virtually all of our home football games started at 1 pm? We rarely played at any other time if my memory is correct.
I can't remember now when our last home game at 1 pm was.

Not just a Clemson, but most everywhere.
Heck, DV didn’t even have lights until sometime in the 80s. I recall we rented lighting for one game under Danny Ford.
While noon has become routine, I think specifically 1 pm starts are a thing of the past due to TV time slots.

Additionally, there were typically four home games per year with the season starting mid to late September, which was the case during my four years from 1965-1969.
I joke how that riots probably would have ensued had they scheduled a night game for one reason: the CDA-sponsored big dances in the cafeteria on Saturday nights after the games. The early games provided the time to grab a bite, get cleaned up and dressed and pick up our dates.
The dances were big affairs with top national bands, so turnout was extra-heavy. We got to see some of the greats: Four Tops, Temptations, Drifters, Gladys Knight, etc. etc.
Typical crowds were in the 30,000+ range with big games like Georgia and South Carolina having 40,000+ attending in dressy clothes, a habit of those times. (Games were considered "high" social events.)

Yeah, back then, the stadium would only seat about 42,000, and that was with the addition of the "upper levels (UA-Uz)." (not to be confused with the "upper decks.") Before the upper levels were added, the stadium capacity was about 28,000!

Also remember being able to drive right to the middle of campus & park anywhere you wanted in the early ‘70s- parked right beside Sirrine Hall for the’72 Carolina game

B dorm where I lived.
Made it easy to leave the games with my dates, get to the car quickly, then drive them over to a host's house to get ready for the dances. Was close friends with the sons of Dr. and Mrs. J.B. Whitney...he being a longtime Professor of Botany...and they were always generous hosting. Also, a Mr. and Mrs. Luke Hamilton were my "adoptive" family through the Fort Hill Presbyterian Church, and they hosted a number of times. It was amazing how many Clemson families did the same, typically also serving up big feasts. Mrs. Whitney and Mrs. Hamilton served up huge breakfasts and evening meals, always helping the girls prep for the outings. Just wonderful, wonderful people, all of whom I miss.

How could I forget? My first semester (rat season) at Clemson included an 11:00-12:00 Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday (yes we had Saturday classes in 1966) with Dr Geldard who was from Australia. Every football Saturday we would beg him to dismiss the class a few minutes early so we could eat lunch and get to our seats before kickoff at 1:00 o'clock. The entire campus was very busy, but the dining hall was absolutely packed with family and visitors eating there. He didn't care about football and never did let us go early, but I never missed a kick-off even though it was close a few times.

controversial with several Professors having a D.G.A.S. attitude about the games.
I was on "The Tiger" staff, serving as Editor my junior year, and we had a number of students visiting our offices to complain about those classes. One professor during an interview by one of our reporters called the games (as well as the Rat System) "barbaric rituals" with "no place on a university campus." Another told the same reporter he "could care less even if we were playing somebody like Notre Dame!" (Imagine that!) Since the noon games were so few, we thought it rather ditzy that those classes couldn't be suspended a little early, said so in the paper and took it up with President Edwards.

They were probably woefully insufficient for an actual night game in Memorial Stadium.

I was there from '67 to '71 undergrad, and '71-'73 grad. Kickoff was ALWAYS 1pm.
CDA had great groups for dance weekends. In addition to others mentioned, there were The Coasters, The Association, The Beach Boys, and others.
Great times. Not so much winning football, but great times.

First game was with my brother , mom and dad Sept 13 , 75 Clemson vs Tulane. Started to go to more home games in 77 .
My dad would drive me down to Clemson from Seneca and I would meet my brother at his room in Johnstone and we went to the games with his roommate. One of my best memories is going to the Ga Tech game in Atlanta on Sept 24 , 77 with my brother and his gf .I think I got my first Clemson T shirt for that game .I wore that shirt out over the next couple of years .Great day in Atlanta and the Tigers took it to the bees and ended up ranked for the first time since 1960 if I am correct.Maybe my best memory from that season is being able to go to the Notre Dame game in Nov.Great game even though we lost .The College Football world took notice of Clemson that day ! Posting the image on that T shirt .

Well I was at Clemson in the early 80’s. I think all games were at 1pm. The second upper deck and lights were also added then. National championships bring in the money. Love that Coach Danny Ford.

Yes they added the lights and some games, especially in late fall, like 1985 Clemson - Maryland game (Danny yelling at refs on field) but I believe first true night game was not until 1992 against FSU

Yep. I remember the freshman games before they were eligible. In those days freshmen could not play with varsity Changed around mid 70s. Only folks at freshman games were friends and family.

In 1963 a classmate and I got excuse notes from our Moms and left school early. Then drove to Clemson ate at Dans and watched the Duke JV game.

smoking habit just before graduating in May 1969, and for years sat right in our season ticket seats in the south stands puffing away. No one seemed to mind, as most of our surrounding seatmates did the same. One older fellow chomped on old stogies, the smell of which I can still sense today. Like me, he'd sit there blowing the smoke while cussing in mumbles. Mine was a little more pronounced!
My folks were not pretentious but came to several games, while I was a student, dressed like they were going to church...my Dad in a suit, tie and dress hat, my Mother in a dress, gloves,low heels, hat and carrying a purse, all fairly typical for those times, as the games were considered "high social" events.

Lived in Anderson; Left at 11:00 AM; Arrived at 11:45; Ate from picnic basket in the trunk of our car; Walked toward the stadium around 12:15; Watched warm-ups; We won more than we lost; Enjoyed spending the day with my Dad at the game; Back in Anderson by 4:50.

Yea was not able to go to a lot of games when I was a kid but dad and I listened to Jim P every game day.
I still listen to Don, Reggie and Tim while watching the games on tv for away games. Not many good tv broadcasters these days.

fortunate to get to meet and know him.
I can still hear his voice clearly, calling the games, when I wasn't able to attend.
He and Bob Fulton (the South Carolina broadcaster) were good friends, and Bob called a few series at Death Valley in tribute upon Jim's death. I'll admit to shedding a few tears listening that day.

controlled TV broadcasting to protect attendance, although they had no control over bowl games.
Wasn't until the mid 1980's with a Supreme Court ruling against the NCAA for anti-trust violations that the TV broadcasting started exploding. That's why so many of us older types were used to listening to the radio when we couldn't attend games. Hence, why people like Jim Phillips with Clemson and Bob Fulton with South Carolina were so popular in our state.

Yep. I remember those. They would leave that big blue carpet on the hill the whole game and we would slide on it. Had our regular little hill gang of the same kids each game and we would get one of the little plastic footballs that cheerleaders threw out and have a game on the terrace on the hill. Game day rituall always included a tour of the Calhoun Mansion and a grilled cheese sandwich at the canteen under the logia. I we stayed over night it would be in the Clemson House

Can you remember frank Howard up the middle, up the middle, pass, punt! That was an old cheer not initiated by the cheerleaders... lose to jawja,bama,auburn, hounddog then beat everyone in the acc! Stay up all night before usc guarding tgc statues those were the days!
