Guns are not illegal. Drugs are Illegal. U.S. deaths attributed to drug overdoses topped 100,000 last year for the first time, the CDC reported Wednesday. The CDC said there were an estimated 107,622 drug overdose deaths in 2021, a 15% increase over the previous record of 93,655 set in 2020. Drug overdose deaths rose 30% from 2019 to 2020. Deaths from fentanyl, a synthetic opioid, rose to 71,238 in 2021 from 57,834 in 2020. Deaths from methamphetamine increased to 32,856 in 2021 from 24,576 in 2020. Cocaine deaths rose to 24,538 in 2021 from 19,927 in 2020.

Our priorities are broken.

methods. But, yeah, whether chemical or just brain function changes over time (e.g. how social media rewaires your brain for reading habits and such), I can see how regular use can be unsafe -- though I suppose that is the same for almost all drugs, but especially those with a strong psychodellic component.

I am really excited about the therapeutic uses of psilocybin in microdoses for treatment of PTSD and depression. Really good to see in local areas the laws are starting to come around to the science and that they're really not a danger compared to alcohol/tobacco.

One point of clarification, which the CDC does not make

Jun 8, 2022, 9:48 AM

any more clearly than you just did and for a similar reason.... those numbers of deaths are ALL DRUG OVERDOSES, period. Prescription, over the counter, LEGAL AND illegal. They then say 70% are opioids, but they do not differentiate between legal (prescription) and illegal opioids.

What we have is a meth and especially a fentanyl problem. That is what has mainly increased the most.

The link below gives you a lot more insight. When the opioid crisis began, all you heard about was Oxycontin, and other prescription opioids. And they were a problem. But the majority of the rise in deaths has come from fentanyl and meth. But they still lump everything into "opioid deaths". And the combinations are what is most deadly. Fentanyl is used as an additive to illegal drugs, AND legal drugs. The combination deaths with fentanyl are what is really a bad problem right now, or has made it worse.

https://nida.nih.gov/research-topics/trends-statistics/overdose-death-rates

As for priorities? I dunno. Covid has killed more Americans in two years than two decades of all drug overdoses, combined. Vehicle deaths are way up there too. And guns, well that's around 500,000-600,000 deaths, total since 2000. But of all the nasty things that have killed 500,000+ Americans since 2000, guns are the least regulated. That's just a fact. Drugs are either illegal, or heavily regulated. Cars are heavily regulated. Driving is highly regulated.

But, I guess since a well regulated militia is necessary for the security of a free state (with no standing Army), I guess guns can't be regulated at all. When the Constitution was written, the United States didn't exist, and there was no standing army. As such, state and local militias were necessary (early on) for protection in the Revolutionary War. We fought and beat the British largely with personal firearms used by members of state militias (even if serving in the Continental Army, most soldiers were members of state militias. The US quickly established the first standing army AFTER the Constitution was written and the British were defeated, but even then it was not equipped. Today there are millions serving in the armed forces, who are well regulated and well armed, providing security of our free state. And even if there was a major war and a draft, you won't be taking your 12ga. shotgun into basic training or into combat, or even your AR-15. Nope. Prior to the Constitution, when we fought the British in the Revolutionary War, the war was fought by state militias, with citizens armed largely with their own personal firearms. State militias largely fought the British, even though they established a Continental Army, the Army was filled from the ranks of state militias and those soldiers brought their personal guns into the combat. George Washington served before the war in the Virginia militia.

You never see the full 2nd Amendment recited by gun rights folks. Because if they recited the entire sentence, and you crack a history book, it's game over. Even the National Guard today, the remnants of the original state militias, they are equipped with weapons far superior to private citizens. If you're deployed with the guard, you're not bringing your own personal guns.

as a matter of law, with Heller in 2008. You can talk militias and what not as a rhetorical exercise (no matter how wrong you may be), but until Heller is reversed, SCOTUS definitely held it to be an individual right.
