Steve Spurrier and the #### and Fire Offense

I remember when S Car fans were so excited when he came
See how well that turned out .....😁
At the end, when he totally abandoned their recruiting
S Car still hasn't totally recovered yet .

Odd post, this about 9 years late. We all know they are awful and have a terrible future under Beamer.

Agree. For all the good he did there, and there can be no denying he put them on the map, he ran the program into a ditch on the way out. I've wondered how things might have been different had they won that 2010 SEC Championship. As a Georgia fan, with no love for Spurrier, I still enjoy the fact that Auburn embarrassed them.

Clemson's shadow looms large.
Spurrier was like a shot of adrenaline, and then THUD. It was over.
They'll probably never recover from Dabo.

I think they can thank a Georgia QB - Connor Shaw mostly for the few years of success they had under Spurrier and the fact the Tigers were undergoing the transition from Bowden to Dabo. Tommy Bowden really owned them during his run.

It pains me to say it but Spurrier had UGA's number. I'm convinced he could have beaten the Dawgs with a kid from the tuba section taking the snaps.

That is idiotic. Shaw was their best QB ever (maybe that Mullet guy from the 90s was better). And you can hate Spurrier all you want. But you can't diminish Spurrier's ability to coach. Yeah, they had Shaw. They also had a top 25 rushing attack (did you forget Marcus Lattimore) and a top 15 defense. I hate the Gamecocks more than anyone, but to insinuate Tommy Bowden would have beaten Spurrier's teams is just stupid.

Spurrier was in it for Spurrier.
It was never more obvious than when he stated he planned on staying long enough to beat whichever coach had the most wins in program history. Once he had more wins than any other coach is when he started abandoning the program.
Maybe it was because he was old...maybe it was because he didn't want to help the next guy beat HIS new record.
Really an easy guy to dislike.

All successful coaches who come to Cola eventually fail as the Coot Culture overtakes them. Dietzel, Holtz, Spurrier were all National Championship Coaches before coming to Cola. The culture, fans, media scrutiny and local political pressure destroys everyone there. Even the good ones. It begins with an emotional outburst at the press. They all did it. Now Goonie Bird has had his taste of Cola media and they are fighting. Goonie Bird will also become sick of the whole deal in the coming years as his dream of a Destination SEC Powerhouse Program Job evaporates into reality, as he realizes what happened to the legendary coaches that preceded him, is happening to him as well. It happens to them all down there in that hell hole.

I think the problem Slurrier had was making his son Recruiting Coordinator. Like his dad, he was not a people person and preferred to stick to Xs and O's. Also, the talent in SC dried up and they got smacked by the NCAA with the funny business too.
