One of my most cherished items is the book. Lt Gen Moore, Sgt Major Basil Plumley and Joe Galloway wrote sentiments' and autographed the book for me.
I am friends with the family of acting 1st Sgt. Glenn Kennedy C/1/7. Charlie company went into the battle with 5 officers and 106 men. When they were evacuated to LZ Fox the were combat ineffective. Sgt. Kennedy was in command of the remaining 47 men in C/1/7.
Unfortunately, SFC Kennedy, was killed at Bong Son the following spring, the second big fight for 1st. Cav.

the First Sergeant I served with on the DMZ in Korea...a tough-minded fire breather, who served with the Army Airborne throughout WWII, Korea and three tours of Vietnam.
Top started every sentence with "sonuvab*tch," sneered at the troops usually greeting them with "What the f*** do you want, p*ssant," would get about two inches from their faces while chewing them out, yet, there wasn't a troop that wouldn't want him next to them in hostile action.
He lived well into his 90's, and we continued our phone conversations and letter writing up until shortly before his death. One of the finest men I knew, who made my job as a young CO much easier.

In real life Sgt. Major Plumley was nothing like the part played by Sam Elliot.

As far as movies go it was just a good movie. It does not really portray the reality of this fight. Had it not been for fast movers providing close air support, arty and some brave Huey pilots it would have been a different story.
