The portal is not the end all be all for student athletes. Between 2018 and 2021 13,000 student athletes (all sports) enter the portal system. At the end of 2021 11,000 out of the 13,000 still remained in it. In transferring as a scholarship athlete, they stand a higher chance of losing a free ride scholarship and therefore probably not finishing college than they do truly benefitting themselves.
A rough average for football players is that they have a 25-30% chance of being chosen by nobody. If chosen there is a 45% chance that a P5 school picks up their ticket. What this translates to is that there is only a 33-34% chance that a portal player will be a real national championship contributor to any team they go to. Unless you know of a non-P5 school that got to the CFP recently....leave out Notre Dame.

I hate it for the kids losing their education. Yes, they made the choice but the NCAA made it too easy for them to make a bad decision.

It is pretty shocking when looking at the numbers. You can also read the numbers on ON3 that the vast majority of transfer players have underperformed their star rating coming out of high school. Vast majority being something like 99%.

So they're victims?! #### no...raised improperly and soft (way of the wold these days sadly) with no clue of respect, loyalty, dedication, and integrity.
What the NCAA has done is make the character of these kids more easily seen. Not that I'm a proponent of the portal, simple fact is the portal and NIL are/have killed CFB.

Paul Strelow pointed out something this morning that's interesting.
Out of the prospects in the 2022 recruiting class that had legit Clemson offers, but chose another school, 43.8% have already transferred. That's crazy that in less than 2 years that high of a percentage have already bolted.

I think being a contributor to a national championship contender is the main driving force for a very small number of potential transferees. For those where that is the main driver - those are the big ballers

Maybe I am not good at math, but if you have only 2000 out of 13000 who made it out of the portal, that means only 16% made it out. So, that means 84% have probably lost their scholly. With odds like that against you, why would you choose the portal? I bet that the majority of that 16% who made it out were tampered with and had a team waiting before they entered the portal.
Is anyone showing players these odds that are against a player transferring being chosen by another team and keeping a scholly? I know players only want the scholly because it gets them on a FB team.

The reality is the portal becomes the means to cut players from the roster. Saban used to pressure medical waivers to free up scholarships. SEC coaches use to complain about it. Now we have a portal. Clemson tries to graduate its players, but some rarely see the field. The education isn't free, you have to practice and play as well as train. Injuries are real possibilities too. NIL money isn't a big factor for most players.

These stats have been out for the last couple of years. Today's marginal players are well aware of the risks of the portal. A couple of years ago, a lot of guys really burnt themselves unknowingly.
I believe what's happening now more than ever is good players who are starters and key reserves are transferring. It would not surprise me if the percentage of transferring players who can't find scholarships starts declining some. Time will tell.

Just like tax increases for the roads, schools and the elderly were never truly meant to improve the afore mentioned, the portal is not about the student athletes. You can bet someone out there is benefitting by all of this and it ain't the kids.
