Offense seems to lack confidence in end of game situations and drift to one on one plays rather than executing plays that get the ball inside or clean, open shots. This is with 5 players on the court who have 400 + college game experience. Well coached teams and confident players attack press situations where double teams should produce an undefended player with an excellent scoring opportunity.

CBB teams struggle with opposition presses.

It makes me feel really good to call out someone who makes an idiotic statement like losing by one point is "Good high level college basketball". I guess losing is the new standard with some of you. The basketball fan base has been fed crap that's called sugar so long that they no longer know the difference, and statements like that prove it. Losing is not the standard. When people stop enabling pathetic coaching and development Clemson basketball will get better. Making excuses like one point losses are suddenly ok is idiotic and caving to the "I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings" crowd.

There are many upsets every week in college basketball.

Last night’s game was competitive and well-played. There were runs and shifts in momentum. That’s basketball.

I don’t know why some of you expect us to win every game, and act like we are horrible when we lose.

We played a good game overall last night. We certainly weren’t perfect, but we played well enough to win and put ourselves in position at the end. Applaud the effort, congratulate NC State, and work hard to get better.

That’s what this is about. The world isn’t ending because we lost to a solid NC State team.

I’ve posted before that not calling a time out in that situation is not a bad strategy. You basically have two good strategies to use under 10 seconds after an opponent’s basket or in transition.

You can get the ball to midcourt and call a timeout giving you a chance to run a set play with maybe 4 or 5 seconds left. That’s a good strategy. But that also gives the defense a chance to get the personnel in the game they want and set up a defense against you.

Or you can forego the timeout and make the defense play in transition with the personnel they have on the court. That’s what we did last night, and it was a good strategy as well. Chase drove the lane, put up a shot in close (although it appeared to me he tried too hard to draw contact imho), and we had two guys there for the tip in (Schefflin & PJ). They just missed the “easy” tip in. I rewatched it several times and it appeared they both tipped the ball.

Just because it failed didn’t mean the strategy was bad. The execution was bad. I don’t blame the loss on the final play. We put ourselves in a bad situation with poor decisions and play before that. I mean, we led by 12 with under 5 minutes to go. No way that should come down to a missed tip in at the buzzer, especially on our home court.

Now why we consistently put ourselves in situations like that and execute poorly, well many people have expressed opinions about that. I just want us learn to close out games and make a run. I think we have the pieces to do that.

If giving up 5 unanswered points after taking a 4 pt lead with 61 seconds left while committing 2 turnovers and using no timeouts is good clock management it explains a lot about why you think Brad is a good coach.

We're not nationally ranked. We're living off of the performance of a team that disappeared after the new year. We played well in the non-conference but since then we've struggled to hit shots, struggled to stay engaged defensively, and have gotten progressively worse as the season's gone on.

We were an extremely old team which helped us enter the season well into form as other, younger teams were still figuring things out. Now that they've started figuring things out we're struggling to compete at a high level consistently. We've played 25 games. We were 11-1 in the first 12 and are 6-7 in the last 13. That's the sign of a team that's trending strongly in the wrong direction. You can try to pretend otherwise but the results just don't agree with you.

of one-possession games throughout his tenure here. It's been a maddening shortcoming that plays out season after season with little variance. These become those couple of games each season that put us on the outside looking in when it's all said and done. In his prior stints versus coaching talent more to his level, his record in these one possession games was much closer in line to his more impressive overall record there. Since competing against ACC level coaching peers, his consistent failure rate here is what mires us in the middle.

I looked this up when clem mount (RIP) assured everyone it just seemed like it a few years ago after that brutal double digit blown lead to BC late where they topped us at the buzzer. The stats were worse than I thought. Brad is consistently within 3 spots if not the bottom - consistent meaning 10 of 13+ seasons. Last year was a major outlier at 4-2, losing the first two to start then winning 4 straight - that kind of success leads to record years like we had in league, even if it still didn't deliver an NCAA bid. That outlier is evening itself back out this season apparently.

I've posted those numbers here before. If you want to verify it may take an hour looking at season results over the years for Brad and his rival ACC coaches and keeping score.

Go Tigers.

I get that, but your previous comment specially states the wrong end of one possession losses in the ACC. With little variance from season to season. Assuming by variance, that you mean lack of improvement or getting worse.

Is this your stated fact? Or did I misread? Thanks.

Wrong end = Losing end.

Look up the numbers yourself in W/L charts of Brownell and ACC peers alongside.

Little variance = Fits category 10/13 (going on 11/14) like clockwork save for an outlier like last season, as I was clear about.

Nuff on this. Look it up.

I posted on another thread and I will probably get attacked…I truly believe our inability to close out close games is a culture problem. I think Brad does a plenty good enough job of X’s and O’s Putting players in position to win. Execution at the end and closing out tight games is all about confidence. I personally think it’s a culture glitch. Even Brad looks like he’s gripping and going “oh no not again” if you watch his mannerisms at the end of games. Bowden could not win games he should win consistently. That was not a talent issue it was a confidence/culture issue. I think this is the same deal.

Read what I said again. It’s beyond having bad luck. It’s not that players aren’t put into position to win. You put the ball in the hands of your best foul shooter up by 2 with seconds to go. He not only turns it over but commits a stupid foul! He’s been mega clutch the entire game. Always struggling in the clutch is not a talent problem. Its not even an X and O problem. It’s a culture problem, which is a coaching problem.
