listening!

Sounds awesome. It's great fun unearthing some old vinyl and taking a spin down memory lane.

As a quick and easy vinyl cleaning tip, mix 1 part isopropyl alcohol to 9 parts water in a small spray bottle for a cleaning solution and use a lint free cloth to clean the record grooves. Spray onto the cloth and not the vinyl directly to prevent getting it on the label. Makes a big difference in sound quality and does a great job of refreshing some older records that had got a lot of prior play back in the day.
